Penny Power and a Giveaway!

Good morning, my friends. Welcome to Wednesday. It's been a slow couple of days here at the Three Cats Ranch. I've been sidelined from my quilting project, but my wrist is improving slowly. The pain in the back of my hand has settled down. There's still some stiffness in my wrist, and so I'll just cool my jets for another day of not-quilting. There's plenty to do on my art quilt to keep me busy. On today's agenda I have one housekeeping chore and I want to walk on the treadmill. Also, I need to make up a grocery shopping list. Aside from that, it's leftovers for dinner, and so I have the whole day to work on my art quilt. I might finish the main subject today. I've been puzzling over the background, but I think I have that nailed down too.

As for yesterday, I spent some time on my slow-stitching before heading out for my blood draw. The cat's face was finished...

allowing me to move my hoop to the bottom of the cat. And don't you know it drives me crazy when the last little bit of the design won't fit inside my hoop.

So I decided to stitch the duck and the little bit remaining of the cat's paw. That allowed me to move the hoop to encompass the last of it. Now there are just two different shades of gray left to stitch.

And then I could put off my flirtation with death no longer. I'll admit to being a bit of a needle weenie, and my veins don't always cooperate on these forays along the path leading to my final exit. When I got out of the car at the doctor's office parking lot, I noticed a penny on the ground. At first I walked past it, but then I turned around and picked it up. I figured a lucky penny in my pocket would go a long way toward getting my blood drawn with a single stick.

And I'm hear to tell you that it worked!!! Never pass up a lucky penny. Lucky pennies have saved me from getting a speeding ticket, and they've also saved us from mechanical problems when we're on the road. Mike keeps that particular penny in his truck all the time now.

It was relatively warm when I arrived back home. The bird feeders were empty. Again. It was a good time to fill them. The Steller's Jays find the peanuts almost immediately.

They can empty this feeder in less than an hour.

Back inside, I decided to avert an impending stitching emergency by making up the next block for the Domestic Affairs quilt. I'll start on this one when the kitten is finished.

And then I made a little more progress on my art quilt. Here's your peek:

Any thoughts?

As I mentioned a few days ago, we're in the planning stages of replacing the carpet in the upstairs part of our house (including the stairs). Two carpet samples were delivered yesterday. Mike picked the one on the right. I picked the one on the left. We both want the carpet on the stairs to blend in with the carpet on the main floor. The one on the right seems too gray, and so we'll go with the one on the left.

The carpet we have now was the original carpet from when we bought the house. We've lived here going on 22 years, and I don't know how long the carpet was down before we moved in. There are some places on the stairs where I can poke my finger through a hole that goes all the way through to the wood below. Yes, it's time. No matter how much I dread it, there's no getting around the expense and the hassle. If that lucky penny were really any good, it could transport us through time to a point where this job is already done. Oh well.

Okay, so I'll get busy with my slow stitching again, and then I'll get on with my day. But before I go, I have a little giveaway for you. A few weeks ago, my friend Darlene sent me a link to this quilt pattern that happened to be on sale and with free shipping. And wouldn't this be cute as next year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilt?

Well, Darlene knows me so well. Of course, I jumped on that. Only...without going into the whole sad story, I'll say I ended up with two of these patterns. I could send one back, but I decided to offer it up as a giveaway. So, if you're hot to make a cat quilt or a cat pillow, here's what you need to do.

1. Just leave a comment...any comment will do. If you can't think of anything, then tell me about whatever project you're working on right now. Please leave your comment here on the blog. If you are an email follower, simply click on the title of this post to be taken to the actual web page. You can leave your comment there.

2. You don't need to be a follower, but if you want to become a follower, you can find lots of ways to do it there in my left side bar. Also, I will ship internationally, so all residents of Planet Earth are welcome to join in.

3. If you're no-reply, be sure to leave an email address. You can't win if I can't contact you.

So good luck! I'll leave this giveaway open through Sunday, November 19th and announce the winner sometime on Monday, November 20th.

OM, the cats are so cute!! My friend has the dog with sweater but all cat at my house! I rarely comment but please know it is because I am not a scintillating conversationalist. My husband will never get a camper for exactly the reasons you mentioned. He doesn't see himself wanting to do the upkeep. (TMI my carpet is +40 years old and I am dying to replace).

I would love to make a cat pillow and mine would have to be orange with a white chin. I read once that the year on your lucky penny corresponds to the date of birth of someone trying to reach you from beyond—but I don’t think there are pennies left old enough to be my lost friends and family, lol.

When @thedailyjames (on IG) put peanuts out on a big tray, the Stellar Jays keep picking them up and tossing them back until they find the heaviest ones. It's a riot to watch them. Do the jays do the same thing at your feeder?
Leave me out of the drawing. I've got more patterns then I'm ever going to use already.

You are expecting a lot from that penny. It already did it’s job with the blood draw.

I have looked at that cat pattern before. Wish I had seen the sale, I think the rainbow scrape challenge is a great idea. My granddaughter would love it.

Thanks for the opportunity, Terri in BC

A other comment from New Zealand........have you ever been out this way? If not, you should, we live in a beautiful small country, with mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, plains, and gorgeous beaches. No snakes or crocodiles either. Plenty of quilters live here too.

Love all your travels. We hope to get to where we can travel more too! Right now we are busy with grandparent daycare. Wouldn’t have it any other way. I have made several Elizabeth Hartman patterns. Several of my grandchildren have one. Would love to win. thanks for the chance!

I completely understand the reluctance to start on a carpet installation! I had 24 hrs notice this past week, that the carpenter was coming to install about 500 running feet of mopboard (throughout an addition). Needless to say, the things in my sewing room had to be moved out from the walls and piled in the middle of the room ... all in the name of progress?!

I love the pattern! Thank you for hosting a giveaway.

Love your blog, especially being an ex Oregonian, graduated from Harrisburg High, one of 27 grads that year! Miss Oregon and my birth state of Washington. I'm currently working on my Quilt Guild's (Gold Bug Quilt Guild) yearly challenge, due Nov 29th at our Christmas meeting. The challenge is from the color wheel, I drew lime green and split complimentary plan. My less than 18" quilt will be raw edge irises. I live near a lovely iris farm.
I LOVE the cat quilt pattern!!!

Oh my! That is one of the cutest patterns I’ve ever seen! Naturally, if Alfalfa or Darla see it before Christmas, guess who’ll be sewing Christmas pajamas for their cats? (Oops, I meant for their Superiors)…

My kitties would love to snuggle on a quilt made of cats in pajamas. I would have to make some of the cats Siamese, if you please, sir. Just to keep the peace. You are my coffee in the morning, I travel vicariously with you. Thank you very much for bringing the world to me.

Our tortie, Belle, decided it was time to start bringing in her fresh catches to play with in the house as it is getting cooler outside. Needless to say,it took us 2 days to corral the last victim and release it outside for her to catch and play with again. Thanks Barbara for yur daily blog. I look for it each day and it always makes my heart warn.

Hopefully the carpet replacement goes well. We need to do the same, but it's down on the list a bit. Good to hear your wrist is improving slowly. The cat pattern is really cute. Is that one on your list for next year?

I love cats! The stories of yours are so good. I have a Hawaiian (spelling?) style pillow top basted and ready for applique. As for your quilt challenge project: lots of green may indicate a forest scene.

Here is a comment. I actually have lots of comments when I read your blog. In fact, I comment back to you all the time (in my brain - not out loud, the cats would think I'm weird). Today, I was wondering how those curtains on your next hand-stitching project (brain fog so quickly today-When quilters gather?) are made? Do tell before my brain explodes.

In a previous home we had lived in for almost 30 years, the carpet was at the life stage as yours. While not a fun project to move everything to get new carpet, in the long run it was so nice once it was done (but sadly we moved shortly after getting new carpet.....we are obviously not good at timing). I will look for a lucky penny. In the meantime, we start off every trip with a good luck kiss and it seems to be working for us. I'm glad you bought that cute kitty in PJ pattern and look forward to you making it. It just makes me chuckle as it is so full of cuteness. Not sure how you ended up with a 2nd pattern, but I'm sure whomever wins your copy will have fun making it too!

Thanks for letting me know about the bluejays eating peanuts. I had not thought of that. We try to feed the birds in the colder weather, especially, so I will remember to put some out. Thank you for the giveaway. I had just recently seen the cats in pajamas pattern - so cute.

I saw that pattern recently and thought of you, but I hadn't thought of the RSC - it would be a very fun quilt for that! And yay for the lucky penny, too. I found one on our Arkansas trip and had it in my pocket, but it seems to have disappeared. I assume it must've fallen out, so hopefully it's helping someone else now. As usual, I'm still mentally planning my challenge quilt - ha!

Sounds like you got your two-cents worth out of that penny. That is such a cute cat pattern

Magpie's Mumblings said...

I'd pick that penny up too although here we don't see them any more now that they've stopped making them.
I've never seen a Steller's jay in person so I enjoyed seeing your photos. When RC emptied the soil out of the balcony planters he discovered the blue jay(s) had been busy planting peanuts - a lot more than we had witnessed him doing.
ps - don't put my name in the 'hat' for the giveaway. I'm not a quilter (as you know).

I volunteer at a cat shelter, and this pattern would be great for a fund-raising quilt.
I enjoy your site and following your adventures, both quilt, garden and travel-related. The idea of outfitting your RV to take the kitties along is just brilliant! Who would think cats would enjoy traveling, but yours seem to have no problem with it.
Happy Quilting,
