A Week for Little Things and a Giveaway

It was a day of sloth yesterday, if walking nearly 12,000 steps with Sue can count as sloth. But, honestly, the rest of the day was pure sloth. We didn't get rained on too much, although there were a few showers. Since I was wanting to stop off and pick up our living Christmas tree at a nearby specialty market, I first surveyed myself when we got back to our cars. Just how wet was I? And since I was only to drowned rat status, I told myself it would be okay. This is Oregon, after all. It rains a lot here...especially on the last day of November. True to form, I walked into the store carrying my little tree in a basket, and folks barely glanced up from their own shopping.

So anyway...want to see the tree? I saw it at this store about ten days ago, and couldn't get it out of my mind.

It's kind of a Charlie Brown tree, and it probably looks larger in that picture than it actually is. It's about waist high on me. Mike and I have been getting living trees...little ones...for the past several years. Usually they're the same variety, and we have a veritable grove of the same tree in our field now. For this year, I was looking for something different.

It's grown locally. It has the most interesting "needles," which is what had me thinking about it nonstop since seeing it just before Thanksgiving.

It's still parked outside...I said it was a day of sloth. Once I dropped it off at the back door, I went inside and took a nap. Maybe I'll get it decorated this weekend, although it is a bit early for me.

The only sewing I did yesterday was some slow-stitching on the Appalachian Memories quilt block. I'm getting far enough along that I'm going to need to move my hoop to finish off some of those lines.

Okay, so I wasn't too lazy to make a little dessert for our Friday evening. I've been smacking my lips waiting to try a recipe I found on the Food Network website for Caramel Bread Pudding for Two. You can find the recipe right here. The caramel comes from four soft caramel candies. I used these.

It isn't hard to make, but it does take a little time. It's made with two croissants which are torn into bits. They have to sit soaking up the "goo" for about 15 minutes, and then it bakes for about 30 minutes. I did mine in my toaster oven, and it was done in 25 minutes. It sure did make the house small good. And here they are.

They were bubbling around the edges when I took them out of the oven. I can be made in coffee mugs, but I used ramekins this time around. Yum. It was hard to wait to finish dinner before digging in. The recipe says to serve them warm, but ours were at room temperature. I asked Mike to put a "dollop" of whipped cream on them. This is his definition of a "dollop."

And Oh. My. Gosh. This might just be the best thing I've ever eaten. And, I know...I say that about all the desserts. But this time I really mean it. It was so good, I was really glad it was a recipe for just two because if it had served ten, I'm sure I would have eaten the entire thing. It was hard enough to restrain myself from making another one right then and there. There were still candies left in the bag, after all. Oh, but no more croissants, so never mind.

Okay...so here we are.

It's time to set a new goal for...

And it's time for me to bite the bullet and finish off Wind in the Whiskers. You might recall that last month's goal was to quilt the portion inside the pink line...

Now it's time to finish off the portion outside the line. The quilting shouldn't take too long, but then I need to bind it and embellish it, which should take longer. It'll be good to get this one into the finished column, and so I'm hoping this long month will give me plenty of time to git 'er done.

Finally, 'Tis the season of giving, and I have a couple of book giveaways for you this month. First, this book:

Since I've been having fun with mini quilts, I thought y'all might want to join in. This book will give you a place to start. So let's talk about what you need to do to win it.

First, leave a comment...any comment will do...and if you can't think of anything then tell me what you'd like Santa to bring you this year. And, this is very important...if you're no reply, you must leave an email. No way to contact you = no chance to win.

Second, if you're a follower, leave a second comment for an extra chance to win.

Third, this giveaway is open to all residents of Planet Earth so comment away, my international friends.

Fourth, hm, I guess that's about it. Good luck, everybody. I'll leave this giveaway open until 12:01 a.m. (PST) Wednesday morning and then I'll let Mr. Random's elves choose a winner. Winner will be announced whenever I write my blog post this coming Wednesday.

Today's sewing really will be to get a block started for the Chicken Buffet quilt. Maybe I'll even do two blocks in December since it got short shrift last month. Also, there's a craft fair in town. I might just head down the hill to check it out.

Love seeing your little desserts, wish I could make them gluten free. Your little quits are so different from what I do that I love seeing them.

Your little Charlie Brown tree is so cute with its silvery "needles" and hardly needs any embellishments. Caramel pudding sounds really good right about now too. I've been attempting to make a small quilt every month lately too after seeing so much inspiration from Wendy's challenge participants this year.

Love that tree and how it is a bit different.

The dessert sounds delicious.

Chicken Buffet, Chicken Buffet, yippee, you are working on Chicken Buffet again. :)

I have your blog bookmarked and check your blog every day. That means I see it before my friends do usually. :)

Thanks for the chance to win what looks like a fun book.

I think your little tree is marvelous. I use to get such cuties when the kids were little and then we would plant it on the hillside - those pines that are to the side of the lane are all former Christmas trees - along with some that they got in grade school for Arbor day. I have that book, so leave me out of the draw.

What an interesting variety of tree, lovely. Desserts don't last long around me either, LOL!!

I so enjoy how your sewing is your priority and hopefully one day I'll be able to say that. I try, but when one is a caregiver it doesn't always work. Anyway love how much you get accomplished and your canning (especially the pickled stuff). I've always been a big canner but not so much in later years.

I don't think your little tree and the one pictured on the tag look similar. Yours is a little leaner, don't you think? But it is a nice tree just the same. Will you decorate it?
That dessert looks yummy. Werthers also make a caramel that is easy to chew and doesn't get stuck in your teeth.

Sorry to be the one who messes up the count, but please do not enter me in the drawing. I already have this great book! I just came to say your little Christmas tree is so cute! And that dessert does sound delicious. I need to think about the desserts for two so that I can limit my intake.

Recently found your blog and loved reading the last year of entries. Your kitties and great, I miss my Gizzie Girl but haven't found a replacement as yet. Love your Charlie Brown tree, it will grow up to be beautiful. The offer of the book is interesting, would love to enter, thank you for the chance. Looking forward to many enjoyable reading adventures.

I still need to pick up our live (but not living) tree. We're in AZ now, so no tree farms to cut our own.

My list for sewing in Dec is a little on the crazy side. Hoping for 6 weighted blankets, 2 holiday dresses, and a few cute bags. Wish me luck.

Love the tree....we had one and it did well for a couple of years. Then just as quick as you blink it died ....we think it was the heat and dry spell that took it. Love the shape and color of it though.
You got me with the dessert for two....I will look for the items for it at the store tomorrow....too yummy I am sure.

Well, don't you know that I have bookmarked that recipe for future use. If it weren't for the 4-5" of snow we've had (and more falling) and being leveled by a nasty head cold, I'd be making my way to the grocery store for those croissants and caramels. Yum! I agree with Mike's idea of a dollop too. Love the look of your little tree; it's perfect! If I can muster up the energy, I'll do a bit of sewing today. If not, it will be NapCentral, while I get over this cold.

I’m lucky I don’t have caramels and croissants at home - your dessert looks scrumdiliscious. (Gee, Siri was no help spelling that one so I just know it’s wrong) The CB tree is already so pretty but I’m looking forward to seeing it decorated . Great idea to buy living trees to grow your “garden”! I asked Santa for an under cabinet CD player and a Grunge color card. I know, I went way over board but I need to tame the Grunge addiction some how...

Laura said...

Thanks for sharing your sewing and cooking insights and your lovely photos of all things quilty, "in the outdoors" and of course, your marvelous felines.

mangozz said...

That is such a cute little tree! I'm happy to see that you are buying live trees. I love bread pudding and should probably try this one for two instead of making a whole casserole dish full and pigging out. I love small and mini quilts and would love the chance to win this book. Thanks for the opportunity.

Your new road must be a heaven on earth in the rain. Something I take for granted but when I think of the pouring rain and you going up or down your hill it must be such an improvement. Love your tree and the Paprika app earned its keep by putting that caramel bread pudding in my recipe box. You give me soooooo many ideas with recipes. Do you have a calorie count on that? Im sure it is worth it. Drowned rat in the store. Ha! People must have given you a wide berth which is helpful when you are wanting to get that tree to the checkout line. Enjoy your day.

Look at all the comments! It is a great book and would make a lovely addition to my quilting library. I just love your living tree! I don.t think I have every seen such a wonderful little tree. Enjoy! I put my tree up early this year no reason why just wanted to do it. I have a December birthday so usually I don’t start Christmas until the birthday celebration is over. Keep on sewing sometimes we all need. Day of sloth! Just re harming your batteries I say.

Patti said...

Your Christmas tree for this year is so cute. I love that you will plant it later. I also enjoy making little quilts. Sometimes need a quick sense of accomplishment, which is when I make some type of a little quilt. Alough some of the patterns can be more complex.
