Blustery Day

Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.

~Anthony J. D'Angelo~

It was a stormy and windy day where I live.  I understand that 17,000 of my neighbors in the city are without power as I write this, but our power stayed on all day.  Now, pay no attention to me as I write this, because I'm about to jinx myself.  In the years we've lived in this rural area (since 2002), we have never had a significant power loss.  A power loss is a big deal for us because if we lose our power, we also lose our water.  If there is no electricity, there is no pump to pump water from our well.

The wind gusts were strong enough today that they might have shut down our wind turbine, which has an automatic shut-off for high wind that could damage it.  When I looked out a few minutes ago, it was still happily generating away.  To be clear, our wind turbine cannot generate electricity for the house without help from the grid.  In other words, it wouldn't cover us in the event of a power outage.  It does, however, lower our monthly bills.

But you don't care about the windy weather we're having.  You want to know what I stitched up today.  It was a perfect day to start another NewFO by catching up on the Hello Sun BOM that started in January.

When this sew-along started up, I seriously considered joining in, but then decided I had enough on my plate.  After kicking a few projects out of the sewing room over the weekend, I decided I'd go ahead and catch up.  That's what I did today.  Here are the January, February, and March blocks:

These were so much fun to work on!  They are so cheery.  And I like that they allow me to use my smallest scraps.

Except for the French knots on the snowman, which were hand-embroidered, the rest of the top-stitching is done on my sewing machine.  I wanted to keep it looking like a child's drawing rather than stitching, and so I shortened my stitch from 2.4 to 1.2 and then went over it three times.  It's an interesting effect, and I think it's what gives the blocks their whimsical character.

When I started, I didn't expect to finish all three today, but they went quickly.  Now I'm waiting impatiently for April's block.

What did you do today?

You have a wind turbine? Wow, did you install it or did it come with the house. Are they expensive and how much wind do you have to have to make it work?

Love the blocks! I just discovered this quilt along too - and am just collecting the patterns until I can actually get around to sewing them. They're too cute not to make! My yesterday consisted of work and taking care of kids.

Those are just so cheery and cute!!! I lvoe the way you chose to use the machine stitching - they really do look like a child's drawings. I'm keeping the patterns but will not start on them now - too much else on the burner! I love your opening quote too - perfect!!!!

The blocks are so cute! I am also interested in the wind turbine. I am surprised you still need the grid for your turbine to power the house. Is there a way to bypass that? I think it is great that you are using an alternative source of energy. Good for you!

Barbara, these are so awesome! No wonder you had to join in. :D

Me? Today? :P I crammed in the reading and analyzing of 332 pages of surprisinhgly-interesting-but-anticipatedly-intense WWII history - specifically the U.S. warfare innovations from D-Day to the Battle of the Bulge - and somehow succeeded in writing my test-prompt essay and submitting the darned thing one entire hour before the automatic closing of the electronic door. So I get a little Blogland playtime to celebrate. :D

OK. I just think it's super-darn cool that you have your very own wind turbine!!

Are you in such a dry area that your sump pump isn't the biggest problem when the power goes out? In our area, when the big ice storm hit, that was most peoples concern. We're on a hill, so that wasn't a problem. No one on our hill even has a sump pump but other people do and they have livingroom areas in their basements which will flood if the sump pump stops operating.
