Old Dogs

Just left the ER. Crashed my bike already. I was trying to avoid running over a woolly caterpillar. The front wheel got onto just a slight incline at the edge of the sidewalk and down I went. The wheel just slipped right out from under me. Broke my shoulder in two places, and broke my thumb. Right arm, of course. Bummer. Old dogs shouldn't try to learn new tricks. Needless to say, I'm signing off for a bit.

So very sorry to hear about your accident. Hope you will be able to find a wonderful ortho, rest, and heal. Shoulder injuries take time but do heal well if the patient remains patient and can follow doc’s instruction. Best wishes to you and good luck to Mike.

Oh, my goodness! Take care and get well soon!

Ouch! Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Oh dear you have my sympathy and total understanding. At least it was a bike that took you out instead of a cherry like I stepped on in May. I had to have a reverse total shoulder replacement. I highly recommend the Rebound Clinic. My shoulder doc only works in Vancouver but he is amazing. My surgery was in June and I am doing much better now. I would say I am 80 to 85% back to normal. I truly hope it was not your dominate hand/arm. Mine was but I was able to learn how to feed myself and brush my teeth with my non-dominate fairly quickly but was really glad when I got out of the sling and could begin to use my right hand again.
You will be amazed at what you can learn to do with one hand. I have been told it is really good for the brain.

I hope that you are able to quickly recover.

Holy cow, Barbara. I could hardly believe what I was reading. I keep wanting to get cross country skis because I did quite a lot of it in my northern years, which were also my much younger years, but this is making me think twice. Yes to all the other comments with the encouragement and well wishes for fast healing. Ditto from me. I hope you are not in too much discomfort.

Tilly said...

That must hurt a lot, wish you recover soon, take care.

Oh no! I am so sorry, Barbara. What a total bummer. Hope you are not in too much pain and that you let yourself rest and recover. Take care and know that all of us are thinking about you.

So sorry to hear about your accident. Sending prayers your way for a speedy and full recovery and for patience in the healing process. I will definitely miss your blogs.........I read every day. I have a blog (www.christiscreativecorner.blogspot.com) if you feel up to reading. I don't post as often or as well as you do, but in the healing boredom, you might have time to do some reading. I hope the resident engineer can put on his nursing cap and take really good care of you.

Katie said...

Oh no! This is terrible news. I mean, it could be worse, and I'm sure the kitties will be happy to oblige you healing while hanging out on the couch under a quilt, but still... I hope you heal quickly and thr pain is minimal. Do post every so often so we know you're still alive and kicking, though! (But did the caterpillar survive?)

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear this. This must be so frustrating for you since you are so active. Try to make the best of your situation, maybe you can read or listen to books, catch up on TV shows, and enjoy your time with your husband and kitties. It’s honestly hard to put a good spin on this kind of injury, especially for a quilter, but I tried. Take good care of yourself and know that we are here waiting for your comeback. Maybe you can enjoy the pain meds?

Oh, Good Lord!!! Oh, take time to heal (we do it slowly these days) and sending you many healing prayers and gentle hugs.

So sorry to hear this, and you were doing so good getting back into bike riding! Best wishes for a speedy, mostly painless recovery. The kitties and the resident engineer will be spoiling you for sure. Doris

Barbara, what a shock! I hope you do not need a shoulder replacement surgery and you can be mended with your own bones. It sounds as if you will see two specialists, one for the thumb and one for the shoulder. I’m sure there are other bumps and bruises that your body will mend on its own over time. The road ahead may seem overwhelming but you are of strong will and will step up to the task. As others said, do what the doctors order to get the best results. Hubby went through shoulder replacement and came out with good results as he was a diligent and obeying patient. Mike will be your rock and support you. He has my thoughts, too, as he helps you in the healing process. Voice to text will be helpful. Adding robot helpers around the house for cleaning might be timely. I’m sure your boys will be there to help as they can. In the recovery mode hubby made great use of a wedge pillow on the bed to elevate his torso to help stabilize and keep him comfortable. A hand held shower head also became a necessary item. Thoughts and prayers for all the Stanbro’s as you go through this process.

Oh No! I'm so sorry to hear about your accident - the premonition you mentioned the other day about the parking spaces was on the mark, unfortunately. Household chores and grocery stores are definitely out of the question now (silver lining?). When you're up to it, please keep us updated on the trials of learning to embroider with your left hand, but in the meantime, take care!

On a bike/ No, girl, not a good thing. Broken shoulder is painful, very painful. So I really feel for you. Sleep in a recliner, do not lie down. Trust me, I know. It is a slow healing process. Hoping you do not need the surgery to fix but that depends on the break.
So I will be sending prayers and healing ones at that for you. Lots of movies for a while :)

And here I saw your picture on your bike and thought I should try mine again. Guess I’ll wait awhile! Sorry to hear about your crash and hope you have a speedy recovery and can hopefully still do some sewing. I would be lost without my stitching/sewing time.

Oh my gosh, I am so sorry. I feel suddenly spoiled to have ever complained about my cracked elbow from my decades-old bike adventure. I really feel for you, shoulder pain is simply no fun at all. Wishing you excellent pain control, loads of patience, and quick healing.

I was laying in bed this morning, during the wee hours, thinking of you. I'm so incredibly sorry this happened, and I hope you recover quickly. Take care, Barbara.

So sorry for your wreck. I was once in a thumb spica cast for 3 months, dominant hand. I learned you could do a lot with the index and middle finger. Computer was a lifesaver, My hunt and peck got pretty fast. I did NOT do my shoulder. That's a bummer injury. Pick your surgeon well (ask an OR nurse - they know who is best).

Kathy L said...

So sorry about your tumble. This puts a big dent in your plans, but hang in there. Itll just take time.

DaniQuilts said...

Oh, Barbara! I am so sorry. I took a scary tumble off a bike about two years ago and have not gotten back on since. I didn't break anything -but had a huge goose egg on my hip. (must be all that extra padding).
Sending you lots of healing hugs and wishes for a quick recovery.

Lord, hear our prayers. Take it easy and do as told. You will heal faster. Hope to hear from you via newsletter soon.

Quite a while ago, I decided I'd stop rollerskating, bike riding, etc because of that very reason, while still active, most physical activities I have left behind me. Now, just turning 75, I WISH I could do those things but refrain for fear I will end up in the ER as well.

Oh no!!!!!!!!! Ouch and owie and everything in between. Sending you massive amounts of healing thoughts my friend - and I know the kitties and your DH will do their best to keep you well supplied with love and care. One day you will look back on this and laugh to think that you were done in by a woolly caterpillar. That won't happen for awhile but you'll get there. Take care of you. If you can, let us know how you're doing.

But is the bike okay? How about the caterpillar? (Joking.) Really, I'm terribly sorry to hear that. The bike sounded like so much fun. I had been thinking about one myself, but now I'm officially giving up that idea.

Wow, so sorry to hear about your fall! Hope you have a swift recovery!

Barbara, I’m so sorry to hear you valiantly sacrificed yourself for a wooly caterpillar, but if I were voting on it, it would’ve been the other way around. No disrespect to wooly caterpillars. I know you and Mike will take good care of each other. Here’s hoping that you heal quickly. Most importantly, I hope everything mends well and without any lingering problems (always a consideration at our age). Please don’t worry about responding to this email - we all want you to focus on getting better soon. xo

Oh man that stinks! Hope you get the best care and plenty of pain relievers. The kitties will have to take over the slow stitching.

I was catching up on blog posts and how horrible to read of your accident! You are in for some healing time....so glad your kitties will be able to keep you company. We just delivered our bikes to our teen-aged grandsons after discovering it's not "like riding a bicycle" several months ago. I'll be sending positive healing thoughts your way and hoping you don't run into any complications.

So sorry to hear about your accident. All the best laid plans up in smoke. So what will you do on your winter trip? Guess you will be able to catch up on some reading as that is going to be about all you can do. What a horrible end to this horrible year. So hope that the shoulder heals really fast and you don't have to have surgery on it. Prayers are headed your way.

Definitely not fun at all! I hope you are not in too much pain and you've things figured out well enough to not feel to helpless. I broke (into tiny little pieces) my collar bone many years ago when my bike wheel got stuck in some railroad tracks. Thankfully it was my left. It's amazing what you can't do when you only have one mobile arm. Hope that Mike is taking really good care of you.
