Mother Goose Quilt Top Finished

The past two days have been spent madly sewing after feeling deprived of sewing time earlier in the week.  This morning I went down to the Tulip Festival in Woodburn, Oregon, with my walking buddy, Sue.  I'll say more about that in a separate post.  When I got home, I spent the rest of the day finishing up the Mother Goose quilt top I've been working on.  If you are not a regular reader, you should know that there is a history to this quilt top.  If you're interested, you can read more about it here.

Having completed all the necessary embroidery repair, I set about squaring up and trimming the blocks.  Their edges were rather frayed, and so I trimmed about a half inch off all around, ending up with blocks that were 7 3/4 inches (unfinished).

My excellent helper Gracie was happy to lend her tail to the process.

Once that was finished, I added a sashing and border to the quilt top.  Here's what I ended up with.

Just to remind you . . . this is how it looked originally when I started the process of remaking it.

It took some figuring to have enough of the fabric for the outer border because I needed to have enough for the back as well.  Eventually, I got it right.  Here is the fabric close up.  Isn't this just perfect for the Mother Goose blocks?

The quilt ended up at 49 inches square, which is small enough for me to have no problems free motion quilting it on my domestic sewing machine.  I dearly wanted to do the whole thing myself, and so I'm happy about that.  I haven't decided for sure what fabric to use for the binding, but I think I'll probably end up using the same green that I used in the sashing.

Yesterday, I made my bee block for the We Bee Learning block bee.  May is my month to choose a block.  I picked a Bow Tie block that I saw on Canoe Ridge Creations.  I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. I think it will be cute made up into a quilt.

I'm going to ask participants to do something similar, using different colors in each of the bow ties and a white on white background.  I've considered asking them to keep the fabrics to a theme of some kind.  Mine are all food fabrics, but theirs could be something else.  I wonder if that's being too particular.  Maybe I'll just give them the option of sticking to a theme.

So that's my sewing for the day.  Any day that ends in a finish feels like a productive day to me.  How did your Friday go?

That is adorable. I do enjoy doing stitcheries and they are fun to make into quilts. I found one from Henry Glass that has kids on it, with four panels, so a nice one to make.

Mother Goose is turning out wonderful. Love the border fabric you found. How'd my Friday go? It was great. My neighbors returned from AZ. They will be packing up and leaving the neighborhood in two weeks as they sold their house over the winter. They were here for supper and we polished off two bottles of wine. I can't take too much of that anymore. But, it was fun. Have a good weekend.

Love the Mother Goose quilt! I followed your link and read about your mother's embroidery project (a great story and so well-written). You're right about her impeccable stitching skills. How wonderful that you have these treasured blocks. I love the border and sashing fabrics you chose for the new quilt. I agree that the green would be a perfect choice for the binding. Wonderful work, as always. :)

The Mother Goose quilt looks terrific!

I laughed when I saw your bow tie block in food! For the last couple of weeks I've been helping a friend find fruit & veggie fabrics to make a couple Jelly Roll Race quilts!! (And she prefers to have 40 different fabrics, rather than use repeats...)
