Good morning, my friends. Before I go on, I need to mention that today is Tortoiseshell Cat Appreciation Day.
So it was another busy day in the kitchen yesterday. The morning was spent making and baking a Rhubarb Upside-Down Cake. Yum.
I've given you the link, but you'll need a subscription to America's Test Kitchens to open it. If you want the recipe, you can email me, and I'll be happy to send it along. It was lunch time by then, and I was still in my pajamas. The rest of the dinner could wait until later in the day, and so I made myself civilized and then spent some time in the sewing room.
Surprisingly, I was able to finish the newest Kitten in a Teacup block in a single afternoon. Having made both versions of the block twice now, I'm having fewer problems with errors. Any errors from yesterday were mainly from being in too much of a hurry. First, I made the face. This block was made to look like Smitty, and so I gave it green eyes and a pink nose.
Next, I added the paws (white socks for Smitty) and a striped tail. There was only 3-1/2 inches to work with in that piece, and so it was a little tricky adding in the stripes.
And then I just needed to add the rest of the cup, and it was finished.
Here are the four blocks I have for this quilt so far.
So, I've spent the past two days on my feet most of the time, and I was exhausted by the time I went to bed last night. Possibly I was asleep before my head even hit the pillow. I'm feeling better this morning, but still kind of worn out. I don't feel this way when I make a dinner for our family, and so I can only think it was the added stress of neighbors coming to visit that had me so exhausted. Either way, I'm giving myself a day off today. I'll do nothing but sew and sleep. Sounds perfect, no?
For today's effort, I want to sandwich and quilt the Blue Blazes quilt. It's only about 16 inches square, and so it's possible I could quilt and bind it in a single day.
It'll all depend on how much energy I have. The focus today will be on resting and refueling. If you've enjoyed this post, you can thank Smitty for his careful editing. A more purrfect editor doesn't exis....

You're right about cats and motion sensors. When we moved into our house and got the security system set up I went to the store and received a call on the way that the system was alarming. When I spoke to the installer and said our cat may have jumped onto the windowsill he asked if she could be kept out of that room??!! Uh, no, of course not!
Love that dotted kitty block! Happy "tortie day" to Sadie. We have 2 beautiful tortoise colored kitties hanging around that my husband has begun feeding, along with a couple of yellow tabbies, and a big grey fellow.
Happy Torrtie day Sadie. You are special enough to get a special day. Hope you received an extra portion of catnip.
I love your Smitty-in-a-cup block! And naturally, we appureciated Sadie from afar today. An odd thing - this was a Me day for me, too. A friend has been seriously ill for a couple days, and it has really knocked me for a loop. I stayed in my pajamas all day, cancelled all my appointments and obligations (all one of them) and sewed. Last night I took a single Tylenol PM tablet (adult dose is two) and slept 11 hours. I think I’ll stick with my gummies; they’re more gentle. And fun.
Happy Tortie. Day Sadie!
Glad that dinner went well and you can check that off your pre-trip check list. The Smitty tea cup is really cute, red is his color. Hope you got in lots of rest and stitching yesterday.
I will definitely be celebrating Happy Tortoise Shell Cat day in honor of Sadie. I was just reading an interesting article about orange, black and tortoise shell cats. I think they said that females born of parents where one is black and the other orange, the female become Tortoise Shell color. Not sure how true that is, but very interesting article.
Well then - of course I'm sending lots of special skritches for Sadie on her special day!
Glad to hear your dinner went well. I know it always seems exhausting when you're doing a meal for company and it's not surprising that you crashed afterwards.
Smitty's Teacup turned out great. If you keep up with paper piecing you're going to become an expert!
Love that striped tail on the cat,
Cats in cups? SEW cute, Barbara!
These kitten in a cup blocks are SO cute! Love your colors, too.
As someone who doesn't feel a house is a home until the cat gives it its blessing, I'm in love with these blocks. I can see them in a crib quilt, perhaps with a mouse or two in setting intersections.
I'm catching up after being gone over a week, but wanted to appreciate Sadie's day and say that the teacup block is really cute!
