Some Little Finishes

Good morning, my friends. It's another day when I'm writing fast. We're going to try to get our grocery shopping for the week done this morning. As I believe I mentioned yesterday, we're having a couple of our neighbors up for dinner on New Year's Day, and I need to get some things for that. (I should actually say, "our neighbors, who are a couple," not the whole neighborhood.) And, of course, as long as we're going, I have next week's menu planned and on the shopping list too. It always ends up a big shopping trip, and it's worth a celebration when it's finished.

My yesterday started in the usual way, with some slow stitching on the "Bicycles and Lace" block for the Girls' Getaway quilt. I finished up the "Sunny Yellow Bicycle."

And that makes me officially half finished with this piece.

The next one to the right is the "Rosy Pink Bicycle." I'll get a start on that today.

From there, I took a walk on the treadmill. When I finished with my walk, I went to work making these Shipwreck Galley Zucchini Muffins. I've made these before. The recipe originally appeared on the King Arthur Baking Company website with this notation: "The recipe for these moist, nicely dense, and flavorful muffins comes to us courtesy of the Shipyard Galley food shop in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts." And I can't say I disagree with that description.

These are made with whole wheat flour, four egg whites (in place of the two eggs), shredded zucchini, chopped pecans and golden raisins. They have a nice texture and a nice cinnamon flavor. I should warn you that the recipe makes two dozen muffins. I'm making just half the recipe.

I had a small housekeeping chore to take care of while those baked. When I'd had my shower, I went to work hand-sewing the binding for the Phenology quilt. Usually when I'm doing hand stitching, I'm sitting sideways on our couch (so I can put my feet up). I set my supplies on the back of the couch to my left. Here, Smitty was resisting mightily the urge to push everything off onto the floor.

Those are my binding clips. That would have been an unfortunate thing for him to do, but he was a good boy and left everything alone. And with that bit of help from him, I was able to finish off the Phenology quilt. It ends up at 16 x 16 inches.

Here's how it looks from the back.

I'll be moving along to my list of WIP's soon, and so it seemed a good idea to trace out the next names and places for two more quilt blocks on the Shop Hop 4.0 quilt. When I get around to it, I'll be making suitcase blocks for Missouri Star Quilt Company in Hamilton, Missouri,

And Sarah's Fabrics in Lawrence, Kansas.

I'll say more about those fabrics when I get around to making the blocks. And if you missed my transition from Shop Hop 3.0 to Shop Hop 4.0, these are the blocks I'm making now. Cute, huh?

And that was all the sewing I did yesterday. If there's time for sewing today, I'll probably get to work on the baby quilt I've promised a friend. I'll be using this fabric.

I'm kind of resistant to starting anything new in these last few days of 2024. My WIP's list will grow by one if I start before January 1st. Oh well. I'll still finish the year with fewer WIP's than I started with, so it's probably okay.

For now, I must get on my way. Those groceries won't buy themselves. (They won't pay for themselves either, but they will keep us alive.)

We braved the masses and hit the grocery store this morning too. Always a huge relief to get outta there and back home.
Zucchini muffins have to be one of my all-time favourites but there won't be any for awhile here while we concentrate on eating up the glut of chocolate we received for Christmas.
I like those sweet little suitcases!

I have to keep my clips in a drawer - Wilbs won't leave them alone. I'm sure it was torture for Smitty, to miss out on that fun opportunity. I love that bug fabric!

Those bicycles are really cute. Hope you survived the grocery trip, I think we need to run out for a few odds and ends before the holiday. We won't cook tongitht, it's cheese, crackers, fruit and wine for New Year's Eve. I hear you about starting something before the new year. I had to do that with the guild BOM. It was going on the list anyway, but means I broke even for this year in terms of in and out.
