Rest and Repose

Oh my goodness. The month of May has been busy for me, and my sewing has suffered for it. With the long and busy weekend behind us and the month nearly at an end, I'm taking a day at home to regroup today. I'm behind on my housework and the sewing room is a shambles. So, of course, I'm sitting here writing a blog post to complain about how busy I've been. Actually, I hate it when people do that, so I'm going to stop doing it right now.

Anyway, all of that whining to say that I'm going to try to get caught up on some of this stuff, and I'm going to fit it all in around doing some more quilting on We are the World. When last we saw that quilt, I was working at stippling some of the sashings and putting hearts and flourishes in the cornerstones.

And there I was quilting along, minding my own business, when something really awful happened to Big Bertha. The "thing that happened" is still unclear at this point. Nevertheless, she's home now and feeling fine. Hopefully, the problem won't return. That was way back on May 9th, and I'm only just now getting back on the quilting path. Obviously, it's not going to be finished before the end of the month. And that is totally okay with me. Sometimes a busy and frustrating month is a good time to re-evaluate one's goals, and I have done just that. I'll say more about that later because I really want to get on with my day right now.

Tomorrow I'm meeting with a woman from Coffee Creek Quilters. Ever since I learned about this group, I've considered volunteering for them. It's a group that teaches quilting to incarcerated women at a prison not too far from my home. Quilting has been such a positive influence in my life, and I feel ready to share the wealth and the passion. And, as a social worker, working with folks in the margins of life appeals to me. You can watch the video from their website right here. Volunteers who teach are expected to make a weekly commitment, and I'm not sure I'm ready to devote that much time yet. However, the volunteer with whom I spoke told me that I could substitute teach or there are other ways to get involved as well. I'll know more when I talk with her tomorrow.

But before I finish up here, it's time to dig back into the archives and link up to:

Val's Quilting Studio

Topics for today are Color Wheels, Crafty Projects, and Crazy Quilts. I don't have anything for Color Wheels or Crazy Quilts, although I would dearly love to make a crazy quilt one of these days. However, I have done a couple of crafty projects. If I have to pick just one, I'll pick my wine waiter.

I've made a couple of these cute little vests for wine bottles, but this is the first one that I made. I wanted to dress up a bottle of wine for the 60th birthday party of a good friend. The pattern is from Sew Happy Me, and you can see my original post right here. These are super easy to make, and I have some other ideas about how to use them listed in my original post.

So I'm just about to head out to feed the birds, and then I'm going to do some sewing. I decided to break the day up into hourly sewing stints, followed by some housekeeping chore, followed by another hour of sewing...and we'll just see how far I get. I have my trusty timer in hand, and we're just about to get on with it.

I use a timer too - break my to-do list up and then work in time periods on each item until I'm thru the list - or happy with the progress.

Way to make a difference to some women in hard times! I hope it makes a difference to at least one, so nice to know someone cares about them and that sometimes is all the difference!

That's a really nice thing to volunteer for and it gives them a skill they may never knew they could do!

Glad to hear Big Bertha is back in action. Those volunteer commitments can be scary. However, it sounds like it would be right up your ally. I'm not sure how Smitty & Gracie would feel about sharing your time. I know Mike would understand as long as the meal is in the oven or in the crock pot. LOL Have a good week.

I also find a timer useful when I have a lot I want to get done. I also play silly games for example when I set the ironing board up so I can press my seams I decided how many seams I can press before I need to iron 1 item. It gets some ironing done while I quilt.

I love the look of that top block, great color. I was going to teach art in a prison years ago, but the program never really got off the ground, it sounds really fulfilling.

Hope your alternate sewing/chore plan worked out. I can never make myself do that, once I'm in the sewing room I don't want to leave!

It's always a good thing to take some time to regroup and reevaluate. Glad you're following through with the Coffee Creek Quilters....I was hoping you would. And I see I'm not the only one who gives myself time limits. It becomes quite the game..."how much can I get done before the timer goes off". Oh! The head games we play. :)

That volunteer program does sound like something right up your alley. Hope you can work something out that will fit in with your schedule.
