The prompt for Week 6 of the 52 Photos Project is "Capture Light Inside the Dark". This image is one from the archives.
We were having dinner our first night on the tiny island of Bonaire, which is a part of the Netherlands Antilles. Bonaire is located in the Carribbean some 60 miles off the coast of Venezuela. Some people refer to the Netherlands Antilles as the ABC Islands: Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao. Maybe Aruba and Curacao are more familiar to you. It was originally a Dutch colony, and the Dutch influence is apparent in its colorful architecture.
We are scuba divers and Bonaire is a scuba diving mecca for its warm and clean water, its vibrant reef, its relaxed culture, and its shore diving. When we go to other diving destinations, we often have to dive from a boat with lots of other divers. In Bonaire, we dive from the shore . . . just the two of us . . . on our own schedule. We love it.
It is a long flight from Portland to Bonaire, and so we were pretty happy to be there the first night. We sat at this table which was on a sort of platform that extended out over the water. I loved the way the bottle of wine looked on the candlelit table, and so I tried to capture it with my Canon point and shoot camera. I did not have a tripod, and so I propped the camera up on the handle of my knife to get the right angle, then used the timer function so that the camera was operating hands free; i.e., no shaking hands holding it and pressing the shutter. This was the resulting image.
