Back to Basics

We had a great weekend at our annual get-together with friends. The weather was hot on Friday evening, but cooled off nicely for Saturday. We headed back Sunday morning and relaxed for the rest of the day.

Our friends have ten acres of property near Seaside, Oregon. About half is "native" and our friend Jan has spent a good amount of time creating a pretty garden of the areas close to the house. The rest is open field. Aside from visiting with friends, I like just wandering with my camera and taking pictures of anything that catches my eye. Here are some things I saw this weekend.

These are alder trees.

These little berries looked like miniature apples. They were only about the size of a thimble.

There's lots of old rusting discarded junk around. When it's cropped just right, it makes for an interesting shot. I can almost see an art quilt in this one.

It was a little too warm to think about a fire on Friday evening, but perfect for it on Saturday.

Today I'm unpacking what's left in the camper...not too much. Also, I'm catching up with housework and I'll finally get to plant the echinacea plants I grew from seeds this year. Since they haven't bloomed, I'm wondering how they'll fare this winter. There's also watering to do. At the top of my list of priorities for the day is sewing the sleeve and label onto the Quilting Snowladies and tracing out the next block for the Bee-utiful quilt. So...lots to do, and hopefully, enough time. But only if I get going right now.

Love your photos! Did the kitties miss you? or did you take them? Can you give me any advice on visiting Portland? If you only had one day there, what would you recommend?

I haven't enjoyed a fire yet this summer -- good reminder, I need to fit that in! It sounds like you had a lovely weekend, always good to get away for a bit. :)

Your photos are wonderful. I especially like the rusty wheel; I agree, there is potential in that photo for a quilt (or at least color inspiration)! Wendy at piecefulthoughts@gmail.com

I see a quilt in the rusted discard, too. Beautiful flowers and trees. I can tell you had a restful weekend. We had a rare cold front come through over the weekend. It dropped the temps 20 degrees. That sounds wonderful, till you realize it was still in the mid 80's. It was 107 when it came through! Don't get me wrong. Upper 80's and lower 90's have been wonderful for August!

Love the photos. We had a great fire at the end of July when we did a 26 hour camp with our guides. We had a cook out making a no utensils dinner and later we sang, toasted marshmallows and drank hot chocolate. It was such a lovely evening and we sat and chatted round the fire until midnight.
