Heading for Home

This vacation barely got off the ground when it ended. Let me tell you, my friends. This sucks. I’ll start by saying the fire hasn’t reached our home, nor the homes of any of our neighbors. On the other hand, we are still at Level 3 evacuation...”Go! Now!” A couple of neighbors have been up to the house (theirs and ours), and everything is still standing with no evidence of the fire in sight. Still, we know it is just over the hill from us, and things could change at any moment.

With that in mind, we’ve decided to head for home this morning and to switch this smaller truck camper for the larger and more livable fifth wheel. If we lose our home, we want a larger living space. Believe me, we feel incredibly fortunate to have it available. Also, we want to take pictures of our belongings in the event we need them for insurance purposes. Those are the two things we can do to ease our minds a little.

Thank you for all your kind and supportive comments and for your prayers. It always helps to have friends along in dark times (no pun intended). 2020 is going to be one for the books, isn’t it? Stay safe and well, my friends. I’ll update as soon as I know more.

Wishing you a safe drive and safety for your home. Beaverton skies are orange again this morning, but no Smokey smell like on Monday.

Good decision to swap to the 5th wheel. When the '94 quake hit southern California we had our 23' travel trailer in the backyard. Because of damage to the house we moved into the trailer. Two adults, a Doberman pinscher and a passel of cats! It was cozy, but necessary. Stay safe!

Stay safe, Barbara. Hoping some rain comes in soon and settles things down.

So glad to hear from you. When I listened to the news last night, I was hoping that you were ok. Living in the Midwest, I can't even imagine what this must be like. We have had our house damaged by tornadoes, but it was still livable. A fire would be far, far worse! Prayers for everyone affected. Ready for this crazy year to be over.

As you are taking photos make sure to grab important papers. Insurance policy, passport, family documents etc....and quilts.
Stay safe. The winds have died down this morning here near the gorge and they are saying that the wind direction will change this weekend. I hope that helps you out. Hopefully you can also get home thru all the fires in the lower part of the state. So many of my friends have had to evacuate. I believe Mountainside High School is your evacuation point, my grandsons HS they have a really nice facility, but if you need another place to park you are welcome at our house in the ‘Couve.

From here in New Zealand it is hard to imagine what this must be like. The pictures we are seeing on the news are just unbelievable. A great plan to swap out vehicles. Wishing you a safe trip home and trusting the fires do not reach your property.

It is so heartbreaking. Prayers for your safety and the safety of your property.

Positive thoughts coming your way... wish we could send some of the rain we have had in the MidAtlantic region your way to douse the fires...
As you are gathering things together, don’t forget insurance papers, passports, any other important papers...it is easy to forget those things during stressful times.... your plan to take lots of pictures is great...
Stay safe and keep us posted as you can.

I thought of something else. You may have already thought of this but put much of the stuff you collect in you car and drive it out also. That way you don’t have to crowd the trailer and truck but still have the important items and a second form of transportation for when you don’t want to drive the big truck places.
Looks like Oregon city is not level 2.

Be safe - praying for you and for your neighbours. When you get home be sure to collect all your precious family photos and keep them with you, along with all the important papers and phone numbers. Praying you won't need them.

Such a worry to you and everyone near those fires, the TV images have been horrendous. Do hope your home stays safe, and you as well, of course. Great idea to take photos, dont forget to collect any jewelry tucked safely away, papers and passports too. At least you two and the kitties will be safe in your camper, wherever you end up.

Best decision all the way around. You'll definitely have more peace of mind than if you're a couple hundred miles away. Also you will hopefully have time to move the fifth wheel to a safe place and come back for your other vehicles at the least. Hope Erik and Mae are safe where they are. Take care my friend!

I am thinking of you --stay safe--the bigger camper may prove invaluable--hoping you won't need it, but better safe right?

I hope all goes well and the fire doesn't come close to your lovely home. But good to get back and check things out, as well as if necessary take as much out of your home as you can.

So glad that your home is safe at this point and I hope it stays that way. I thought of you immediately when I heard that there was a fire in your area. We are dealing with the bad air quality here where we live but that pretty much just means staying inside which we have been doing quite a bit of anyway since the end of February. Good idea to come home and switch to your larger trailer and take picture of things inside your house. Stay safe and I will be keeping you in my prayers.

I almost dread opening Facebook for fear I'm going to see a post from you that the fire has taken your lovely home. I am glad you were able to get back there, get some things, take photos. I'm very glad you have the fifth wheel and a place to stay. What an incredibly strange year it has been! Definitely one that needs to be behind us!

And give the keys to the vehicles to your kids. Hopefully they won't need the camper but its good for them to have it if they need it.

We are still smokey and fires are around. CalFire has done a good job battling the blazes and the SF Bay Area is slowly getting under control. Friends are either back at home or working with insurance regarding their homes. It is amazing so much is burning. Because our forests are so vast, we have been informed this will not "clear out" the dead wood. There are other places equally close and full of fuel for fires.

Returning was a smart move. The only thing that keeps us sane during this wildfire season is knowing that we have a 38' 5th wheel if we need to evacuate. Be Safe.

Oh Gosh Barbara ~ I haven't had a chance to read much anywhere and today is the first day I had a bit of time (ok I pushed stuff aside and forced me to take the time) but how strange your blog was the first I wanted to touch base with and read. I know you have much more stuff to do than to read one of my long-winded comments so I'll try to be less wordy. (ha too late already right?).

Medical records, all meds, (you know all this I'm sure) grab all your instruction manuals if kept in one place. That way you have those to show in absence of a picture, plus things for your campers you will have manuals for with model and part numbers. And any picture albums of course.

Most of all BOTH OF YOU AND THE KITTIES are the very most importance so switch 'homes' and get the heck out of these. I keep seeing how fast those fires have been known to move. One a week ago I still remember them saying it burned through something like 17 football fields in size in just a few hours.

My son lives in Washington State and I've wondered about him as I was now seeing smoke warnings all the way up there. Of course in the Midwest we see news out that way and all we hear is so much is on fire and then spread now going North so I worry if it would go into southern Washington as well.

Be careful. So lucky you are, yes, for sure. Also VERY lucky you have wonderful neighbors you had made sure had a way to reach you and took the time as they prepared to evacuate to let you guys know as well.
