A Little Progress

Good Sunday morning, my friends. I could be wrong, but I believe we had a full dry day yesterday. Absolutely amazing. It wasn't warm, mind you. Still, a day without rain was a welcome relief from the interminable gloom. Our weatherman reported yesterday that we would reach 70° by Thursday, and that it had been 184 days since we'd seen temperatures above 70°. So, that's saying something.

We went outside with the kitties for a while yesterday afternoon. Finally, the star magnolia is blooming. It rained hard overnight, but it doesn't appear any worse for wear this morning.

Walking around, I noticed some other flowers are coming on. The Andromeda is developing buds. It will be a while before they're in full bloom. Eventually, it will gain some bright red foliage. It's very pretty when its flowers are fully mature.

Even the Daphne is doing well. I can see flower petals. The poor thing was inundated by some extremely cold temperatures earlier this past winter. I worried it was done for. Mae thought it would be okay (this was a gift from her), and she was right. When it blooms the flowers are so fragrant, we can smell them from far away.

Also, I noticed more shoots on the Red Cardinal clematis. I'm very happy it survived this cold winter. If it can make it through such a long cold spell, it is probably happy right where it is. And is that a flower bud I see?

Just around the corner to the left, the purple clematis is developing flowers. This will be a mass of blooms soon. This clematis has been here longer than we have. Every year it puts on quite a show.

Back in December, I ordered some tomato starts from a grower just south of us. These are grafted tomatoes, and I'm told they'll bear more fruit than "regular" tomatoes. We'll see. There are nine sauce tomatoes here and one slicer. They were shipped and delivered from the grower in the same day. The packing job they did was amazing. I don't think a single leaf was damaged in transit. It's too cold to put them out in the greenhouse just yet, but I'm hoping to get them out there by next weekend.

As for sewing stuff, I've stitched the right side of my piece from bottom to top and moved my hoop to the left.

From there, I made five more blocks for the Painted Ladies quilt. The one on the right is not sewn together. It will be a partial for the third vertical row.

With those finished, I couldn't think of a good reason not to start sewing the vertical rows together. Sadie gave her purrmission.

Smitty was busy in his office in HR (He Rests), and so he let Sadie make this decision without his input.

With just two rows done, it makes a skinny quilt, but here it is. I wondered how those diagonal streets were going to look. It appears to be working.

For today's sewing, I'll get busy making two more blocks for the Whimsical Flower Garden. These usually take a couple of days. Here are the blocks I have for this quilt so far. I love all the color.

That will keep me busy for a few days. There isn't much more on today's agenda, and so I should have plenty of time for sewing. What's on tap for your Sunday?

It's difficult to think anything but pleasant thoughts while eating a homegrown tomato. ~ Lewis Grizzard

I've never seen a magnolia up close and I really wish I could see yours in person.
Your tomato plants look a lot healthier than the ones Resident Chef planted from seed. Hopefully his will grow!
Your Whimsical Garden makes me smile every time you show it. There's just something happy about all the colour.

A magnolia in bloom is the most elegant of trees!

Wow! You certainly live in cold country! Love your photo your star magnolia bloom. When I was going through chemo, I would take walks in my neighborhood. One of the homes has a beautiful magnolia tree – and that tree was my goal every day. Thank you for the sweet memory!
Love your embroidery stitching. Beautiful Whimsical Flower Garden blocks!

We are going to be stuck in the high 50s and low 60s this week. I would like some 70s for sure. I can just imagine how tedious it is to match those seams to make thoses streets look so straight. Those painted ladies are pretty. I love your appliqued blocks. I have to feed my andromeda. One is not looking so good.

I think we are getting your wet weather this week. It will be dry today but with rain moving in and staying most of the week. Your Painted Ladies are looking good. Looking forward to all the blooming things in your yard. We've about seen the end of the spring blooms here.
