A Bad Day for Kitties

Have you ever noticed how kitties have perfectly synced clocks that keep them on their strictly timed routines? Part of the routine around here is that when 8:00 a.m. rolls around, they are allowed out to terrorize all critters great and small. Yesterday, it was their day to go for their routine check-ups at the vet, and so their schedules were disrupted. Eight o'clock came and went...then nine o'clock...then ten o'clock...and WTF?

Helllllooooooo...my needs are not being met.

When I headed down the stairs, this is what I saw.

Did you forget something? Smitty, did you ask them? Did they forget about us?

Not too much time passed before the dread kennels came out and kitties went in. Vigorous yowling ensued.

They were seeing a new vet because our old one packed up her office and left town in the dark of night while we were traveling. It was kind of weird, and I'm sure there's a story there, but I don't know it. Anyway...these new vets came highly recommended on our community's Facebook page, and so we gave them a try. It was a busy place, but there was lots of gentle handling of the animals, and we all came out of the ordeal unscathed. (Sadie has to return to have her teeth cleaned.) While I was there waiting to pay, I noticed these signs hanging on the wall in the waiting room.

And this one...

They had one for dog wisdom, but Smitty thinks "dog wisdom" is an oxymoron. (Actually, I tried to find the dog one online, and I couldn't find the same one.)

When we got home, we checked the mailbox, which hadn't been checked for several days. Inside, I found this gift from my friend Ann. These are thread spool pin doilies. Ann told me she went looking for some pretty ones for her own sewing room. When she wasn't able to find them, she made up her very own pattern.  She makes them with six strands of embroidery floss and a size 1 steel crochet hook. They are a little larger than a quarter.

So I took them downstairs and chose the teal one (since I was going to be sewing with teal fabrics) and put it on Big Bertha. Doesn't she look all pretty now? And no doubt, my sewing lines will be straighter.

So, thank you, Ann. What a sweet gift!

And as long as I was sitting there, I got to work making the Rainbow Jubilee quilt blocks. These are the green ones...

and these are the teal ones.

The only other sewing I did yesterday was to stitch down to the last color on the latest Sundress block. Only the pink stitching is left, and that should easily be finished up this morning.

So, I thought I'd have more time for sewing yesterday, except that I got a bee in my bonnet to use up a little half-pint box of blueberries I had in the refrigerator. We could have just eaten them as is, but no. Since I already had my weigh-in at the doctor's office on Monday, I decided to go hog wild..."hog" being the operative word in that sentence.

There was only about a cup of blueberries to work with, and I remembered making some little miniature pies out of mason jar lids once. You can see all about how to do it at this link right here. You'll see at the link, she's using peaches. I made the fruit filling thus:

1 cup of fresh blueberries
2 tablespoons of sugar
2 teaspoons of fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon of lemon zest

The crust was made the way she shows on the video. I was all set to do it in wide mouth mason jar lids, but then I noticed these little ramekins in the darkest back recesses of my cupboard. I picked them up at a clearance sale once, many moons ago. To my recollection, I've never used them. Surely, ten years ago or so, I was preparing for this very moment. And lookie there...

The little ramekins are about 3 inches across and about an inch deep. They were perfect for these little pies...more like slab pies, if you want to get technical. We had them for dessert last night with a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream.

Okay, so my one and done lemon cheesecake mousses led to a two and done little miniature slab blueberry pie. And now (cracking the whip), we're returning to our diet. No more messing around. But, you know...that's life. Ya gotta have some fun once in a while, right?

Today the window washer guy is coming. The last time I mentioned the window washer guy, you gave me a bunch of grief about it. But here's the thing: I'm not climbing up on the roof to wash the windows, so just forget it. The window washer guy has been doing our windows for approximately 30 years, and doing a mighty fine job of it. We've grown old together, so why would I stop when I've got a winning streak going? Oh wait...did I just make a pun there? I think that counts.

While he's here, I'll get back to work on the black and white blocks for the jubilee quilt. Hopefully, I'll get them all sewn together and then I'll be ready to move on to the next thing...which happens to be Todd the cat's pawtrait. Here we go. On with the day!

Hopefully Sadie will not have to have teeth pulled. Kirby had to have 9 pulled! Poor guy, doesn't have many left!

Desert looks good. It is too hot here to turn the oven on!

Sounds like the bad day for the kitties wasn't too terribly horrible. You got pretty close to caught up on the RSC. Those little blueberry pies look very yummy. I'm trying to get back on track with my eating habits after all the running around we've been doing. Hope it's easier for you and Mike.

Glad the kitties got a good report. I recently moved to a different city and had to change vets as well. It was a busy place but I really liked the vet and the Vet Tech, so we will return when needed shots are due. We just made a visit to get to know them and find the office. You know kinda like finding a new primary care physician... Which I have yet to do for myself. The little blueberry pies look delicious . Like the sign said live life to the fullest! Oh maybe another pun! Love the Sundress, and the green blocks. I should do thT with my scraps as they are taking over the sewing room and desperately need taming. Scrappy sewing is one of my favorites! Have a great day!

Does your window washing guy travel? I've got a house full of windows that need to be washed. I'd be glad to pay someone to come and wash them.

The Yogi quote made me giggle! As did the looks on your kitties' faces! Your RJB blocks are very pretty! I like that you mix batiks with 'regular' fabrics. I like to do that, too! :)

LOVE those kitties! And the ramekins too! They are all just adorable! And just the right size!! The pies look fantastic, and the sundress just gets cuter and cuter. I think I am going to have to go find me some plain color fabric, just to make that dress. Yes, yes, I do have a closet full of fabric. However, none of it is plain colored. And none of it is anywhere NEAR enough to make me a dress. Hmmm...poor planning on my part, I suppose.

We are planning our next camping adventure, and it has us going out to AL.....and I know where the fabric store is in Huntsville!!

That being said, I would love to know the backstory on the vet...

Those do look like two great recipes! I don't have a food processor so it would be a lot of chopping for me.
I find that kale is hard to chew with crowns and other assorted implants and assorted fake teeth.

Those spool doilies are very cute! I don't think I've ever seen anything like them. May have to invest in a size 1 hook & try my hand at those.

Great signs at the vet's office. Funny that you thought Smitty would need to come back for teeth cleaning, but it's really Sadie. Glad they made it through OK.

Another yummy dessert & those ramekins are classy too!

Thanks for mentioning the spool pin doilies. I hope they help you stitch straighter. Enjoy.

I'm sure the kitties were in a snit for a while but I'm sure they got over it pretty quick. I love the signs.
