Distracted

Good morning, my friends. It's a hazy morning here at the Three Cats Ranch. We've seen some smoke from fires a few days over the past couple of weeks. It seems especially bad today, and the sun is shining through an orange filter. I'm writing fast today because I need to head out early (for me) for a routine appointment with my dermatologist. I'll be very close by my favorite local quilt shop. I'll admit it's very tempting to go. I might go just to see if there's anything that could help with the art quilt I'll start on today.

There was a very willing helper when I made my way to the sewing room yesterday afternoon.

My first task was to add borders to August's "Joy in the Ordinary" block.

That brings me up to date with my monthly projects. Here are the blocks I have for this quilt so far.

And then I went to work making two more blocks for the Shop Hop quilt. The first one is from Quilters Inspiration in Grand Junction, Colorado. I selected this fabric after seeing petroglyphs and pictographs on our first visit to nearby Dinosaur National Monument.

And here is where I got distracted. I started digging through my stash looking for fabrics I could use in my newest art quilt. Probably I won't use all of these purples, but I pulled out anything with potential.

Also, I'm considering blinging this one up a little, and so I went in search of appropriate floss, metallic threads and crystals. And I don't know if I'll use any of this, but I might.

When I'd completed my exercise in procrastination, I went back to work on the next Shop Hop block. This one is from Canyonland Quilts in Moab, Utah. I chose this fabric because of the many desert wildflowers we'd seen along the way. Usually, I'm only purchasing a fat quarter for these Shop Hop blocks, but I liked this one enough to purchase a whole yard.

And now I just need two more blocks to have enough to sew them into a quilt top. Here are the 18 blocks I have for this quilt so far. I have enough of that background fabric to sew them together with a narrow sashing. I'm just not sure if I should. What do you guys think? Sew them together as they are? Or should I put a one-inch sashing between them, using that same tan background fabric?

Meanwhile, Smitty moved upstairs and he was working on his own brand of procrastination. You can see the orange cast to his white fur. That's from our smoky haze.

When I finished my slow-stitching yesterday, I had the kitten this far. I should have time to finish it off this morning.

When that's finished, I'll get started on the next Girls' Getaway block.

Okay, so that's all I have time for today. I need to make breakfast, and then I think I'll have time to finish off the Kitten before I need to leave. Have a good day, Everybody! Steer clear of smoky air if you can.

The things that we have and that we think are so solid – they’re like smoke, and time is like the sky that the smoke disappears into, nothing is left but the sky, and the sky keeps on being just the same forever. ~ Booth Tarkington

I like the pattern the books make as is. Of course, you have to decide what size you want the quilt to be, and maybe that will determine whether you should sash or not. Either way, it's looking good!

I think a vertical sashing would look good.

I like the definition the sashing gives each book. Betty

I think the sashing would be a good idea - give each "book" it's own space.

I'm a sashing vote. Doesn't need to be too wide, just enough to separate the books.

I’m in the vertical sashing camp….will help distinguish them as books and not fan folded whatever’s. Don’t forget to color the bush & grass on the left side of the next Girls Getaway :)

I do love your book quilt. What a great keepsake. I like the idea of sashing because it sets off each book. Whatever you do, it will be lovely.

I vote for adding sashing too, it would help delineate between the books so that one sees it more clearly as a whole.

My vote is to sash the blocks, I like the definition it gives to the blocks. Your Joy in the Ordinary blocks are very joyful color wise.

Procrastination exercise is the best, followed closely by squirrel moments (which seem to strike me with alarming regularity). I already know I'm going to like your new art quilt because it's mostly purple, although it will be difficult for you to outdo the old building from last time.

I'm on Team Sashing. It'll make the books pop, IMHO, and give each one definition, rather than appearing as simply chevrons. Plus, believe it or not, it will make quilting them easier. Stay safe!!

Another vote for sashing, if I'm not too late. I always seem to be too late to the voting parties...
