A Plan Comes Together

It was a good sewing day yesterday, and I'm happy to report the Appalachian Memories quilt came together beautifully. It's hard to say, but I think I might like the new layout better than the original plan I had for the blocks. Let me just go through the steps and you can decide for yourself.

First, I put a little border around the quilt cornerstones. I had an idea about how to do this that will become clear when you see the whole quilt.

Next, I sewed two borders to either side of the quilt.

Sadie was my sewing cat yesterday. She held the quilt down while I straightened it out for its picture.

Next, I constructed the top and bottom borders and sewed them to the quilt. And that there is a finished quilt top. Yay!

And I'm happy to say that my goal for November's

is complete, so I'll be linking up to the party at month's end.

Meanwhile, Sadie was lounging on my projects lying in wait for their turn under my needle.

She struck a rare pretty pose for her next picture.

Smitty was outside unhappily braving yesterday's deluge of rain. The wood box makes a good place to sit under the eaves of the house, but he wasn't happy with this change in the weather. He implored us to come outside since the weather is always better when we're out.

Okay, so let's talk about today's sewing plan. You might remember with my friend Sue gifted me with a bread mix from Erick Schat's Bakkery in Bishop, California.

When I finished baking the bread, I took apart the little pouch and made this mug rug for her.

So, when we were in Santa Nella, California, last winter, we were staying at an RV park right next door to Pea Soup Andersen's. We had dinner there one night, and I found a similar kit for making pea soup. It was contained in a cute little pouch similar to the one the bread mix came in. Weird sense of humor that is mine thought this was hilarious, and so I bought one for Sue. When I gave it to her, I encouraged her to save the pouch so I could do something similar with it. Finally, after our little meet-up a couple of days ago, the pouch has come back to me, and I'm set to do something similar with it. Yesterday I took it apart in preparation.

I have some cute fabrics for this, and so that'll be one project on today's to-do list. Also, I absolutely must do some housework. When I get going on finishing up a flimsy, everything comes to a standstill where the rest of my life's goals are concerned. Good thing I waited until retirement to become a quilter, or I'm not sure I could have held a job.

But I can't let you go without showing you one of the pictures Wyatt's dad sent me of Wyatt with his little quilt. What a cutie.

He sent me several pictures of Wyatt with his quilt. In a few he was dragging it around, Linus style, which is exactly what I hoped he'd do.

So, okay...onward. We're still awaiting the results of the presidential election. Fingers crossed. Deep breath. Stay calm, my American friends.

I hadn't realized until this post but you've made a quilt in Sadie colors. She looks gorgeous on that quilt. And while I pushed hard for using more economy blocks, your new-fabric border looks just perfect. I only wish for the kind of successful fabric shopping you just had. Your Wyatt has a contagious smile. Looking forward to your next mug rug; such a clever idea!

AH, I love the use of the little bags repurposed - just may have to look for something similar and play. Gotta love a drag around quilt - hit it out of the park! The new plan for the barn quilt works so well - and no one will ever know - designer's choice.

The new fabric you bought worked perfectly to bring this top across the finish line!! Ive loved those barn blocks from the beginning and now they can be your very personal barn quilt trail.

I am still holding my breath. Sadie looks so pretty on the barn quilt. And I wish all of my quilts would be "drag around" quilts. Isn't that why we make them?

Your barn quilt looks great, Barbara. The combination of the colors and the embroidery blocks are spot on. Really nice finish! How fun to see Wyatt enjoying the quilt; that makes it all worthwhile.

There were so many 'awwww' moments when I was reading this post! First of all, I think I may have mentioned how much I love the barn quilt once (or twice!) before. And Sadie, quite obviously feels the same. And then I saw the sweet little pouches that you are remaking into something so cute. And THEN....THEN....that adorable smiling little face on Wyatt!! Yes....so many awwww moments.....
