An Brief Outing

We drove into town yesterday to run a few errands. My new custom orthotics where ready to be picked up. Things in my life are starting to be categorized as “AS” and “BS,” meaning “after shoulder,” and “before shoulder.” As you might guess, last everything right now is “BS,” which seems a completely appropriate designation.

A morning shower has taken on a whole new level of importance. It is important because it is just about the only thing that feels good these days, and mostly I can do it myself. Yesterday, I asked Mike to help me style my hair a little bit, so I could take this selfie showing off my new Christmas earrings. As selfies go, it isn’t bad, but it doesn’t show off the earrings very well. You will just have to take my word for it… They are very cute.

Also on our outing, we dropped off some cardboard for recycling, and picked up another prescription for pain medication. Thankfully, I am using less pain medication, reserving it mostly for night. I have been sleeping surprisingly well. Pain in my shoulder has decreased, and I have at least some mobility. I will see the orthopedic specialist tomorrow, and I will admit to being intensely curious what the CT scan showed.

We were back to a team effort in cooking last night. I don’t know how Mike feels about it, but I am kind of enjoying sitting with him and telling him what to do while he does all the work. Here, he is chopping broccoli like a boss!

What was he making, you ask? It’s this Pancetta, Gruyere, and Broccoli Quiche. Doesn’t this look delicious?

Well, it was. We were able to squeeze one more serving out of our wild rice stuffing from Thanksgiving. That made an excellent side dish for the quiche.

The original recpe was published in our local newspaper some years back. Its internet translation substitutes bacon for the pancetta. I had leftover pancetta to use, and so we stuck with the original. Also, our grocery store sells gryuere cheese in 5 oz. packages. I needed at least two packages, but they were on sale as “buy two, get one free.” And, well, I didn’t really want that much, but free is a good price. So now we’ll have to make something else with gruyere. We like it, so it’s all good.

Kitties are continuing their healing ways. Sadie has medicinal cat duty right at the moment.

It’s ‘zhausting work. Let me tell you.

So I’ll update you again tomorrow after I see the orthopedic specialist. Fingers crossed for no surgery.

Thinking of you. I tripped over a dog of ours back in 2011, and shattered the kneecap. Cast, wheelchair and two surgeries got me back together just fine, just like you'll be too!

Glad to hear you are feeling better. I am recovering from covid and hate how helpless it makes me feel. But I know we will both recover, just takes time.

So good to hear and see that you are feeling better/less pain and all. Good luck tomorrow at your appointment...We are in quarantine here until we hear the results of Tom's covid testing...[not that we go many places to begin with, but when you know you can't it's somehow different!!]Hoping for the best for you...
Hang in there...hugs, from afar Julierose

Very impressed that you can take a shower comfortably! Just getting undressed and re-dressed was more of a challenge than I could handle for a too-long time. Fingers crossed for good news tomorrow. And yup, that quiche looks very good -- adding gruyere to my shopping list as we speak.

Fingers crossed, and lots of positive thoughts coming your way, for your appointment tomorrow!
That quiche looked amazing!! Be sure to tell Mike he did a good job....and the kitties too...it reminds me of a time many years ago when we had a petite gray kitty, named Katie, who would always pat my face when I was sick...she always seemed to know exactly when I needed that little pat my face, and never once scratched me with her razor sharp claws (thankfully!)... our current kitty, Cosmo, seems to sense everything just before we do...we have said many times we should have named him Radar!
I am so glad you seem to be feeling better and that you are getting some rest...
Take care!

Yep, sometimes you just have to call out the BS. :) I'm so glad the pain has gone down for you - sure hope the specialist doesn't kick it up too much again tomorrow. YES that quiche looks DELICIOUS. He did a terrific job. THanks for including the recipe link. I'd like to try it out.

Once of my jobs when I worked in the clinical area was nurse manager of a trauma orthopaedic unit so I very interested in what the CT scan showed and how they treat the problem. Just call it professional interest. Your kitties are purrfect in their caring roles. Mmmm the quiche looks yummy.

So sorry to read about your accident. I've just read your latest blog, then had to scroll back to see what you actually did. So pleased your kitties weren't to blame, and it seems you are in quite a bad way, waiting to see the specialist.
I had a fall in the caravan last week, when I tripped over my feet in the dead of night, and my face and jaw landed on the metal bar under the mattress. Nothing broken thank goodness, but my large purple bruise got bigger by the day.
Wishing you a speedy recovery, not a nice thing for you to be going through, especially so close to Christmad. Your cats seem to be taking their nursing duties very seriously.

Altho I only know you thru your website, which I enjoy so much, I would like to leave a comment of "hang in there". You're doing a great job, and so lucky to have your husband and other family near your side. The kitties probably know something is amiss and are doing their part to comfort you. Best of luck! I'm sure you'll be recovered soon. --Annette in Omaha

Everything crossed here that I can possibly cross (well, not my eyes, though). Seriously, I do hope you get a good report with no surgery needed. Glad you are able to sleep and to reduce the pain meds, plus have some mobility. Hoping those are all good signs. I do love those earrings - they are purrfect for you!

You are getting around! That is progress. Being able to shower is refreshing and makes one feel more human. It may take a while and cause exhaustion but is more than worth the time. Glad to see you can supervise the prep for dinner. Mike will have a new skill and you will enjoy another togetherness task in your life. Love the earrings. As others have stated, I await the information from your doctor visit. Fingers crossed.

Glad that things are slowly improving. Hope the doctors visit goes well today and you get some help and guidance that improves the day to day stuff while you are healing.

You sound so much better! We had a giggle seeing Mike cook...as Russ had the exact same experience. He said the quiche looked familiar and it was. Sending prayers for the doctor visit tomorrow with no surgery.

Being as productive and busy as you are--the idleness of healing must be difficult. I think your list of tv watching is a start. I also love true crime.Dateline often has some interesting ones. I also like Forensic Files. And even 48 hours is fascinating.
Mike will appreciate all your work involved in cooking.
Is there no sewing related activity for you?
Hmmm.
You could rearrange, neaten your fabric, thread, floss--maybe.
Get an Aquilt cutter and cut a bunch of fabric with your left hand.
I like this. If you cut all your scraps into sizes you'll be surprised at it reduces your scrap pile. The electric version $$$$would be even more fun and easier. Does that help.

Mike is doing great at cooking if he produced that! Looks wonderful!! Who knows, he might discover a hidden talent. Good to know the kitties are still taking their responsibilities seriously and even better that your pain has decreased.

You look good with bangs! Perhaps a little more? Cute earrings. Glad hubby WILL help in the kitchen... my Dad would not even open a can of soup for lunch for himself, he had to be served! (women's place is in the kitchen... and all that!) I made sure to marry a man who knew how to use a kitchen! Daddy was appalled that I didn't get up early to make my hubby's breakfast. I replied How hard can it be to open a box, pour some cereal into a bowl and add milk? Since as a small child he had the duty of making the large family's oatmeal in the morning, that is what he still does just for the 2 of us.
