Catbird Seat

There was a lot going on in the sewing room yesterday. The Yard Art block sets are FINISHED! (Takes a bow.) Is it okay to celebrate something that has taken 3 1/2 years to accomplish?

I mean, if you think about it, I could probably run a marathon if I had about five years to finish. If I were immortal, I could probably swim the Pacific Ocean. For today, I'll stick with flamingos and palm trees, but I'm putting the Pacific Ocean swim on my to-do list. My very long to-do list.

All that was left yesterday was to top-stitch their bodies and their legs.

And then, just so you know I'm not kidding about finishing them, I laid them all out on my design floor.

Here are the fabrics I'll use to finish the top.

This was started during the Dark Ages, when I actually followed the instructions in the book and cut the strips for the borders and binding at the beginning. The binding is cut three inches wide! I'll have to cut those strips down because, these days, I always make my bindings 2 1/4 inches wide. I don't know how I'd use three inch strips at this point. How wide do you make yours?

But that's not all that was going on in the sewing room yesterday. It seems that Miss Maggie found her way to the catnip stash. That would account for her glassy-eyed stare.

What's up, Maggie? You're looking weird.

Oh, whoa, Man. Nothing...really nothing... I've just been thinking about something. Get this, Smitty: "Every one of us is in the cosmic perspective, precious. If a human disagrees with you, let him live. In a hundred billion galaxies, you will not find another." Yeah. That's a quote from my main man, Carl Sagan. Deep, man. Deep.

Maggie, what's going on with you. I've never seen you like this before.

I've simply discovered the meaning of life, Smitty. "We are travelers on a cosmic journey, stardust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools of infinity. Life is eternal. We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other. To meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment. A little parenthesis in eternity." And that was my other main man, Paulo Coelho. Yeah. Cosmic travelers...you and me, Smitty.

What a minute...I KNEW IT! You've been into the catnip, haven't you? You have to use this stuff responsibly, Maggie. Good grief. This stuff is strong...I mean, it's organic! AND gluten free!

How much did you use?

Did you know there are as many atoms in a single molecule of your DNA as there are stars in the galaxy? We are, each of us, a little universe. Whoa.

I mean, just look at the cats in this quilt. So many colors!

Maggie, Maggie, Maggie. Those are just my mom's weird color choices. I think we're going to have to sit here for a while so that you can come around. Geez. You have to go easy on that stuff. It can blow your mind.

And there you have it. If you don't talk to your cat about catnip, who will?

Groovy dadd-i-o, uh, I mean cat-i-o!!! Glad she's got Smitty to help keep her from falling off the deep end with that stuff LOL!
I cut my bindings 2-1/4" too. I've never heard of cutting them 3"!!!

Ha, reminds me of the first time Creamsicle found the Kitty Hooch mouse. CC just stared at her like, "Dude, it's not even the fresh stuff."

And this is exactly why we keep our catnip in the back of the kitty dish drawer..behind the travel water bowl for the big canine sister. Some kittykats just have no self-discipline when it comes to the some things. It would be like giving the grandkids the nod to help themselves to the wet bar.

It's good to see Smitty and Maggie sharing their stash and chilling in the sewing room with you. Nice job getting them together.

Oh wow. That sounds like some mind boggling stuff going on there. Ya gotta learn to take it easy on the nip Maggie. I hear it can give you a wicked hangover afterwards.

Good to know that Maggie goes to cosmic deep thinking instead of "where's the cookies". It looks like that catnip jar is almost empty, I thought you grew your own, but I guess it gets eaten as fast as you can grow it :)

It's been a bit chaotic and distracting here so I've not been able to get my regular fill of the Three Cats Ranch until this morning. The first thing I noticed, apart from your wonderful, juggernaut quilting progress (!), was Maggie. WT? Then I saw the end date above Gracie's picture and my heart snapped. I am so sorry. I've spent the past 20 minutes racing back through your posts to find out what happened. You looked after her well and I loved the pic of George and Gracie snuggling together like two halves of a love heart. Beautiful. That's exactly the way she'd want you to remember her. I bet those two fur balls, and Krissy, are having a grand old time across the rainbow bridge. And now you've done it again, opened your hearts and home to the lovely Maggie who so clearly needed to join your family - yes, even Smitty. She's gorgeous. Those violet-blue eyes! I've enjoyed the fast-forward from grrr-ing to tolerance and now 'friendship'. Sure, there will always be a place for a well placed claw, but that happens in the best of families! So glad Maggie has taken to your travelling so well - just like life, you never know where it's going to take you. So I'll end off now, still a little heartbroken about Gracie, but feeling good about the future of Three Cats Ranch. xx

Oh Maggie sweety you need to take care with the catnip. I've hidden our supply for a while as Picasso was demanding more and more! I love the flamingo quilt blocks and like you I use 2 1/4inch binding.

Another vote for 2.25" bindings. When I manage to get that far. Oy.

Hmmmm, Smitty's turn to do the catnip intervention, huh? Heeheehee

Oh my, when did Smitty become so responsible? Hope Ms. Maggie takes his words to heart. Congrats getting those blocks to the finished point.
