Finished, but Not Finished

Good morning, my friends. It snowed most of the day yesterday. I spent some time with my slow-stitching in the morning, and then headed up to the quilting machine. When I sat down to commence quilting, this was the view out my window.

Ordinarily, I'd make myself start with the challenge piece...which is the most, um, challenging, and therefore the least desirable. Yesterday, I really wanted to finish the quilting on Trashy Triangles. I had first to make my way around the inner border. When I was this close to finishing, I ran out of bobbin thread. Of course, I did.

Okay, so pause for cleaning, oiling, and winding there. When I was able to finish it off, it looked like this:

Just the outer border was left. I tried a new-to-me motif I saw on Pinterest. Mine is a little different. I tried it out on a practice piece, and it didn't seem too difficult. When I committed it to the quilt, I was underwhelmed at how it looked.

Nevertheless, I laid it out on the floor to have a look.

Shortly thereafter, the critics arrived.

Excuse me, but did you ask my purrmission to use that motif?

Because I'm just going to tell you right here and now that this is not a quilt I can take purride in.

It passes the snuggleability test, but it's going to need some spurrucing up if I'm to use it as a napping quilt. What do you think, Smitty?

I don't know, Sadie. I kind of like it. My tummy furs are enjoying its purrfuse poofiness.

I'll take it if you don't want it.

Well, I'm taking note of Sadie's objections. I like this bit of quilting advice I received from my friend Karin: If you don't like what you've done, just throw more thread at it. In this case, I think I'll do some echo quilting, or some loopy stuff, or something. It needs a little more.

By that time, we had about an inch of accumulation outside. That's about as much as we got for this snow event. It's going to warm up some today, and I expect all the snow will be gone by day's end.

Smitty was excited to get to work on the challenge quilt.

You'll never find a better quilting cat than Smitty. "Dedication" is his middle name. By the way, those rotary cutters are in their safe closed position. His murder mittens are perfectly safe.

I've been spending an hour at a time on this quilt. Yesterday I spent two hours since I hadn't done any sewing the day before. It's looking pretty good at this stage of the game, and the most difficult part is finished. I'm expecting to get quite a bit done on it now that the most complicated tiny pieces are in place. Here's your peek.

Between bursts of sewing and quilting, I finished the laundry and made some French onion soup for dinner. It was a pretty low-key day. I like snow days when we're mostly confined to the indoors and keeping warm. Today will look pretty much the same.

Snow flurries began to fall and they swirled around people’s legs like house cats. It was magical, this snow globe world. ~ Sarah Addison Allen

If you ever need a third opinion, Sammy will be happy to chime in! He's always there when I lay a flimsy or quilt out on the floor, which I don't do very often, cat and dog hairs you know, lol!

Oh that snow does look chilly. A perfect day to stay inside, sew, and make soup.

Karin offers great advice. I used to kill myself removing stitching I didn't like. Eventually I did lear that I could cover up most disappointments with a second pass of quilting. Love the quilt though!

I wish you could send some snow our way. We got just a dusting the other evening - enough to make us not want to drive 90 miles each way to our 5th grade granddaughter's concert. But not enough to cover the lawn.

I like your friend's advise about throwing more thread at it. Great idea! I'm with Smitty though, and think it looks fine.

Throw that thread--sounds like a good idea--better than ripping it all out for sure...Though, to me it looks fine;))) as is....
Looks like you will be having a white Christmas if this keeps up...
so far no snow here--just colder days and a bit of frost on the grass...
hugs, Julierose

No snow here yet since about a week ago. Very 'dark' with cloudy skies, rain, wind and bitter cold. I'm with Smitty's vote on it has that puffy hugability and just fine.

The quilt is lovely just the way it is. Don't throw so much thread at the quilt that it becomes stiff as a board unless it is just going to hang on a wall. I like the mosaic look of the sneak peak of the challenge quilt.

Sewing while watching snow fall is one of my favorite things. All of our snow has melted quite a bit, so it's rather brown outdoors. The sun is shining today, but it looks chilly. I was considering walking through shops downtown today, but my warm house and cat are making me rethink. I have started on my challenge quilt, too, very slowly! Nice finish to the triangles quilt!

Must say the peeks of the challenge piece are intriguing! I can also say, rather grudgingly, that the view outside your window IS rather pretty. Better your window than mine, though.

Murder paws….how fitting when displeasure is shown by a cat. Your snow is picturesque. Lovely day to be inside a warm house and watch it fall. We are having a welcomed rain. It’s a good day here to cuddle up and enjoy a cup of hot tea in front of a fire.

Moving the furniture in the sewing room to do a deep clean. At the same time trying to improve on cord management of all the machines and other electrical items. Maybe a new arrangement is in order to freshen the mind.
