Northwest Quilting Expo

This morning I made my way to the Northwest Quilting Expo. It was opening day for the show, and it was surprisingly crowded for a Thursday morning. I found myself trying to get through the quilts as quickly as possible so that I could get out of there. Maybe I've just been to too many quilt shows, but this one left me feeling a little disappointed. There were lots of special exhibits, and within each one, the quilts started seeming repetitive. The special exhibits far outnumbered entries into the show from "regular" quilters.

Because I was overwhelmed by the crowd, I spent almost no time looking at anything offered by the vendors. When I left, I still had grocery shopping to do. By the time I got home, I was completely wiped out. I ended up taking a two-hour nap, which I'll probably regret when I'm lying awake in the middle of the night tonight. Fortunately, there's nothing going on early tomorrow morning. Before I start showing you pictures from the show, however, I want to back up to yesterday in my own sewing room.

There was plenty of time to sew the binding on the Written in Thread quilt.

As long as I was in a binding mood, I also sewed the binding onto the FMQ Stitching Sampler.

The Written in Thread quilt is small, just 22 x 28 inches, and so there was plenty of time to hand sew the binding this morning before the show.

Here's how it looks from the back.

Tomorrow morning I should have plenty of time to sew the binding on the other once since it's even smaller.

As for the quilt show, I'll show the quilts in batches day by day until I've shown them all. For today, I'm starting with the quilts by the "featured quilter," Lisa Jenni. There were many more quilts on display from Lisa. I just picked the ones that most caught my eye.

I'll put the information about each quilt first, then show the quilt, and in some cases, I'll show you some detail from the quilt.

I found myself wondering how she did those circles so that they appear to be unattached.

I like how she's quilted the fish differently.

That's all I have for today. There will be several days of quilts, so stick around.

Fascinating! Just how did she achieve those ovals/circles that float underneath. And I love how some of those fish appear to be smiling.
Written in Thread is a great little finish - for your quilting room?

I love the circles and will be doing a bit of searching on google later to see if I can find how it is done. Your written in thread is beautiful and I love how the quilting looks. You always satisfy my interest in how the quilting looks from the back, it's such fun to see the textures it creates. I didn't go to the festival of quilts this year as last time I found it a bit disappointing as it was very crowded and the quilts were quite similar at times. I think I need to visit some smaller shows.

I don't like crowds either. Written in Threads is just beautiful! I would hang her in my sewing room. If you ever find out how she did those ovals, let us know. I think we all want to know. Have a great day! Blessings, Gretchen villacrestfarm@gmail.com

I just stumbled upon this tutorial for a circle block, I think this is a similar idea to the circular portions of the quilts in your photos. Do you think that the fabric underneath is fused in place and then stitched during the quilting? So it looks like it's floating?

Once again we miss on connecting--probably passed each other and didn't know it.
I was disappointed at how many quilts did not have tags--almost touched them to look for the labels. Wonder if it was a time issue. I'm not sure I even found the "regular" entries. I really enjoyed the old quilts and the Cover to Cover quilts.

Threads is just beautiful and I like how you are finishing off the FMQ sampler. Large crowds make me 'shiver', too and a shame it ruined your day. Her circles look like a form of reverse applique but no stitch down close to the edge - caught with the quilting - she seems to like the 'dimensional' in all her pieces.

I understand about getting out of the crowds, that's how I feel too. Ugh. Interested 'featured quilter' quilts. She does seem to like that "grass blade" form with circles. Really liked her Fish quilt!
