Trashy Quilt in a Day

When I wrote yesterday's post, it looked as though it would be a warmer day. Then, the wind came up again, and it was pretty cold for most of the day. It was a good day to stay inside and sew...which is exactly what I did. First, I went to work on the day's inchy:

That one was pretty simple.

While I was stitching that, a dove was bothering the kitties. It was bad enough to be mocked by hummingbirds, and then this bird showed up. It's enough to drive a cat wild.

When I was finished with my slow stitching, I went to work making the trashy hearts on the day's agenda. I laid out the first one as I had the day before...

But as I laid it out, it seemed as if something wasn't quite right. My friend, Dorothy, has graciously given me permission to show the hearts she posted that inspired me to make this quilt. If you look closely at the image below, you can see that the 2nd and 3rd row from the top are identical. And my block left out one of those rows.

And the problem with this...for me...was that if I included the missing row, then I wouldn't have enough HST's to make four blocks. Smitty gave me a stern look for this oversight in my planning.

Okay, but after some gnashing of teeth, I decided I could still make heart-like hearts even with the way I'd laid them out, and so I went on ahead with my original plan.

The first block took way longer than it should have. I sewed the HST's together with them oriented improperly. I sewed rows together upside down. And, as you might guess, I ran out of bobbin thread. Of course I did. Finally, I had the first one finished.

And then, I made three more in approximately the time it took to make the first one.

There were still about a half dozen left over. I sewed a few of them together to make a center cornerstone.

From there, I sewed a white border around all of them.

I debated whether to use red or white for the center, and then decided there was enough white already.

The kitties obviously thought I should have used white, but they are cats...not quilters. They sometimes get confused about that.

And then, I added a border to the outside, and my trashy quilt top was finished. I'm calling this quilt "Broken Hearts." It ends up at 30 x 32 inches.

Quilting and binding will have to wait until I get home. There's enough of that border fabric left to make a quilt back, but I probably have some fabrics at home I could use too. For now, It'll get put on the stack of quilts for quilting.

This morning, we witnessed a rare moment of unity. The kitties sat face to face on their hammocks. No snarling, and no hissing.

Okay, so I picked a card for a photography scavenger hunt yesterday, but I didn't take a single picture.

I'll try to get out today if the weather permits. I could do this one inside the RV too. Also, the next inchy is posted. This one contains the dreaded cast-on stitch. That's where I'm headed next. There will probably be swearing involved. If that bothers you, you might want to cover your ears for the next half hour or so. I'll show it to you when I post tomorrow.

Your trashy hearts look so pretty together with that central square...nice work getting them all oriented correctly--that can certainly be troublesome...
Hope your weather gets better...
I got my Covid Test before the freezing rain hit us--so now awaiting results...

OK, so intuition told me that I should wait until lunchtime to read your post, so counting on the swearing session being over and calm reigning at the Traveling Three Cats Ranch once again. The red background fabric is perfect for your hst hearts. Enjoy your warm weather - at least warmer and greener than ours is at the moment!

Your trashy hearts look lovely, worth all the sewing and unsewing to get the first one just right.

Your hearts have an abstract look to them. Just the essential number of blocks included to have the eye conclude that is a heart elongated.

Definitely the weather to wear an under layer to keep warm. The heat must be on and able to create a cozy home. The wind whipped through my car and created a chill as if I had left some windows open. I did not know if an RV would have the same issue. You are getting more sewing done than expected, it seems.

You made quick work of those trashy hearts! Enjoy your slow stitching this morning. Looking forward to seeing what you find on your next photo safari.

I must admit I prefer your version of the hearts to the original. They're both nice, but there's something about yours that appeals. And that is about as technical as I can get!
