Surviving

Thank you all for your supportive comments and for your healing thoughts and prayers. I'll admit I'm pretty miserable today. I don't have good pain control. I have a prescription opiate, but I am starting to intersperse with some naproxen. I'm hoping that will help me get through the weekend.

I was referred to the orthopedist who was on call yesterday. I have looked him up online, and he has excellent reviews. All five stars. That is good enough for me, and he is right here in our little town of Newberg. An added bonus. I will give him a call on Monday and hopefully get in quickly to see him. At this point, nothing is decided. I have a splint on my thumb, and a sling to hold my shoulder img mobile. Any movement is excruciating. I am hoping I can get better control of the pain soon.

I hope y'all will understand if I don't respond to each comment individually. One-handed typing is kind of the pits, especially when it is my non-dominant hand. I most regret in this whole episode that I will not be able to sew or do slow stitching for sometime to come.I will, of course, keep you up-to-date in the meantime. Paragraph OK signing off again. I will update as I know more.

I started to read you post and thought "What the hell?". I am so sorry you got banged up. I know Mike is taking good care of you, only to be out done by the nurse kitties! Please take care, heal quickly and feel free to indulge yourself as needed!

So sorry to hear that you’re injured. Hope the doctors visit goes well and that you’re able to keep the pain at bay. I’m sure the fact that you can’t enjoy your sewing is especially hard. Hang in there. 😊

Oh Barbara, I am so sorry to hear about your injuries. The caterpillar, on the other hand, is grateful to you. I had shoulder surgery two years ago. Shoulder pain is astoundingly, well, painful. My empathy and sympathy go out to you!

So sorry about your mishap. Hope you have decent pain control and are able to get proper rest. When you’re a bit better remember to practice your physio exercises religiously.. My test for improvement was how well I could put dishes up into the cupboard...very scientific., don’t you think? Pray for strength, patience and endurance.

OMG!!! Those damn slight curbs are a pain. I've fallen twice that way but luckily not broken anything but my pride.

I hope the catepillar appreciates your sacrifice.

Sending you best wishes for a speedy recovery and a good orthopedist!!

I'm glad you're okay! My mom had a similar accident about 4 years ago. I went up to the Seattle area to help her for about 10 days while my brother went on vacation. She had the same issue - a lot of pain that was hard to control. She broker her arm, shoulder, a couple of ribs, and punctured a lung. I hope you can get some relief. And don't worry about responding to me - that pain is too much, I'm sure. Take it easy.

Oh my word! So sorry to hear about your accident. I'm sure your ortho will be able to give you something to alleviate the pain you're suffering through. Hope Mike knows how to cook ... he's surely going to be missing your delicious meals, but that's the least of his worries, I'm sure. Praying for a super speedy recovery. Take care of yourself Barbara.

Newberg hospital has some excellent orthopedic doctors as does McMinnville. I hope you can get an appointment Monday and find some good pain management in the interim. Thinking of you!

I am SO sorry you've managed to mangle your shoulder and thumb. I fell over a suitcase (long story) 5 years ago and shattered my shoulder joint, so I know from experience that it is NOT pleasant. Take all the pain meds they give you, keep it iced to dull the pain and drink as much fluid as you can stand to. Fingers crossed that you get in for surgery quickly and your healing goes well.

Sorry to hear what happened. Hope you aren't in lots of pain and heal quickly.

Having had shoulder surgery twice the best pain relief was an ice pack! Good luck!

Oh my. Had no idea this happened to you yesterday. I'm a little late doing my daily blog reading.
Wow! So very sorry to hear you were injured so badly! And also sad for you that you won't be able to do the things you enjoy for a while. Sending best wishes that you heal quickly and the pain becomes manageable for you soon. Lots of snuggle time with kitties will certainly help.

I was busy all day yesterday and didn't read any blogs, so I didn't see your post until today. OMG, so sorry you had this happen!! Do not reply to this, just know you are in all our thoughts with best wishes for you to get treatment and recover.

Well, this just stinks. I sure hope you get the pain manageable soon. Can you drink wine lefthanded :-D Do take care. I'll keep you in prayer for fast healing, Barbara.

Take it from one who has done this.....get the rx for pain filled. I did heavy pain killer for 2 days then got the loritab. I only took it for about 5 days to get thru the worst. You can't even get comfortable otherwise. And you must rest. Hang in there.

Training yourself not to move to ease pain is harder than it sounds. Pain meds help. So does the ice packs. Time seems to stand still as you wait to heal. Good thing today’s electronics are so lightweight and positionable. Keeping mentally distracted will help until you are able to move again. Audio books, movies on a positionable screen, music that soothes and kitties that are aware of your pain area as bed companions all have their moments. Peace and quiet and a visually appealing scene allows your brain to rest. Lets hope your surgery date is soon so you can look forward to the recovery. You will get through this.

Your cats are the best medicine for the moment-I'm sure they are comforting you. Do hope you can get in to see the specialist quickly and get the treatment underway. Discouraging to have this happen, but you will get good care and hopefully a smooth recovery. Wellness wishes!

Oh no! What terrible news. But I saw that you were wearing a helmet so that proved to be a good idea. I hope you get your pain under control and find something you can do to occupy your time.
I had opiates for my recent surgery and I didn't find they helped that much and they do have side effects. I ended up alternating a lot of Tylenol with a lot of Advil (maximum daily doses all round) and I got good results.
Take care Barbara. I look forward to hearing of our recovery.

So very sorry this happened when you were only trying to expand your horizons. You might look into getting some CBD oil to help with pain control once you are off the hard stuff. Virtual hugs from So. Calif.

Ohhhhh... That hurts just to read about! When I have had pain issues I have found a hot soaking bath is a big help. Of course with a broken arm that becomes a bit problematic. Wrap it in a baggie maybe?

How are the kittys dealing with you in pain?

Magpie's Mumblings said...

I'm so sorry you're having so much pain - how I wish I could wave a magic wand and make you all better. Hopefully the kitties are keeping you good company and at the very least helping to keep your lap warm. Sending ever-so-gentle healing hugs your way.

My ortho guy told me that shoulder pain is the worst he sees in his practice because the shoulder needs to move in so many directions and is therefore just a more complicated and nerve filled body part. And I know that my pre and post surgical pain was certainly less than yours because I didn't have broken bones to complicate things. That said, my most effective pain relief came from a thc/cbd sub lingual tablet that my husband found almost by accident. I had never used either substance and, although the package says it would let me stay alert, half a tablet put me soundly to sleep within about five minutes. Pure Calm by Pure Tree. It worked better for me than the narcotics.

So sorry to hear about your accident. I’m sure you feel awful. Hopefully the meds will work and eventually this too shall pass. The kitties will cuddle and console you. And I’m sure your husband will be extra helpful and nurse you back to health. Take care and get better soon.

So sorry about your accident. I remember looking at that bike, seeing electric and thinking - not me I would probably break my neck. At least it wasn't your neck. It made me wince in pain to hear you had broken yourself. I hope you heal fast. I will miss your daily postings.

So sorry to hear about your accident. I am just now catching up on the blogs I follow due to helping take care of my 93 yo dad who broke his shoulder on October 5. He was out walking his dog and slipped on the first frost of the year. He did not have to have surgery, but was immobilized. The pain was hard for him to deal with, but he is finally almost healed and starting pt. Hang in there! If he can do it at his age, I think you'll be fine. As an aside, I broke my shoulder in 2017. Got my foot hooked in my sewing machine cord and down I went. Prayers for fast healing!

Ouch! Poor you. I'm sending pain-free and wishes for an easy and quick recovery (so your needles won't have a chance to rust!, lol).

Fingers crossed you are now feeling much better. That's the problem with the shoulder area, there is no way to put a cast on it. I had a sling when I broke my collar bone, but boy move wrong and it certainly didn't feel nice.
