Good morning, my friends. Ahhhh...Saturday. It's a good day. Saturday might be my favorite day of the week, although I can't really tell you why. Possibly because it's the one day of the week I was able to sleep in as a younger person, and I grew fond of it for that alone. When I was a child, we attended Sunday school and church on Sunday. We went to two church services because my dad sang in the choir and my mom played the organ. And let's face it...when you're a kid, church is booooorrrrrring. Probably my fondness for Saturday started back then.
It was a fairly productive day yesterday. When I realized it was
I forgot all about the housekeeping chores I'd planned. It's important to follow the rules in all things, wouldn't you agree? After all, you wouldn't want to end up like this guy:
So, anyway...I take no chances with things like that. When I'm told not to do something, I definitely don't do it...unless dessert is involved. Then, we consider our options.
Okay so with all the newly-opened free time available to me, the kitties and I headed out to fill the bird feeders. They were on the hunt for snacks.
It's always good to get out and stretch your legs.
Hmmm...something of interest here.
I took a little walk around. With so much snow and cold weather this winter, I'm concerned about some things in the landscape. Fortunately, the bleeding heart seems to be making a comeback after being buried in about four feet of snow for weeks. It has the sad position of being where the snow slides off the roof and collects in deep piles.
The daffodils are just a little closer to opening. We really need a sunny day, and then I think we'll see them.
The wisteria is showing signs of life. This one has only been in the ground for one whole season, and it has yet to bloom. I'm hoping we'll see some flowers this year.
I've been worried about this deep blue clematis. It has been in the ground through two seasons, but it's still a very small plant. I believe I'm seeing some green sprouts there, but it's hard to be sure. Obviously, there's a lot of yard clean-up to do. We're just waiting for some decent weather.
I checked the red clematis out front. I'm most worried about that one. There are still no signs of life. Here's a shot of it from last summer.
When we bought our house back in 2002, there was a clematis growing in this same spot. It died following the first winter, and it was only replaced two years ago with this current one. If this one dies, I'm going to have to think this just isn't a good spot for clematis. It's too soon to give up on it yet, but I'm not optimistic.
Okay, it was time to get some sewing done. Yesterday's goal was to get the small Best Friends quilt to binding stage. At 26 x 21 inches, it was a reasonable expectation. It still needed to be sandwiched. This is the back fabric. It's some I picked up at a quilt shop in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I've used it several times, including making a couple of masks for Matthew's use during the pandemic.
And this quilt was small enough to sandwich in my sewing room. Now it's ready for quilting.
Usually I avoid quilting on fusible applique, but these pieces were too large. They needed something for functionality. I outlined all around them, and then quilted some straight lines in the lighter blue friend using a light blue thread. It's a little hard to see, so I've marked where the lines are.
For the other friend, I did a simple meander using a variegated thread.
I used this motif once before when I made a doll quilt for a friend's granddaughter. This one with kokopelli:
Okay and with that done, I decided to use one of the fancy stitches from my sewing machine in the turquoise stop border. This is stitch #423 on my Bernina 750QE machine.
And then I did a sort of looping motif in the outer border. Think of it as loops shaped like triangles, and you'll see what I mean:
And then it was ready to be squared up for binding.
The only thing left to do was to sew the binding on, and it was finished, except for the hand-sewing.
Here's how it looks from the back:
And that was the end of my sewing day. It was a good day. I'll set this aside with two other quilts that need their bindings hand-sewn, and I'll take this along on our camping trip. We're expecting some reasonable weather for at least two of the days we're there, but there should still be plenty of time for slow-stitching.
So let's just talk about the camping trip for a minute, shall we? I'm not taking my laptop, and so I'll be taking a few days off from blogging. I'll be back tomorrow morning for a farewell post and to share any sewing I do today, but then I'll be gone for about a week.
Now, dry your tears, because I'm leaving you with a giveaway to celebrate Smitty's 11th birthday on Tuesday. I'm giving away this six fat-quarter bundle of "Emma" by Sherri & Chelsi for Moda Fabrics. I love these springtime colors:

Hi Barbara,
I follow you on Facebook and thru my email acct. I love the friends quilt. Hope you have a good week camping . Will the kitties come with you? Have fun stitching the bindings also. Hugs!
Beautiful Spring fabrics! I'm looking forward to hearing all about the camping trip.
I follow you by email.
Happy Birthday to Smitty! Such a handsome guy. He could almost be a twin to my Vinny, whose 11th birthday is today. The resemblance between them is uncanny.
I hope your travels are safe and relaxing!
Follower on Facebook and Blogger.
Happy Birthday to Smitty! I enjoy reading about your kitties and seeing them in photos. Here in Calgary the snow is almost gone but it's a bit too soon for much new growth. The week ahead is forecast to be nice spring weather though. I was out doing some garden clean-up yesterday. I enjoy reading your blog regularly and follow you on Instagram. You get so much sewing and slow stitching done that it inspires me to keep making progress on my projects and change my tendency to procrastinate. Thank you for that. Enjoy your trip!
I'm home recovering from a knee replacement and your blog is inspiring me to sew every day. I think I'll do some quilting today. Meanwhile spring is a bit further along in these parts: the cherries are all in bloom and my daffodils and hyacinths are gorgeous! Thanks for the inspiration! Stay warm on your camping trip!
Good afternoon from Massachusetts. I click on your Blog every day to see how things are going on the West coast. Gibbs and Ziva love reading about Smitty and Sadie. Happy Birthday to Smitty.
Marthanne
Such perfect fabrics for Best Friends. Thanks for reminding me about Leah Day's designs; I need ideas for something I won't mess up for a certain quilt. I follow with Feedly.
Such pretty fabric choices…..I’d love to win! Not sewing much these days with a newborn but I look forward to having time again.
I look forward to reading your blog everyday. I also have 2 helper cats to help me quilt. Maybe sometimes not so helpful.
Happy Birthday, dear Smitty,
Happy Birthday to you!
Birthday Wishes from Auntiepatch
Our daffodils are blooming!!! We planted them a little last fall, the first planting at our new house, and the came up! I hope Smitty has a most excellent birthday as such a handsome and attentive man cat should. I follow your blog via Feedly…..and it’s one of those I read first…..love hearing the goings on at Three Cats Ranch. Hope your trip is safe and enjoyable!
Since we've had snow this week, not even my crocus have popped up yet. Hopefully soon though.
Happy Birthday Smitty! I follow you on Instagram and Facebook. Thank you for the opportunity to enter the giveaway. (shirparks@gmail.com)
Your friends quilt has always been a favorite - good to see it nearly a true-blue finish. If my FMQ this afternoon is any indication, I've forgotten everything I ever knew about machine quilting, sigh. It's been months since I've had any time to do anything other than walking foot stitching. Enjoy your camping trip, and here's to sunny skies and warm temps!
Hi. Your quilts look great! I think I follow you on FB. But I also have your blog on my frequent places page on IPad. We just drove south and enjoyed seeing everything go green on the way! I’ve always loved that part of the drive. There was lots of redbud and dogwoods to enjoy. Saved the worst of the rain for when my husband was driving! Enjoy your trip!
Have a great trip! I'm sure your two cats will enjoy it too. Our Birman Gemma is not at all happy this Easter, we had to put her into the local cattery as no animals are allowed at this venue, sadly, and we really wanted to attend this Easter Rally. The cattery owner has sent a message to say that Gemma is a "challenge" and won't allow any cuddles. Just as well it's only a four day cattery visit, I can hardly wait to collect her and take her home. You may remember that she recently share a 10 week caravan trip with us, so just lime your two, is a well traveled cat!
I read your blog almost every day via email and really enjoy seeing your machine quilting. You make it look so easy, and I know it really is rather complicated and requires a great deal of practice and imagination. I also like to know what's happening with the kitties since I no longer have any. At one time I had four but they all got old as did our dog. Now we travel or hope to travel more and decided pets are just too hard to leave for long. Anyway, thanks for all your honesty - and those great recipes!
I enjoy hearing about your cats. I have a cat named Brady that I got from the local animal shelter. Also, most everyday is no housework day, in my opinion.
Hi Barbara I am a new follower to your blog ,I love your quilt the colours are stunning, well done on your beautiful work. Your garden also looks lovely that clematis flower is gorgeous, hope you have a wonderful Easter 🤍🐰🤍
Thank you so much for brightening my days! I've followed you for several years now, never get tired, and love your cats, I'm a cat person too but don't have any right now. I'm also an avid quilter and use some of your ideas, thank you! Have a happy spring, and keep going!

Happy Birthday Smitty! I hope you and your people enjoy the camping trip - a fairly unique celebration of an April birthday, at least in my neck of the eastern Canadian woods!
I follow using Feedly.
Love seeing all the quilts you complete. What do you do with all of them? My computer crashed this week, thankfully I have an IPad. And I can keep up with you and your helpers.
Enjoy your camping. Vivian. Vivianhelena42@gmail.com
I follow you on Facebook and I have you linked in the sidebar on my blog. I check yours and Bonnie Hunter's blogs daily! I wish I could be as reliable as you!

Happy Birthday Smitty, hard to believe you are already 11 years old!
My daffodils and hyacinth are blooming, either the rabbits or deer are eating my tulip! Arrrggg.
Have a great camping trip.
I follow you by e mail.
Hi from the other side of the country…beautiful Western North Carolina! I enjoy your blog, especially comparing what you have blooming versus what’s blooming here. Our forsythia has long bloomed and we’ve had daffodils blooming since February 1. They’re just a few late bloomers still showing and the Dogwoods are beautiful currently. Have.a great trip!
I have a native tree flowering on the edge of my property, and chrysanthemums in a deep yellow just coming out. Otherwise, the canna lillies are still in flower, though on their last legs. I live in the southern hemisphere, so looking at autumnal flowers now. It’s been a funny summer, with lots of rain, so not as much gardening done as should have occurred. Maybe that’s why my main flowers are weeds.
Follow via email.
Just wanted to say have fun on your camping trip and I will miss your blogs. I love reading about you cats, your embroidery and of course your quilts. Again have fun and be safe.

Hi Barbara, happy Burthday Smitty. I follow via email and would love to win. I hope you have a wonderful trip especially since it has been postponed a couple of times due to weather. I hope you see lots of sunshine.
Diana
Hi, Barbara. I follow you with the Feedly RSS reader. There are many reasons I like your blog: Sadie and Smitty, your quilts and embroidery, your recipes for two, and most of all, your travel journals! My household is down to one person and one cat, and I have difficulty traveling, so I ride along with you and Mike. Dot
PS. Meant to add, I am a follower and your blog magically appears on my blog list each day for me to read and enjoy!
I follow you via facebook. I enjoy the varied topics, from cooking to quilting to gardening. Now I have to look up Leah Day's cogs motif. That looked very well executed.
Have a safe and fun camping trip. I never miss your blog. Thank you for this giveaway.
I read your blog every day thru my email. Your organization skills are amazing as are the number of quilts you create!
I hope your camping trip goes well!
A very happy birthday to Smitty on his 11th! And a wish to you and your DH for a safe and fun trip. The Best Friends quilt turned out so beautiful, and the pottery themed border is just perfect. Much enjoy your blog posts, enjoy the break, and come back rested and refreshed. :o) Melanie
Wowsa, lots of folks coming out of the wood work, eh? Amazing what free stuff will do. When we worked with March of Dimes planning for the CASI sanctioned chili cook-off, we only got volunteers to attend the meetings by promising food would be there. Moving on, happy birthday Smitty!! Can't believe he's so grown up already! He was just a little guy last week! Hmmm, what's growing here?? Well, my Easter lilies are about head high, and they have buds on em. A couple more weeks and I'll have a slew of beautiful flowers that smell so good. Gardenias have popped out with tons of buds still to come. Azaleas are history, so it's time to fertilize again. And trim. They got a little wild, you might say. Orchids are blooming, as well as my lone bromeliad. He really needs a new home, preferably in a tree, not a pot. We have residents in our 2 bluebird houses, but I think only one actually houses a bluebird. I think the other is a tufted titmouse. That one, for sure, has 2 tiny little eggs in a soft nest bowl. We would love some rain, if you could spare it, please. We are crrrrispy! Have a wonderful and safe trip!!!
love your blog. The quilts, your beautiful embroidery, your camping trips, and of course, your sweet furry friends! Thanks for the giveaway. Helen hrglover at hotmail dot com
Just enjoyed all the blooming things at Epcot’s Food & Flower Festival. Beautiful flowers and delicious food, can’t get much better than that! I look forward to the email notice I get when there’s a new post to enjoy. Have fun on your camping trip.
It's always a pleasure to open your emails to read all the 'goings on' at your place -- and drool over the latest projects you're working on! Those 2 beautiful fur babies must be a joy for you both...happy birthday, Smitty! Not much going on here but working out in the yard - getting things planted, and in the next few days finishing up the 100 foot plus french drain out back -- including the trench leading to the front. Have to get all this done before next Friday when I get knee surgery done (and will be out of commission for 6-8 weeks then). Thank you for the giveaway and most especially, your lovely posts that I always look forward to! Deb E mdenders@msn.com
Nothing blooming yet outside here, but i do have a big houseplant with 3 large flowers. That’s a first for me.
Your blog is one I consistently follow. I love hearing the antics of Smitty and Sadie. You and your hubby have the best adventures Your quilts are lovely. Not quite sure how you manage to cram so much quilting into a day though but glad we get to hear all about it. Happy Birthday, Smitty! You are a great sewing cat.
Your Friends quilt turned out beautifully! The quilting looks really good. Glad you've finally got some signs of spring in the yard. The redbuds are blooming here, so spring is definitely here. Hope you have a great trip and that the good weather holds for the week.
Happy camping. Our daffodils are in full bloom here in IN close to Indianapolis.
I follow you on email.
Happy Easter and be safe on trip.
Hello, Barb! I follow through my email account and love your daily (mostly) posts and all the adventures you and the cats have.
The snow has only just melted here, so the garden has nothing to show, but I do see some tiny green buds on the lilacs!
Happy Birthday Smitty - and a scratch behind the ears for Sadie so she is not left out!
Enjoy your camping trip!
Just in case, my email address is: conniecollins78@gmail.com
Happy Birthday to be, Smitty. We are a few weeks away from spring up here on the Canadian prairies, although the weatherman says warm days next week.. I will believe it when I see it. We are really craving the bright, clean spring colours. Thanks!!
Good morning and Happy Easter! Happy Birthday to Smitty! I love seeing you two kitties in my email every day. Have a fun and safe camping trip.
We will be moving to a new house in about a month- we've lived in our current house for 35 years- I'm excited and terrified! We have a LOT of stuff!
Happy birthday Smitty and happy spring to you. I live north of you and our daffodils are out and starting to droop (sad for me to see). I like the built in stitch you used in the border of your quilt.
Happy Birthday to Smitty! We still have a lot of unmelted snow still piled up our yard here in Newfoundland. We’re hoping for more spring like weather later this week. I have your page bookmarked and I try to check in every day. Your posts are so entertaining! Enjoy your trip!
Enjoy this long awaited camping trip.
Here in interior British Columbia I am just seeing daffodil leaves poking through the still chilly soil. ... but spring is coming!
Barbara. Thanks so much for your daily blog. It’s the first one I look for. Have a lovely and enjoyable mini vacation-I’m sure the kitties are looking forward to it as much as you and Mike are. The pink and white trees are in full bloom in New Mexico. Beautiful!
I totally enjoy reading your posts, but especially your humor& your kitties.
enjoy your camping trip-finally to happen.
I have some spring flowers blooming, but here in KY the thing I am enjoying most is the trees that are blooming all over. So many lovely colors.
I find your posts inspiring and entertaining and a giveaway is an extra bonus. Thanks!
I follow your blog on my blogger dashboard/GFC as I have for years, despite a number of times when GFC was supposedly being eliminated. I guess I'm lucky to still be here!
Smitty is 11! Wow, Happy Birthday Smitty! The kitties look like they enjoyed the outdoors. Enjoy your camping trip. Best friends is beautiful. I follow you on Facebook and by e-mail. You are also part of the blog list on my own blog. Thanks for the giveaway.
Hard to believe that Smitty is 11. He certainly hides his age well.
I hope you have lots of hand work to do cause it looks like we are in for a wet week ahead. My son is hoping for some dry time on Thursday and Friday to be able to,do some outside work on his rental in Netarts.
I'm still waiting for my clematis to show her pretty face-- zone 8A so she should have shown me something by now. I'm thinking our crazy winter did her in. I follow thru FollowIt- found that when Bloglovin started letting me down
Happy Birthday to Smitty and thanks for the great giveaway! I follow you on Instagram. I hope you have a great camping trip and I look forward to hearing about all of your adventures.
I am a couple of days late on wishing Smitty a great birthday…hope it was a good one, Smitty!! Our Cosmo will be eight years old in July….the time just flies by, doesn’t it?!
I pull up your blog post every day and read it while I eat my lunch… I so enjoy following all of your projects, seeing all of your beautiful pictures of every blooming thing, and hearing about all the things you see and do on your travels. I aLeo enjoy the recipes you share with us…and hearing about kitty escapades as well…chin rubs to both of them!!
I hope you are having a great trip!
Safe travels!

I follow via email. We have had nice weather the last couple of days. I have spent some time outdoors cleaning out some of the flower garden beds. The daffodils are blooming and are so pretty. We also have some white and purple star flowers blooming. The hyacinths are beginning to come out and the tulips are sending up leaves. Have a great trip.
Reading your daily goings on is one thing I look forward to every morning. Thank you for sharing your beautiful quilts and tips. Since there are just 2 of us in the house now I love your recipes and canning info.
Bless your heart for being a blessing to so many
Glad that your plants seem to have survived all that miserable white stuff. In my experience clematis seems to be finicky about where it wants to be so perhaps that particular spot isn't what it likes.
You're doing a wonderful job quilting 'Best Friends' - I had forgotten that the hair was loose.
I follow you via my Inoreader feed.
Smitty!! Happy Birthday today on your special birthday. today IS the 11th, and its your 11th birthday. How special is that!
hope you get lots of goodies!
What a good looking mancat you have become.
The Best Friends quilt is absolutely gorgeous. I love everything about it. If only I weren't so lazy, you could absolutely inspire me.
Hi Barb! Been a long time follower by a bookmarked page on my phone and Instagram. Cough, I used to read your update every day at work but now that I'm in the land of retirement it's every few days and then I have a Barb Binge. Happy Birthday Smitty, you handsome feline!
Wow, Smitty is 11 years old? Wow! It surely doesn't feel that long ago, but then again, I remember Gracie.
I'm happy to hear that your plants appear to have escaped all of that awful white gunk. My observations indicate that clematis is picky about where it wants to be, so possibly that particular location isn't what it prefers.
You're quilting 'Best Friends' beautifully, by the way. The hair was loose, which I had forgotten.

I hope you have fun reading all these comments! :) I follow your blog via an rss aggregator app called Leaf on my iMac. I enjoy watching you work your way through oodles of lovely quilts. ;)
Happy birthday to His Honor!
