New Day, New Doo

Good morning, my friends. I'm thankful it's Thursday, and I don't have to go anywhere. Two consecutive days out among The English is almost too much for this old bag. It was kind of a busy run-around day yesterday. I had my haircut appointment, and I had a few errands to run in town. I'm super happy with my new doo...something I almost never say. I have a good stylist, and she cut it exactly the way I wanted. This morning I'll have to style it myself. I'm "hair dyslexic," and so I'm hoping I can pull off this simple style.

There was just enough time yesterday morning to get a small start on my newest stitchery. This is Block #6 for the quilt I'm calling "Domestic Affairs." The pattern is an old BOM from Jenny of Elefantz. You can see my little bit of stitching in the upper left corner of the image below.

This morning I'll have more time, and I should be able to get a lot more done.

So, it was my last gasp before taking a bold step and whacking off my too-long hair. That isn't to say it was "long." It wasn't. But it was completely unmanageable. My hair has always been fine and thin, but I have even less of it now than I did when I was a teenager. A very short style seemed like my best bet. I went in search of short styles online, and came up with a few I liked. I showed the pictures to my stylist, and this is what she did:

We took another picture from the side so you can get a better view of the back.

I almost never like whatever hairstyle I have at any given time, but I believe I will like this. Even this morning with a bedhead, I ran a comb through it and it was acceptable. So, phew! Always a relief when I can go through life without wearing a paper bag over my head.

So back home, a second day among The English meant I had to sleep it off again. When it was time for sewing, Smitty was more than ready to get started.

The first thing he did was to push my project box off the table. That was just getting in the way.

And then he helped me choose fabrics and finish off the first two blocks for The Story of My Day. These were fun to sew together. Looking at the picture from the book, I wondered how difficult this was going to be. Those little spots of color had me curious.

The instructions were excellent. It was a little like putting a puzzle together. Here's the first block:

And here's the second:

It's going to be fun making this quilt. It will allow me to use my smallest scraps. I'm doing the blocks in the order of the book's table of contents, but they will be sewn together in a different order. Here are the first two together.

Today I have a couple of easy housekeeping chores to do. Happily, the pattern and instructions have been posted for the Crabapple Hill stitch-along for International Embroidery Month in February. It's one of my favorite stitch-alongs, and this will be my fifth year participating. You can find all the info about it right here. Here's the little peek she posted on Facebook yesterday.

Once I have my chores done, I'll probably spend most of my sewing day on this. The tracing and coloring can be time-consuming. I'll do this one with colored pencils. I've used both crayons and colored pencils when doing her designs. Crayons are easier, but colored pencils give a better result, if you want my opinion. And, if you don't want my opinion, then just pretend you didn't read that part. My brother always told me that opinions are like a$$holes. Everyone has one.

Okay, so there's no time like the present, and it's time to get started on my day.

I really like your new haircut. It frames your face well and looks good on you, as well as easy to take care of this type of style. Enjoy

Nice new DOO! It's flattering and easy to take care of. That's the direction I've gone in recent years too - easy maintenance. It leaves more time for sewing when I don't have to fuss with my hair.

The new style looks great! I, too suffer from fine hair and my go-to is a ponytail. I've done as short as you, but when I get tired of it, the mullet stage of growing it out convinces me (every time...hahaha!) that I'll never do THAT again. And Smitty is so kind to clear your workspace. That side-eye makes me believe he doesn't think you're as grateful as you should be. My Gabby likes to help keep my surfaces clean, too. I tell her no and she looks me right in the eye as she pushes whatever she can find right to the floor. She then also gives me the side-eye.

Love the new doo! It is very flattering. Easy and manageable is just icing on the cake. On my fridge, I have my go to town list and at the very top it says Don't make me go to town...tomorrow is my first meeting of the year with my quilt peeps. So happy it is Thursday!

Your new do is you! It frames your face perfectly! I hope it will be as easy to maintain as it appears. Every good assistant knows that a quilter's first purriority is clearing the workspace for accurate cutting!

Great new do! I sometimes wonder what my stylist would think of my hair now since Resident Chef has been cutting it since covid hit. He saves me $50 each time so I'm happy with what he does.
And I had a eureeka moment (I know, I need to get a life) but for the first time ever (!!) something from Crabapple Hill actually opened for me without my computer throwing a WARNING - BAD PLACE - DON'T ENTER fit. I don't know why it hates CH so much but it flatly refuses to allow me to visit to see all the wonderful things I just know I'm being denied.

Your new doo looks great, Barbara!
The 2023 Crabapple Hill stitch along will be fun to do….I am sure I would lag behind pretty much from the start, so I will pass on participating, but will look forward to following along as you do yours!
Thanks for the sewing room tour video on your blog post yesterday. What a great, creative space! And so nice to have a lot of quilts hanging where they can be enjoyed every day, and inspire future projects as well….cannot wait to see your latest challenge project on Feb 1….

Love your new haircut, it looks a lot like how I wear mine and I love how easy it is. I am a low maintenance gal when it comes to my hair. The new quilt project is cute, looking forward to watching it come together.

That is a very flattering hairstyle! Just put a little styling product on your hands and then run your fingers thru your hair and let the product hold it in place.

Definitely a keeper of a 'do', you're looking very well. Thanks for sharing.
Pretty embroidering pattern again, loving her designs.

Smitty looks a little ticked in the pic so I wasn't surprised to hear he knocked the project box over! HA I'm currently trying to grow my hair out as I think it would be wonderful to be able to pull it back in a ponytail if needed. Every time I've tried in the past, I've always had it whacked when it got down my neck. Doing a tad better this time but I have NEVER been able to blow dry my hair while styling. Always have to use the curling iron. We'll see....

Very nice new "do". The Story of My Day is going to be really cute. I like that fussy cut hand in the second block. Enjoy your refreshed sewing room today.

Your new haircut looks great on you. Smitty looks only half awake or maybe he was tired of waiting for you to get to the sewing room :-)
