Snowflakes in August

There isn't much to say about yesterday. It was a driving around and grocery shopping day. It was 2:00 p.m. by the time I got home. I had some lunch, and then took a cue from Sadie. The two of us had a nice afternoon nap together.

So, I didn't make my way into the sewing room until nearly 3:30. Despite limited time, the background for my challenge piece is put together. Recall the prompt for this challenge is "The Sea." I'll be doing some top-stitching on it today, and then adding the main element. You only get peeks of this for the time being. The reveal will be November 1st.

Dinner was simple last night. I've only made this once before, and I'd forgotten how good it is. This is a Korean-style Grain Bowl with Spicy Marinated Steak.

The rib-eye steak is marinated in a fruity spicy marinade, and then grilled. After resting, it's sliced across the grain. Delicious. The recipe calls for pear juice in the marinade. I couldn't find pear juice, and so I used apple juice. It's served over a bowl of a brown rice blend mixed with baby spinach. The rest is cold vegetables: blanched sugar snap peas, carrots and red cabbage. The cabbage and carrots are marinated using the same marinade used for the meat. If you like, you can add some kimchi. Mike isn't fond of kimchi, but I love it. Then the whole thing is topped with a fried egg. Yummy and filling.

The only other thing I have to show for my time from yesterday is my start on the 12th of 12 snowflakes. This one is done all in metallic gold and blue. Pictured here is the progress from yesterday and today.

So, I'd planned to can some more green beans this morning, but then I neglected to prepare any jars. It might have been an unconscious act of self-sabotage because, honestly, I'd rather poke my eye out with a hot needle than do any more canning right at the moment. I'll get back to it tomorrow, and I'll have to. I'm picking up 40 pounds of Roma tomatoes from our CSA farmers today. So I'll put off the green beans until tomorrow, and then get started on the tomatoes on Sunday. I expect to spend at least two days with the tomatoes.

This morning, I'll harvest some more beans from the garden and do some watering. Mike and I are going to make a trip into town...him, in search of spark plugs, and me, in search of the things I'll need to make pasta sauce and salsa. Since I'm not canning today, it'll give me a chance to catch up on some housework and do some sewing. Taking canning out of the mix makes it feel like a more relaxing day ahead. I hope you have an easy day planned for yourself too.

I am glad you were encouraged to nap....my old tutor told us to take lessons from a cat, think she meant the stretching bit!!!
I just love the way the snowflakes transform from sketches to works of art. . . Of course I do recognise your hard work in making it so.

Oh, that kimchi bowl looks so good! The peek at your challenge quilt is pretty fun, too, you tease! That's quite the canning day coming up (or past by now) - glad you have a day to relax and enjoy some sewing.

A days break from canning is well deserved. Hard to believe this is already the 12th snowflake.

The snow flake is going to be very pretty. I can't wait to see all 12 together. You deserve a day off canning as you really must be worn out with it. You certainly have more stamina than I do.

Those snowflakes have been fun to see stitched. I think I will miss them when all are done. My task for the immediate future is to sort through all my fabric and organize it. Some will go to our "Fabric Bargain Garden" in October. I’m now allergic to most wools so those will go as well as some batiks and tapestry kits. My stash was/is so out of control. I’m sure some others will join the wools, I just have not gotten there yet. Off to alter 2 shirts for a wedding next week. But first I need to get the stash off the sewing room floor and tables so I can sew

Canning is grinding but the results are so satisfying.

You are such a hard worker! I admire your canning tenacity and wise I had more interest in it this year than I do.
Enjoy stitching your last snowflake!

I was going to ask you where you find pear juice, but you thankfully explained your substitution. This looks like a dinner I should make sometime.....maybe without the egg depending on my mood. That new snowflake looks pretty. I like the blue color. I am looking forward to seeing your challenge project.

Yum - your dinner looks so tasty! And an afternoon nap with Sadie sounds like a great use of your time. Napping in this household is somewhat of a lesson in frustration because the phone is bound to ring or (more likely) Resident Chef decides that banging things about in the kitchen is the way to keep me awake. Funny thing - his wife, who is ever so considerate, tiptoes around when HE's having a nap!!
