Eleven Little Finishes

Just call me "Crash" because that's how my day started. Let me explain.

We have a refrigerator in our laundry room. I think of it as a refrigerated pantry, and I put the stuff I don't often need, but want to keep around. Some of it needs refrigeration, and so it works well to have the extra space. While I was putting away the food from the camper yesterday, I had three bottles of Mike's Black Cherry Hard Lemonade...which just happens to be among my favorite adult tasty refreshing beverages.

The three remaining bottles were stored in a handy six-pack the way bottled beverages often are, but I say to myself, "Hey...why waste all that space with those open slots? I'll just take the bottles out and put them on the top shelf." And then the other, smarter part of myself is saying, "Hey...someone is going to reach in there and knock those bottles off the shelf onto the floor. Wow, that would be a bummer."

"Nah," I answer the other, smarter part of myself.

So guess what? The very next time I opened the refrigerator...that would be about two hours ago...I did exactly that. And let me tell you, that bottle absolutely exploded. Tiny little shards of glass went everywhere! I think some of them even made their way upstairs into the bedroom directly above the laundry room. And since the laundry room is where the kitties' dining room is, all of their food and water was contaminated with broken glass as well. Not to mention their litter box. Oh yes, and this was the refrigerator after all, and so all of that red tasty refreshing, now deadly, liquid ran under the refrigerator as well. I'll admit it: I said the "F" word more than once.

So what else are you going to do but start cleaning, which explains the two-hour gap between what shall be forever known as "The Red Incident in the Laundry Room" and my sitting down to write this post. I knew you'd want to be apprised right away.

Here's the deal: So, how do you clean up a wet mess filled with broken glass? I threw down raggedy towels to sop up the excess liquid. Then I took those outside and shook them out really well in the grass. Then I threw those into the washing machine. Then, I swept up the glass. Then, I had to move the refrigerator, which I'm thinking hasn't been moved since the Paleozoic Era. I worried that there might be something mummified under there, compliments of you-know-who.

Who? Me?

Fortunately, there was nothing recognizable, although I will say there were some things under there that were not of this world. So I used some more raggedy towels to mop up under there. Finally, I got to the Pine-Sol stage of the operation, and now I'm waiting for the floor to dry. I'm afraid the grout between the tiles of the floor might be stained permanently red in those areas. Some bleach will probably take care of that. I'm waiting to see how it looks when its safe to go back into the room.

Okay. And let me just end this story by saying this: I'm writing down the names of all of you I see laughing. You won't know when or where, but you might want to start looking over your shoulder now.

As for the eleven little finishes, prior to The Red Incident in the Laundry Room, I finished up the stack of quilts for the quilting snowlady. That was the most intensive part of the block, and so I expect the rest of it to be finished pretty quickly.

Today just happens to be:

Val's Quilting Studio

Today's theme is Organizational Tips, and I have a good one for keeping track of your sewing machine needles. You can read my post from June of 2013 right here. Scroll to the bottom to find my tip for using a magnetic strip bulletin board.

Before The Red Incident in the Laundry Room occurred, I was getting my shopping list together to go to the grocery store. Guess I'll get back to it. And after all that fun, I have my doubts about how much sewing I'll get done today. I hope your day is less eventful than mine is turning out to be.

Ugh! I feel your pain about the mess. The broken glass alone makes me shiver. At least you don't have a canine vacuum cleaner who always zooms in to help. Then it's like cleaning while doing aerobics to keep her out of danger... It's funny, because when we're kids and spill something or break a glass, you think that as an adult you won't ever do that again.... Just like getting pimples... Wish someone had warned me that they don't just suddenly stop when you turn 20! LOL

A tip I saw was to use a piece of bread to get the tiny pieces. I would think that it would need to be mostly dry, though.

I confess I laughed at the cherry bomb but only in sympathy, really. If you took Kristine's advise and used bread to pick up the pieces you'd probably need a loaf, just sayn'. I only wish we had a quilt shop like Drain, OR (love the name) but our tiny town can barely support the auto parts store, not Napa but we don't complain.

Oh dear I'm afraid I'm still giggling at the picture you've created in my head. I'm sorry you ended up wasting valuable stitching time cleaning up the mess and worrying that the fur babies could be injured by the glass shards. Dry bread does work well to collect up the tiny glass pieces.

Pink grout doesn't sound all that bad. :) You should have just sucked down those Mike's while you were at the beach! Remember that for next time. I do hope you managed to get all the glass....I always seem to find glass bits months after an actual "incident". And I was NOT laughing so don't come looking for me missy, but I was thinking "thank God it wasn't a dozen eggs" as those are the pits to clean up.

Laughing? Who me? Never. I do think I will go outside with Smitty.

Sounds like a rough start to the day. I hate it when spur of the moment cleaning opportunities present themselves. It's just not fun.

I didn't laugh - been there, done that kind of thing - and probably used the same repeated words.

Black Cherry Lemonade? I've never heard of it but I'll be getting me some of that. You know I would never laugh at you, LOL. Those tiny slivers seem to hang around for a while, I usually find any left overs with my bare feet, that works as good as bread.

No laughs here either....I did it with two bottles of red wine, in the garage . what a mess to clean up, and the stain is still in the concrete!

The worst part...loss of the elixir. Grrrr

Hey Barb! Don't forget to add another six pack of Mike's to that grocery list! That's my favorite flavor with cranberry coming in a close second.

I am NOT laughing. I broke something glass recently enough to know how Not Funny it is, and I also said Fudge and Fooey more than once so I completely understand those F words flying. I always use paper towels and throw them away. I hate the waste, but I am terrified of those glass splinters.

And you "shook it out in the grass"....now, I know you have a bit more than a 'lot' sized place but I hope it was wa-a-a-a-ay away from everything!!!! And Mike's......really!! My fave!!!! Awww shucks!!!!! Glad no one was hurt

I promise, I'm not laughing but the stack of quilts looks great. That block is going to be so wonderful.

I have found that if I laugh at someone elses oopses, I had better watch out because my own oops is about to happen! The little quilts are lovely.

I didn't laugh until I read the part you taking our names...and I stepped on a piece of unknown something in my kitchen. If it wasn't for the fact that it was more ceramic than glass looking, I'd be writing YOUR name down! (the last thing I broke it the kitchen was glass, so I don't know where that thing came from.) I barely managed to not drip blood all over the house hopping to the bedroom - best lighting - & then the bathroom for tweezers & back to the bedroom. Ugh. So yes, I definitely feel your pain on that incident. Not to mention the loss of the adult beverages.
The Snow Ladies quilt pile looks awesome! And so does Smitty, BTW.
