Matthew and the Laser Harp

My younger son, Matthew, is down in Santa Rosa, California, for a music festival this weekend.

It's a nice break from school for him.  He just finished up his sophomore year at Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, Oregon.  He's been working hard and doing really well in school, but music is his first love.

He's been sending me pictures from time-to-time while he's been at the festival.  He's pretty excited about this "laser harp," which, as I understand it, emits a laser beam that can be plucked like a harp string.  When we last spoke by phone, he was writing some music for it so that people at the festival could have an interactive experience.  This is what the harp looks like in the light.

And here's how it looks when it's operating.

Here's Matthew "being awesome," as he put it to me.

I'm not sure what the mask is all about.  Here's the rest of his face.

It's a little difficult to tell what's going on in this video, but you can hear the music anyway.  Enjoy.

This is intended as a little introduction to Matthew.  I've always said he's the zebra with the horizontal stripes.

That's a new instrument to me, it has an interesting sound. My favorite electronic musical instrument is the Theramin. You can hear it in the Beach Boys' song 'Good Vibration' ~ that sort of "wooooo-ooooooooo-oooo" sound.

Very fun. Even my guy who plays music and has a background in laser optics had not hear of a laser harp.
