Hands in the Cookie Jar

There wasn't much time for anything yesterday. The entire morning and part of the afternoon was spent in the kitchen preparing food for Erik and Mike. They're going to have a good time at the race, and goodness knows, they won't go hungry. Before anything could happen, though, I took the first stitches on the newest Pieces of the Past section:

I stitched a little more later in the day while we watched the news. There wasn't much time in the morning. I needed to get busy baking the Jumbo Breakfast Cookies. This is only the second time I've made these, but I really like them. Both times they've been a little under baked, however. I need to make a note in my recipe to give them a little more time. They're very tasty, despite being a little soft. They have the nicest chewy texture.

For the guys, they'll be one alternative to Clif bars as they ride around the track. The second cookie is my old standby, and frankly, the only cookie recipe you'll ever need. These are Chocolate-Chunk Oatmeal Cookies with Pecans and Dried Cherries. There's something for every cookie lover in these cookies.

At Christmas I switch out the dried cherries for dried cranberries and white chocolate for the bittersweet chocolate. They're a family favorite...and they're my favorite too.

After that I tried a new coleslaw recipe. One of my friends posted this recipe for a copycat KFC Coleslaw concoction. I didn't take a picture of mine, but here's the photo from the website:

It's been a very long time since I've had KFC Coleslaw, but I've always loved it. This is a good copycat, and very easy to make. For sure it'll become my go-to coleslaw mixture.

After that, there was just a meat marinade to make and then pack up the rest of the food. Finally, around 2:00 p.m. I was able to get off my feet and start stitching the binding on the Paintbox Pizzazz quilt. Here's a tip: a journey of 284 inches is best made with a friend.

It took me a little time to clip my way around. Fairly soon after the stitching started, I'd turned the first corner.

Before I finished for the day, I'd turned the second corner. There is still a long way to go. I'm liking that striped binding though.

Today a guy is going to show up to see the basement...finally. I don't know if he'll actually do some work today, or if he's just here to see what's involved. In all of this, the bright spot has been taking the guest room bed apart and rediscovering one of Gracie's favorite toys...a little pink fringe ball. Sadie has taken it over now. We hear her playing with it and chattering away at it. She tells it that it's nothing personal...she's a cat, and she has to kill things.

Okay, so Erik will be here soon, and I need to make breakfast. After that, I imagine it would be good to shower and get dressed before the "basement guy" shows up. One wonders if he will be green with slime hanging from his body. It's what every fashionable "basement guy" is wearing this season. When he and I are finished with whatever we're going to be doing this morning, I'll get back to my quilt binding. If there's time today, I might sew together another small quilt top. And even if I'm sharing the house with "basement guy," I still mostly have the house to myself for the next week. The mind reels with possibilities.

Think what a better world it would be if we all, the whole world, had cookies and milk about three o'clock every afternoon and then lay down on our blankets for a nap. ~ Barbara Jordan

I opened my email from Pineapple Fabrics this morning. They have Spirit cat buttons (qty) 6 on sale. I couldn't help thinking that these were made with you in mind. Have a great day! Violet

Thank you for the links to the recipes. I am glad I am not the only one to find long past cats toys when you think you had found them all. My later cats would have nothing to do with them though. Enjoy your "single" week.

A striped binding is just the best! I do miss having a warm and heavy cat laying in my lap while I do binding. Sammy used to do exactly that.

Hope "Basement Guy" fixes the problem for you quickly!!

Nice to have a new Pieces of the Past block hooped up to go for your week alone...and you should be able to get a lot of sewing time in, too;)))

What a lot of food prep - I hope the boys appreciate all that you've done for them! We had a kitty, Lexie, who liked to talk to some of her mice. We called them "naughty mice" because she yelled at them as she tossed them up and down the stairs. But now I wonder if maybe she, too, was apologizing for her behavior? She was a dilute tortie and otherwise a very polite little lady. Hmmm... Enjoy your week. My hubby has a week-long trip planned a few months out, but I am already looking forward to it. The possibilities are endless, but my favorite is that no one is there to judge when I just decide it's a pajama day!

Thanks for the cookie recipe….it sounds delicious!!
Cosmo occasionally talks to his toys also….it seems his favorite time for toy playing is while we are asleep. The toys frequently move locations overnight! His favorite is a hand-me-down from a previous kitty..it looks like a piece of cake with a candle on top. That candle makes a good handle while he is racing through the house with it… it is also the toy that he tosses in the air, and bats around quite vigorously…..it is amazing how far he can hit it….
Many years ago, we had a sweet little gray and white kitty named Katie. We never could get her to play with toys. We would get them out for her to play with, and she would immediately take them back to the basket where we kept them! Apparently she didn’t like them strewn about! Cosmo, on the other hand, is the exact opposite. He loves digging through the basket, finding just the one he wants, and pulling it out to play. Sometimes he is so vigorous in his search for whichever toy he is looking for, that the area around the basket looks like a bomb went off!!

Yummy recipes and I'm sure the guys will enjoy all your food prep for their road trip fun adventure. I have mixed feelings about you being home alone with the basement guy. Please tell Smitty and Sadie to keep all ears and eyes on alert as their job is to watch and protect you while Mike is away. And Smitty has a really good scary look he should show to Basement Guy as soon as he walks in to let him know who is boss.

Thank you for your yummy recipes! I'm going to jot down the cookie recipes as soon as I get our new printer hooked up. And right now I'm making caramelized onions to go in French onion soup stuffed peppers. Yum!

The cookies look SOOOO good! Methinks your guys are going to be very well fed on their trip. As for KFC coleslaw - it's the only thing I love at KFC. Never have been a fan of their chicken because it's far too salty for my taste.
