Midland, Texas

We arrived in Midland, Texas, this afternoon, on our way to Oklahoma City, two days away.  We'll spend tomorrow night in Witchita Falls, Texas, then cross over into Oklahoma the next day.  I'm excited about this because this is our third snowbird trip, and it's the first time we'll head this far north.  We've always left Oregon earlier in the winter before, and so it's always been too cold.  With it nearing March, I think we'll get an opportunity to see some areas we haven't seen before--or at least, areas we haven't seen in a very long time.

Today we passed through some wide open range.  We were amused when we saw a sign telling us to stop for a school bus loading or unloading.  In unison, we said, "WHERE'S THE SCHOOL???"  And then wondered where these purported children even lived.  There wasn't even a telephone pole in sight!  Also, we learned something new today; i.e.,

as·tro·bleme   /ˈæstrəˌblim/
[as-truh-bleem]

–noun Geology .

an erosional scar on the earth's surface, produced by the impact of a cosmic body, as a meteorite or asteroid. Compare crater.

Origin:

1965–70; < astro- + -bleme (< Greek blêma shot, wound)

We passed through the Sierra Madera Astrobleme.  Who would have expected such a thing?  (Have you ever noticed how these huge craters always end up somewhere out in the middle of nowhere?  Can you imagine if one this large were to strike an urban area?  I try not to think about things like that.)

I just finished posting the entries I made while we were in Big Bend NP and out of range.  I'm hoping you'll enjoy hearing about our hikes and seeing some of the pictures I've posted.  For now, I'll just say that we're back in cell phone range and feeling like part of civilization again.  I have quite a bit of laundry to catch up on now that we have electricity and water hook-ups, and so I guess I'll get to it!

Sounds like you are still having a great time. We had some wonderful snow in Oregon yesterday. Hope you are avoiding any adverse weather on your trip.
