A Little Update

It has been quite a day brightener to read all your messages of hope and healing. Thank you. I am learning to use voice to text on my iPad keyboard. Unfortunately, it does not recognize instructions like “period” and “paragraph” which means you’re probably going to see more typos than usual in these updates.

Yesterday was spent mostly sitting and napping. Since I didn’t sleep well the night before, and I was dosed up on narcotics, I found myself just nodding off midsentence. Today, I am trying to go sans narcotics since they make me feel kind of sick. Time will tell if that is possible. For the time being I will try getting by with naproxen.

I signed up for the portal that allows me access to the record of my ER visit. This is what it says, if you’re interested in that sort of thing:  “Shoulder x-ray demonstrates displaced right proximal humerus fracture and likely fracture of the inferior glenoid.  No dislocation.  AC joint maintained.  Right finger x-ray shows displaced suspected intra-articular fracture at the base of the right first finger distal phalanx.” I found this image online (not mine) that helps explain some of the terms.

I won’t know anything about the treatment or prognosis until I get in to see the orthopedic specialist. I will call him tomorrow and hopefully be able to get in soon.

Fortunately, we have food for quite a few days. Mike is an excellent handyman, and he can fix anything that breaks. He is not a cook, though, and so I am sitting and shouting instructions to him about what to do in the kitchen. When I still thought I was going to be doing the cooking, I picked up the ingredients for this Slow Cooker Creamy Tortellini, Spinach, and Chicken Soup. Under the circumstances, I am “borrowing” the image from the website I’ve linked to there. I hope she forgives me with my broken shoulder.

I first read about this soup in a different article that described it simply as “The Soup,” as if it were the soup to end all other soups. Anything I can make in the slow cooker always gets a serious look from me, and the soup did not disappoint. And Mike made it, so how hard can it be? We liked it. Oh, and FYI, we  used the fresh Butoni tortellini, which I believe is widely available in grocery stores.

When all you’re doing is sitting around hour after hour there isn’t much news to report. I do have excellent medicinal cats to help me. They go in shifts.

That was my view for much of the day. Sometimes the cat is smaller. And blacker. For the time being, the grey cat is on shift. He is telling me it is time for my nap, and I don’t think I will get better advice than that.

Barbara, I'm SO very sorry. I just got caught up ... what an ordeal! So did you avoid the woolly caterpillar?! Gracious. Shoulder injuries are no stinking fun. Praying the orthopedist can get you in soon, you're able to get your pain manageable, you're able to get some decent rest/sleep, your recovery is quick and healing complete. :)

Hopefully you’ll get into the specialist ASAP. And glad your home nursing staff is on duty.

So sorry you are having to deal with this. Hopefully you can get in to see the specialist right away. Looks like Mike is good at following directions and you are in good hands and paws. Prayers and hugs to you!

It sounds like you are adapting already and by the time you're back to "normal" may have found some new ways of doing things that you actually like better! (Like maybe letting the hubby cook!!!) I hope you get good news from the orthopedic doc, after securing a speedy appointment. It does seem as though the kitties are doing their best to pull their weight and I've made that soup for a potluck at work. They were my Guinea pigs, but none was left, so it was a hit for all. (My hubby won't touch it, as it contains the dreaded spinach, but he doesn't know what's good for him anyways!) Keep the positive attitude and in no time at all, this episode will be one for the history books.

Phrases like "No dislocation" and " AC joint maintained." sound hopeful, but I don't like the "displaced" comment on the thumb. Fingers (not any broken ones) crossed for good news tomorrow.

At times like this, I wish I had Magic Fairy Dust and could sprinkle it to make this all go away and you be back 100%. In the meantime, I am sending positive thoughts and prayers your way for a speedy recovery. I also want to remind you of the Mexican Restaurant in your area, which I seem to recall you tried to visit during early Covid for takeout. My point is, take-out is perfectly ok. I wish I lived closer as I'd be happy to come by and drop off meals to you. You need to focus on relaxing and recovering.

Big hug.

I wish you a good recovery, and that you can get the pain under control. I hung my blue Winter Wonderland quilt that you sent me, I just marvel over its beauty! I can't thank you enough again.

Just sending warm, healing thoughts. I’m so glad Mike is adding kitchen handyman to his repertoire and that you have medicinal cats on duty. Nothing like purr therapy to help you relax...

Medicine Pets are the best. Dislocation sounds better than break = still painful. I think Mike will do a good job as new kitchen engineer - and take out is always a good replacement.

Glad you have kitty comfort, and also glad you have Mike, even if he isn't a cook. I expect he'll do just fine. Sheet pan dinners might be an easy make for him, and they are quick! Do take care, rest and heal. Hope you get in to the orthopedic specialist soon!

I have to admit I held my breath for a moment when you said "Mike is an excellent handyman and can fix anything that breaks"--I thought the next line was going to be that he tried something to fix YOUR breaks! Oh no!

Glad you're managing okay. Just think, if this had happened before your husband retired, it would be much more difficult to manage throughout the day.
So things can always be worse. Keep us posted on what the doctor says.

Sending warm wishes your way.

Just checking in to say hi. Glad Mike is jumping right in on the cooking detail, although I imagine baked goods will not be part of his repertoire. But you'll be happy you did so much canning this summer.

Hoping you had a closed reduction of the displacements! Do not reply to me, I know you are reading all your comments!! Save your strength, and get well soon!! Keep curled up with your medicinal cats, and a warm quilt. Gentle virtual hugs to you.

The soup looks warm and comforting, as do the cats and the quilt. Rest up and heal well.

I don't do well with narcotics either. I can't have naproxen either. I do hope and pray you get in to see the orthopedist right away and get started on treatment right away too.

Glad you have the medicinal cats to help out and a hubby willing to try following directions in the kitchen. When you are better, maybe you can make him a chef's hat and apron.

I am glad to see you haven't lost your sense of humor :-) Also, don't feel like you have to respond.

That soup looks delicious. Hope you are healing right up!

I’m glad you shared your shoulder and thumb information. I’m actually a little relieved as my thoughts went in a worse direction. You are hurt and need medical care and time to heal but it will be much quicker than I thought. Being an optimistic pessimist my thoughts go to the worse case scenario and when I hear it is better than I imagined, I give a huge sigh of relief. Having your comfort cats, learning new technology skills and being the kitchen supervisor will keep you quite occupied and hopefully divert you from the pain. And Mike is learning new skills! The next thing you know he will be canning or baking desserts. As a previous commenter stated, if a thing like this must happen it is fortunate Mike is able to be at home to help you as you mend.

Keep your spirits up. As they say, this too, shall pass. Once you see the doctor and have a plan, it will be a clearer path to recovery.

Mike just might discover a hidden talent and become a cook. Good for him for stepping up and I'm sure he'll do well and you won't starve. Interesting to see the photo to figure out where you were hurt because the description was sure clear as mud! Fingers crossed you will get to see the specialist sooner rather than later and can get some sort of further treatment plan in place for you. Sending huge healing thoughts your way.

So relieved to see your wonderful sense of humor is still with you. I'm sure the resident lap warmers are happy to do you this service. My fingers are twirling to bring you a good plan tomorrow. Take care.

Barb, I'll be keeping you and Mike in my thoughts and prayers as you recover hopefully quickly. I'm sure Mike will be a suitable kitchen engineer for the recovery period. I know that you will miss sewing and handstitching. I hope you have a good Netflix or other media streaming service to watch. Audio books are also a great way to pass some time. Although I have to admit to falling asleep on some narrators :).

I will be watching out for those nasty curb edges and wooly catepillars as I bike!

Take care!

Oh, Barbara, I'm so sorry to be reading this latest post. I wasn't on my pc for most of the weekend and missed your post about your accident. This is really bad news and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I hope you get to see the Dr. very quickly and get the shoulder taken care of. So so sorry!!!
