Design Wall Monday: November 28, 2011

Between cooking Thanksgiving dinner and visiting with my family, I managed to get quite a bit of sewing done.  I'm most happy to report that I finished the Checkerboard Flowers quilt top, borders and all.

It still needs quilting and binding, but that will have to wait for a bit.  After that, I finished the quilting on my November Doll Quilt swap.  This quilt is called "Field of Dreams" and it's going in the mail to England today.

This one is fairly simply free motion quilted with a few little extras.  I added a barn door just to make it look more like a barn.  It doesn't show in the border, but there are rudimentary barns and haystacks quilted there.

After that, I decided to work on some swap blocks and BOM's.  I finished this paper-pieced block for the "There and Back Again" BOM.  These are supposed to be the cloaks of the hobbits and Gandalf who came to Bilbo Baggins' house prior to setting out on their adventure.  It was fairly tedious to do and, obviously, it was difficult to make things match up properly.  I spent a whole day on this, however, and I was tired of working on it.  This is as good as it's going to get.

Then I completed a swap block for my partner who requested a traditional block in red and cream.  I looked for a traditional block from her home state of Virginia, but couldn't find anything appropriate.  I chose this block to represent my own home state of Oregon.  This block is called "On the Oregon Trail."  The colors are just right for the season, don't you think?

Also, I worked on the Blogger's BOM and had my block completed and photographed.  I kept staring at it, however.  Something didn't seem right.  After ripping out one row of it and sewing it back on, it still didn't seem right.  So I stared at it some more, and then realized that one of the flying geese units was turned the wrong way.  It was time to quit for the day though, and I didn't think I could take any more frustration.  That one will have to wait for next week.  Don't you hate it when you fix something only to realize that it isn't fixed after all?  Oh well.  Better to figure out what's wrong and fix it now than to leave it as is and find it after it's been quilted into a quilt!

Wow! That really made a gorgeous quilt top! I need to do my There and Back Again - I'm tempted to do it in applique. . . is that cheating? lol
