Blogger's Quilt Festival

It's here!  The Blogger's Quilt Festival.  I've been gnashing my teeth trying to decide which of my finished quilts to enter this year, and finally decided on this doll quilt I made for the granddaughter of a friend.

This quilt is called "Butterfly Garden" after the butterfly fabric I pulled from my stash.  Here's the back.

This quilt was made completely from scraps in my stash (batting too!) and it is 30 inches x 30 inches in size.

This past year I made doll quilts for each of my friend's five granddaughters.  You can see the other quilts right here.  It's such fun to make doll quilts because an entire quilt can be made in just a few days from cutting to quilting to binding.  When I don't have so much invested in time or materials, I feel emboldened to try new things.  This quilt was no exception.  Of the five quilts I made for this project, I worried over this one the most.

It was inspired from a quilt in a book entitled Joined at the Heart, by Ann Moscicki and Linda Wyckoff-Hickey.  Here's an image of a part of the quilt that inspired my doll quilt:

The quilt in the book was a larger quilt, but I liked the background squares and the shapes of the butterflies.  I wanted my butterflies to be made from two fabrics, and so I modified the appliques some to come up with the butterflies in my quilt.  Then I used images I found online to create the designs on their wings.  I drew the designs on with a chalk marker and then used a narrow satin stitch to stitch them out.

This quilt seemed like a perfect opportunity to try out Leah Day's tutorial for the Free Motion Quilting Challenge going on over at SewCalGal as well, and so I used Leah's motif for the free motion quilting.

I hope you like my quilt, and I hope you'll consider joining in the monthly Doll Quilt Swap at Doll Quilters Monthly.

 Doll Quilters

We have a talented and enthusiastic group of quilters, and we have a lot of fun making and exchanging our little doll quilts.

You can see more quilts in the Blogger's Quilt Festival over at Amy's Creative Side.  Enjoy the rest of the festival!

This is one of my favorites from your collection. From the colors to the butterfly theme (a personal favorite) it's both beautiful and fun.

I love this one too - I love the way the scrappy greens make the butterflies pop. I;m sure that all of the quilts you made for the girls are dearly loved.

I like the applique on top of the patchwork and the bright colors. I've never tried this before, but a doll quilt might be just the place to give it a go. Thanks for the inspiration!
