Two Grandmothers Quilting Finished

Today I finished all the quilting for the Two Grandmothers quilt.  It's a good thing because Smitty nearly wore himself out helping me, and he needed a nap.

The sashings are quilted with a heart vine.  It goes with the fabric.

And here's the whole thing.  It's all finished except to do the hand-sewing on the binding.  (If you've missed the process of quilting the blocks on this, you can go here to find links for the details on the blocks and the history of this quilt.  Or don't.  It's your call.)

So that's my next bit of work to do on this.  The quilt is 48 inches square, so if I'm energetic (and my hand holds out), I might have it finished by tomorrow.  When I'm hand-sewing a binding, it stands in for my daily embroidery work.

My embroidery project has been moving along over the past week as well.  This is the first block of the Quilting Snowladies.  What a fun project!

It's a bit slow-going on this one because it's primarily stitched in stem stitch, and that is slower for my hand than my usual backstitch.  Also, there's quite a lot of detail in this piece.  It's a little more challenging than some of the embroidery projects I've tackled in the past, but not overly difficult.  Tomorrow I'll link up to Slow Sunday Stitching to show it off.

We've had a weird week of weather here in Oregon.  This morning we had a dusting of snow when I got up.  Right now the sun is shining, but it's cold.  Last week was warm and sunny.  Then it turned to our usual gloom.  Then yesterday, it rained most of the day.  Nevertheless, Sue and I went on our usual walk on the Fanno Creek Trail.  And, not bragging but...well, yes, I'm bragging.  Look how many steps I walked in a single day yesterday:

I'm certain that must be a new world record [for me].

Oh yes, and speaking of linking up...are you ready?  The February NewFO Linky Party and Giveaway goes up on Thursday.  Right now I'm going to clean the house to get ready for the party.

2013NewFO

This month, participants who link up will be entered for a chance to win the heart-shaped needle nanny.

I hope you'll be there.  After all, you wouldn't want to miss a chance to see my clean house, now wouldja?

Smitty looks like he spent the night partying in the snow with the bobcats... Wow. I 've never seen him look quite so wiped out.

Yes, I agree with Lindsey, the quilts on each of the snowman series squares are just adorable. That's going to be a stunner when it's finished.

Love the Grandmothers quilt, Barbara, you have done an amazing job with it. What a wonderful story too.

Oh, what a labor of love - enjoy each stitch as the binding is done - a wish and a prayer for that baby with each one.

You've created quite a treasure with your two grandmother's quilt. I hope you copy your blog posts about it so generations from now will have its history!

Wonderful creation. My dad, born in 1922, had a baby quilt of very similar blocks (minus the titles) stitched in light blue embroidery thread. I inherited the quilt, but the patches are falling apart and the stitching faded nearly to white.
Several decades ago I inherited the patterns (complete with blue marking chalk still on them), so 15 years ago I began to embroider blocks for my soon-to-be-adopted daughter. I used variegated threads. I managed to get one or two blocks stitched. She's now nearly 18 and has quite a few quilts I've made, but the nursery rhyme one is still in the works.
What a lovely treasure for your grandchild!

Hello Barbara & Smitty, love the finished (almost)quilt. What a labour of love! You are really teasing me with that Snowladies stitching.....gotta make a decision soon about buying it as our Australian $ is falling against the USD. Hello to Gracie too, wherever she might be hiding today.

The Two Grandmother's quilt turned out beautifully. All the different quilting motifs were fun to see. It's definitely an heirloom treasure.

I've finished one block of my NewFO for February. So I'm ready for Thursday.

Grandmothers Quilt is absolutely gorgeous. A perfect heirloom to pass down to a new generation - and soon I hope! Those snowladies are adorable too! Here's to a sunny tomorrow in western Oregon!

Your quilt is wonderful as I've said before, but this comment is about your steps!! OMG! It definitely would be a world record for me too. How long does it take to get that many steps on your walk? When I walk 1 mile, it only registered about 2,200 steps, so that would be over 7 miles on my FitBit. WOW, I am impressed. Congrats.

Of course Smitty had to help. It just wouldn't be right if he didn't. The quilt turned out really beautiful.

Wow! Again I am very impressed. I can't believe all of the sewing you get done. What beautiful work you do. Your quilt will certainly be a heirloom!

I started a quilt about four years ago named (or close to this name - I have two cats on my lap as I type or I would get up and look) Aunt Bea's Flower Basket or something like that. Has about 20 squares. Kind of a big job for the first real embroidery I have ever done. Have I three squares done. I usually work on it a tiny bit up at our cabin when I am up far earlier than anyone else.

How do you transfer your embroidery designs? I was told to use a micron pen - it's sort of a brownish shade. It seems to work well.

Do you have a certain time every day that you spend sewing? I personally have the best intentions but then don't seem to get much done.

I truly enjoy your blog - it's my fav! Thanks and happy Sunday!

You have been busy! It all looks great! I have been on a lazy reading binge. I bought a new pedometer and it just doesn't work for me. It won't register my steps. This is my 3rd one. The watch kind worked best but only if I was swing my arms. Very frustrating.

Give me some advice on a pedometer? I am wondering if I can get one that is affordable, and that works well...I think that might motivate me to get off my patootie and move!
