Blustery Day

The morning started out easy-going enough. We had plans to walk from the RV park into the historic part of Boulder City. We planned lunch at Boulder Dam Brewing Company, a place with good food and a nice outdoor seating area. It's a tradition for us to have at least one meal there when we're visiting Boulder City. So we drank our morning coffee. Sadie sat in my lap helping me with my slow stitching. Smitty had lap envy.

Later, he joined us on the veranda while we sat outside in the morning sunshine.

It wasn't long before the wind came up. With us just skirting the cold weather east of us, the pressure dropped rapidly here, bringing strong winds in the 20 mph range with gusts into the 30 mph range. It had our camper rocking, and we were both very glad it was still seated in the bed of the truck for extra weight. It blew like that the whole live-long day. Everyone, including us, hunkered down and waited it out. By late morning, the sky was orange with blowing dust. We still thought we could brave the wind and have lunch in town. By noon, we'd changed our minds. I'm really glad we did because it would have been miserable both coming and going, and it's unlikely their outdoor seating area would have been in use.

Okay, so apparently this happens fairly frequently in Boulder City. We've never experienced it like this before, and so it comes as something of a surprise. With so much time just sitting inside, there was plenty of time for slow stitching. I finished up the 9th of Grandma's Thimbles.

Just three to go. Think I'll get them finished before we reach home on Saturday?

It seemed like a good day for a skillet cookie, and so I baked one of those for our dessert last night and tonight.

Later in the day, Sadie amused herself by stalking birds through the window. She takes this activity very seriously.

As you can see, a day spent inside is pretty lackluster. We're hoping for a better day of weather ahead. The wind seems to be dying down. It rained quite a bit last night, and if the forecast is to be believed, we should have sunshine starting around 11:00 a.m. Maybe we'll walk into town today, but nothing is certain for sure as I'm writing this.

Okay, so the rest of our journey will be driving, driving, driving, and I'm planning to take a break from blogging until we get home. Mike and I were discussing these "vacations" of ours. Since we're retired, they don't really feel like "vacations." Instead, we're referring to them as "road trips." Having a few days here in Boulder City feels as if we're getting a little vacation from our road trip ahead of making the long drive home, driving long distances for several days running. As for blogging, it starts getting hard to fill a page when we're just sitting still, even if we're sitting still rolling down the road. So look for me on Saturday or Sunday. I'll be back then.

But here's the rub: Our roofing project is set to start on Monday, October 18th. Where we live, we have wireless internet with an antenna on our roof pointed at our service provider across the valley. That will be disconnected for a short time while the new roof is being installed. After that, the internet service provider will have to reinstall the antenna and get it positioned in the right direction. In the meantime, I can probably use my cell phone hot spot, as I do when we're traveling, but our cell signal isn't great where we live. (It's the downside of living in a rural area.) So, I don't know whether I'll be able to blog once the roofing project begins, or how long our internet will be down. I'm thinking less than a week, but that's only a guess. Fingers crossed it's a short outage, and fingers crossed my cell phone hot spot can take over. We'll all find out together.

Thanks again to all who have followed and left comments. Even if you didn't comment while we were traveling, it was good having you along. We're all looking forward to being home and settling back into our regular routines. I know the kitties are Jonesing for some of that Oregon grass. For now, I'm signing off. I'll be back again in a few days.

Wow, a lot going on. I'm glad you guys have more time in Boulder City and I hope today and the rest of your trip is windless and good weather, where you can walk to town and eat outside if you wish. A rocky night in the camper was probably not super fun, but good to know you are all safe. Nature is so amazing. I think she tries to remind us not to take beautiful good weather days for granted. Your thimbles are so beautiful. How exciting that your new roof is going to be installed shortly after you return home. It is going to look fantastic. I look forward to when the install is finished, you have internet and can share pictures. In the meantime, enjoy the last of your road trip as you head back to the barn.

Thank you for the heads up about the probable lack of blog posting.
Good luck on getting everything rewired and working again on the internet.

Sorry about the missed lunch but sounds like it was a good plan to hunker down. Safe travels the rest of the way home and for letting us know you might be MIA for a few days. Hope all goes well with the roof!

I have so enjoyed being a tag-a-long on this trip, and have learned a lot. Thank you for taking us all with you. Have a safe trip home. Hope the new roof and re-alignment of internet service goes smoothly. We had frost on house tops and cars this morning in W WA

I love reading all your blogs. I enjoy all of the blogs of your travels, as that is the only way my husband and I do any traveling. The extent of our travels are to doctor's appointments and grocery shopping and other errands.

We used to say we needed a vacation from our vacation. Glad the wind died down and no damage was incurred. Thimbles look great and I think you will finish them by the time you get home. Prayers for an uneventful and safe trip home.

Safe travels home and I will certainly miss your posts until everything is back to normal again. I am like the other poster and don't travel any more and enjoy your telling us about your adventures.

It has been fun following your adventures from the comfort of my home. I'm not a good traveler so this is the best way for me to see fantastic sights.

I know I'm not the only one who has enjoyed this awe-inspiring and informative trip. I hope the travel home is uneventful and the roof project moves along quickly. At least you'll be able to get settled back in at home without distractions like responding to comments and writing blog posts. And we who doubted that the thimbles project would be enough for this trip are humbled. We've been enjoying unseasonably warm weather for more than a week, but it comes to an end tomorrow. Unfortunately I've not been able to take advantage of the good weather to button up the gardens as my husband fell and has a ruptured quadricep tendon. Surgeon told us repair would be done next week, but, alas his scheduler said it wouldn't be until Nov 11. It's going to be a very long fall and winter again this year, stuck at home. Take care. We'll be waiting for your next post.
