Memorable Mother's Day

We had such a nice dinner last night, and it was a nice follow-on after what turned out to be a busy day. Mike spent a good part of the day outside doing more yard clean-up. The place is looking pretty good...except for that one tree.

We'll figure out what to do about it eventually. For now, we'll just look the other direction.

I spent the morning in the kitchen baking a lemon meringue pie. It's my favorite, and always a winner with my family. It takes a lot of time, however, and dirties a lot of dishes. Fortunately, I was working from an empty dishwasher. When it was all finished...voila!

Between the 7 of us, we ate all but one piece. Matthew took the last piece home with him.

Getting closer to their time of arrival, I set out a spread of finger foods. Starting at the bottom, you see shrimp cocktail. A little to the right is Erik's favorite, Hot Dungeness Crab Appetizer, and some sliced crusty bread to spread it on, crackers, cream cheese, and cherry chutney, pickled carrots, chips and salsa.

And once everyone started arriving, I put down the camera and didn't think to take another picture until this morning. There was a lot of laughter. My two sons, Erik and Matthew, are very different people in their personalities and interests. One thing they have in common, however, is their great sense of humor. They keep me laughing almost non-stop when they're around.

As expected Lyndsay showed up with these beautiful hand-woven cotton fabrics from Bali.

The business cards from the makers were as interesting as the fabrics.

I love the address of this one on "Monkey Forest Road."

Lyndsay explained these fabrics are referred to as (forgive my weak attempt at spelling) "klip-klop." Lyndsay pronounced the term, and my spelling can only approximate its pronunciation. They are woven from two different colors. You can see it in this one.

Here's another that's a little more obvious. It's woven from green and red.

When I turn it one direction, you see mainly red.

Turn it a different direction, it looks mainly green.

These are going to be perfect in my landscape if I can pull it off. This photo isn't very good for color, but I'm more interested in the shapes. I can remember the colors in my mind's eye.

I've been wanting to make this quilt for a long time, but haven't been bold enough to try. Maybe armed with these fabrics, I'll take the plunge. Stay tuned.

This morning's post needs to be short. I'm meeting up with Sue for breakfast, and then getting my hair cut and colored. It's going to be another busy day. There has been precious little time for sewing, but I've set aside tomorrow as an NBS day. Our weather should be improving as the week goes on, and we're looking forward to some dinners outside this week.

In truth a family is what you make it. It is made strong, not by number of heads counted at the dinner table, but by the rituals you help family members create, by the memories you share, by the commitment of time, caring and love you show to one another, and by the hopes for the future you have as individuals and as a unit. ~ Marge Kennedy

Your shot cottons are beautiful! Lucky you to have them to play with for an art quilt. You will rock that landscape, I just know it! I used to use shot silks (warp and weft woven in different colors) in my crazy quilting. Sounds like you had the perfect Mother’s Day!!

Just the idea that all of you were together, and there was laughter and good food, makes me smile. I'm so happy for you to be able to be together again! Lyndsay has a good eye for fabric, those pieces are just gorgeous!

Barbara, I really love all your pictures, but I love the landscape near the end because it reminds me of the drive I used to take from Carlsbad, New Mexico to El Paso and then on to Las Cruces. I don't think the Organ Mountains are that tall, but it still reminds me of them.
