Did that "giveaway" get your attention? Now, I know y'all will be tempted to scroll on by my morning blatherings, but then you'll be missing out on the news about the biggest zucchini ever grown in world history since the beginning of time. Despite my near daily harvest of the vegetables, one zucchini managed to hide long enough to grow to gargantuan proportions. Feast your eyes (and if you're really, really, really a fan of zucchini, this will appear as an actual "feast" to you):
Yeah, I was feeling pretty smug about harvesting all the zucchini before it could grow so big, but then I noticed this monumentally mammoth specimen and had to declare myself an unworthy adversary of zucchini zealotry. (Bows head in disgrace.) And, goodness knows, I'm making assumptions here because for all I know, there's another one out there doing the same thing. Well. This one is going to get shredded and divided up into portions for doing other things. I've already mentioned zucchini bread, and zucchini fritters aren't half bad either. Vee haf our vays with zucchini that stray from the path of righteousness. (Shakes fist at open window.) Zucchini, you have not defeated me yet!
I spent nearly the whole day in the kitchen yesterday, but most all the food for our camping trip is prepared. It just needs assembly or heating, and dinner (or breakfast) is served. Lunch is going to be sandwiches, and we'll make those when we eat them. The good news about all this cooking is that the food is mostly packed, and that is always the biggest part of preparing for these short trips. After a day on my feet, I was a tired pup. Toward the end of the day, the kitties had the right idea, scoping out the one little patch of sunlight and taking up their serious napping purrsitions.
Please don't tell Smitty I neglected to get his whole handsome body in that image. He gets peevish about things like that, and then he has to jump on Sadie. (She's the only purrson in the house smaller than he is.)
In the "Ways with Zucchini" category, I made this dish for dinner. It's so tasty and easy. I got the recipe as a part of our diet, and I've made it before. It was a fresh-flavored and light way to finish off a busy day. This is Tortellini Salad with Zucchini and Peas.
The zucchini is sliced into ribbons using a vegetable peeler. My zucchini were on the small side, but I just peeled them until they were too flimsy to peel any more. The ribbons come off already soft, but then they're heated for just a minute or so before being added to the rest of the salad. The salad is served a little warmer than room temperature.
But I know...you really just want to hear about the giveaway, don't you? Okay, so here's the story. I'm happy to say that this giveaway is sponsored by The Sewing Circle quilt shop in Fort Collins, Colorado. You might recall I had so much fun quilting the Dream Big panel that I went in search of another. I found this Dream Big Leaf. It came in different colors, and I wanted the color identified as "December." I found it, ordered it, and it arrived last week.
But then...strangely...another one showed up. Checking my accounts, I'd only paid for one. And so I contacted Melissa at The Sewing Circle and offered to send it back, but then I proposed giving it away to one of you if Melissa would agree to that. And she did! Thanks Melissa! Isn't this a pretty panel?
Okay, so here's what you need to do to win it.

One's own flowers and some of one's own vegetables make acceptable, free, self-congratulatory gifts when visiting friends, though giving zucchini - or leaving it on the doorstep, ringing the bell, and running - is a social faux pas. ~ Barbara Holland
For the first time in 26 years, the deer have won my vegetable garden. One Patti Pan squash is all that has survived so far. Next year I will have to put up fences, sigh. - Marthanne
I'm going to be in Fort Collins for a wedding in October and will be sure to check out the quilt shop. While reading about your "wayward" zucchini I thought you were going to have us guess at the weight. Enjoy your trip. Teri

When I grew zucchini in the garden, I'd only plant 1 hill, I'm just not into zucchini that much. One of the advantages of having my own chickens is they LOVE giant zucchini. I smash it and leave them to it. They are happy girls. Have a great camper trip, happy stitching!
I will have to get back to my Dream Big panel sitting on the long arm. I think it has been about a week since I worked on it last.
Have a fun and safe trip!
I signed up at The Sewing Circle. I just might have to buy that 3-1/2" wide Creative Grids ruler they have.
I do believe I have to make the Tortellini zucchini salad. Looks and sounds good. I really enjoy your blog and reading all the Kitty news.

And there I thought you were giving away your prize-winning zucchini gigantium- yeah I know that probably wasn't a real word til 30 seconds ago!
Just visited and signed up for the newsletter. Enjoy your trip!
I've enjoyed "watching" your progress as you've quilted your panel. So lovely! We gave up growing zucchini, but the cucumbers are thriving.
And here I thought I might have a shot at winning that zucchini! How do you ready the shred for freezing? I drain and drain but it still tends to end up being too wet when all is said and done, and it shrinks in the freezer. I am working on a simple 'starburst' quilt, after cutting the HSTs wrong (imagine) the first time. It is a 'sister' quilt to the one I made a month or so ago and the two similar products are intended for two of the grands. I am amazed that I messed up the first time around since I thought I could do this pattern in my sleep by now. Have a good time on your trip -- we are hoping for weekend away, and fear that the travel window is closing too quickly as a result of the unvaccinated petri dish that surrounds us all.
I signed up for the newsletter; I do love seeing what different shops come up with.
Ummmmm- you think THAT zucchini is large? We bought three at the market on the weekend that would put that one to shame. Just sayin'! Big is beautiful, don'cha know.
And, yes please, I will throw my name in the proverbial hat for a chance to win that beautiful piece of inspiration fabric. Normally I'd say leave me out of it because of the postage costs but this time I'm making an exception. How lovely of the Sewing Circle and Melissa for making it possible.
How nice of The Sewing Circle to let you keep the second panel for a giveaway!
I signed up for The Sewing Circle's newsletter. Thank you for the link.
I'm a bit odd in that I go looking for the giant zucchinis. I shred and freeze them, and use them as a thickener for salsa and spaghetti sauce. This started as a way to sneak an extra veggie or two into my kids/husband, but in 15+ years, no one has ever noticed! The shredded zucchini appears to disappear (ha!), but thickens the various mixtures appreciably. And maybe adds a vitamin or two.
Enjoy your trip! Our weather in Nova Scotia, Canada has been unusually cool & damp this year, with a few hot & humid days. I have yet to visit the beach, even though one is never more than 40 miles from the ocean anywhere in the province!
I have to say that I really enjoyed watching your progress on the quilting of the Big Dream panel and can't wait until you work on your new one even though I know it will be awhile. Have fun at the beach.
I signed up for The Sewing Circle newsletter.
Please count me OUT of the giveaway, but I had to comment about the zucchini! My mom gave me one nearly that size a week ago and I made two loaves of zucchini bread from it, much to the happiness of my cowowkers. (Except that ONE GUY who commented it wasn't banana bread...) Apparently hers get away from her, too! I just know better than to grow them, as someone is likely to be giving them away if I really want one! I made a recipe you shared a week ago (or so?) for pasta with spinach and tomatoes and kalamata olives. Except when making salads ahead, I forgot I needed some of the spinach, so it was in salads...so a little less green in mine, but the olives gave it a nice zing and I'm enjoying it while the hubby is off fishing for the week and not directing my cooking adventures towards processed, high-sodium, meat-forward dishes! I might have to see about that tortellini salad next...
That is one massive zucchini! You are doing a great job in the garden and with your flowers. Have a great time at the beach.
Signed up for the newsletter. Very interesting fabrics. Will go back to buy a few. Thanks your sharing.
Love the free motion quilting on the dream big panel. Great job!!!
We have had some zucchini get away from us this year. I have had a couple of big ones. What has really gone to town are the cucumbers. We finally put it up on a wire frame to climb because we kept finding bigger ones that we what for pickles. I have already made several jars of refrigerator pickles and will probably need to actually can some. One grew into the zucchini plant and imitated the zucchini in size. That one is going to go to my daughter for her chickens. We have discovered that they really like cucumbers. We only planted one pot of each of the zucchini and cucumbers but you would think we had an entire field the number we have already harvested. We had planted two winter squash we thought they were both Acorn but one has turned out to be some summer squash we have never seen before. They are also attempting world domination.
I also signed up for the newsletter cause it is just what I need another place to tempt me with fabric.
You are ready to roll! I hope you enjoy a lovely trip - are the kitties going along? I'll watch someone else have fun with that panel - I have so much free motion angst it would likely never get done. It sure is a beauty, though!
We have had rain as needed this summer and vegetable gardens are very productive. Thanks for the opportunity to enter the giveaway. Have read your blog and followed for years. (shirparks@gmail.com)
Oooh what a gorgeous panel--love those colors.
Today I began sewing a Fall strip pieced and then die cut project...was able to actually sit and sew for 15 minutes--YAY!!
Hope your trip is wonderful hugs, Julierose
I love that giant zucchini! I stuff the big ones like stuffed peppers! Thank you for the giveaway fun and enjoy your trip!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching your Dream fmq project come together. I'm a bit envious of your trip to the coast just as we are heading into another heat wave. You're very clever! I will work on my memory quilts as the high temps will keep me out of the garden for the rest of the week. I found a big zucchini last week and made Smitten Kitchen's zucchini butter spaghetti, I found the recipe did not require all of the olive oil and I completely omitted the butter. Very good!
Just a quick comment to say I've enjoyed your writing for several years...all of it; the quilting, the kitties, the gardening, the cooking, the camping, the family. Yours is the only blog I consistently read and admire. Thank you for all the fun! And I don't know if I'm "no reply" or not.
Barbara, I just love reading your blog! Your daily writing inspired me when I first started blogging in 2011--and I'm so cheered by the fact that you are still at it, even as I mostly switched over to Instagram for sharing my makes and such.
I've been in a sewing funk for a few months, and I think it started when I "forced" myself to work on a couple UFOs before jumping into the Norah Quilt sewalong. I rebelled against my self-imposed rules...ugh.
That is a good size zucchini, but I've seen some that look like real fat torpedoes, so I don't think you have a record setter. Have a good time at the beach. You can leave me out of the drawing.
Pat
Have a fun trip and Safe Journey. Can’t wait to see the new panel finished.
Love the panel! Have a good trip!
Those pesky zucchini. They get to the large stage in a blink of an eye. Love to hear your news each day.
Have a great trip. The zucchini will be waiting and growing while, you are away.
I love seeing pictures of your camping trips. I miss camping. I enjoy pictures or your sweet cats and flowers as much as your sewing
Been reading all your posts thru e-mail where I can't respond so finally went looking into my flimsy blogger read list. Love the work on the large flower and you now have mastery to make the holiday one shine next. Enjoy your trip.
Who doesn't like a giveaway! I'm working on getting my UFO pile...before cutting into new fabric!
Have a great time at the beach!
I've always loved good zuchinnni fresh from the garden. For some reason, if I purchase them...I'm not all that excited about cooking it ;(
I've checked out the shop and signed up for their newsletter. It's nice to see of shops all around since I travel so much for my work. I like knowing what services are provided if I head that direction for my next job.
I really enjoy your blog!
I've not been tempted to do a flower panel till I saw your December one, I love it!!
I checked out their website and signed up for their newsletter, would love to visit in person some day.
Marilyn
I have a fall big leaf, but I also really like the silver, wintery version, too!
I've actually joined the National Sewing Circle program for 1 year.
What a huge zucchini! The salad looks wonderful - I saved that for a day when my husband wants a 'do it yourself' day for dinner. The quilt panel is gorgeous....I can see that with pieced blocks around it, a border and hand quilting the outlines of the flower. Thanks for the giveaway and the opportunity to win! Deb E mdenders@msn.com
Signed up for the Sewing Circle newsletter -- ideas come from everywhere, and I picked up one or two just browsing there! Thanks again Deb E mdenders@msn.com
That is a great panel with lines that are easy to follow. I'd need that, but not you. It is easy for many garden veggies to get ahead of you. Love your pasta salad idea. Enjoy your time away.
I will just repeat what I've said before, you are such an entertaining writer, you are the only one I follow and read whenever I can. If I'm too busy, I just save my email and get back to it when I can! I do not know how you get all you do done, it amazes me! Have fun on your road trip.! Kathy
This is an awesome giveaway, Barbara. I am just finishing my Xmas in July project (I know, technically it is August, but, at least it isn't january...haha). This panel would fit in so nicely with my other Xmas projects. Sending my hello's to Smittie and Sadie and, of course the resident Engineer and especially to you from Sask., Canada. I love the way your mind works!!
Enjoy your trip! Can’t wait to see your finished projects when you get home!
I am working on do 100 of practicing free motion designs...using paper and pencil.
I hope you have a great time at the beach! Is there a reason besides volume that people don't like their zucchini to get big? It seems to me that having lots of zucchini would be a good thing!
I get the Sewing Circle newsletter.
It is a beautiful panel. Would be fun to have. You do have some good recipes.behjoy you blog.
I really thought your Giveaway was going to be zucchini! LOL! That recipe looks yummy!
Enjoy your blog and love the panel. Thank you for the giveaway.
LOL I HAVE been tempted to leave zucchini on the doorstep and run.....and this year, like you, my best efforts to pick early and often have resulted in several "baseball bats." I think I shall have to try that recipe! Thanks for having such a nice giveaway - that is a gorgeous panel.
quiltnsrep(at)yahoo(dot)com
I will admit the giant zucchini caught my eye, and your words make me laugh, because (hanging head in shame) I have had about 20 of those this year....they promptly get semi peeled, and shredded and froze for zucchini bread. Alas I have some cucumbers that are in the same condition, those go to the pigs, they loves them.
I've enjoyed watching your progress on Dream Big, so I'm eager to see what you do with this beauty! And if I'm really lucky, I can load it on my frame and follow along with you!!
I'm hoping to get around to paper piecing (your fave, I know, lol) some new placemats for our house. That way, I can return the current ones back to the camper, where they belong!
Sounds like you are well set for your escape, enjoy it!
That was really nice of Melissa and The Sewing Circle, too. Apparently, I just really want to win, so I've doubled my chances and signed up for her newsletter. I also looked around, and I found some wide backing word fabric that a friend was looking for. Win win!
I like the giant Zucchini, very impressive. I love your big dream quilting and the panel looks another fun one to play with. If I was to win the panel would give me a lot of free motion quilting practice, which is just what I need. Enjoy your trip to the beach.
That zucchini salad looks delicious. I will have to see if I can find some GF tortellini. My sister goes to the farmer's market and looks for the largest zucchini they have as she thinks is is easier to cut up or shred a large one rather than many small ones. I had one zucchini plant last year. I should have planted two as mine weren't all that prolific.
This year the deer, squirrels and rabbits have managed to eat or ruin everything I have planted including my hostas.
I love the quilt panel. Thanks for the opportunity to win it.
I signed up for the sewing Circle newsletter. They have a lot of beautiful panels.
This panel has such gorgeous colors!
Aloha from your former home in the middle of nowhere. I've been enjoying seeing your wonderful quilting patterns in the beautiful panel from The Sewing Circle.
I signed up for The Sewing Circle's newsletter. Lots of tempting fabric!
Your zucchini has to be the biggest I have ever seen in my life. I think you should consider submitting it (or the children of it) to the Guinness Book of Records. It is intimidating in size to other zucchini. What a fun giveaway and story behind it too!
The flower panel quilted beautifully and gave you lots of practice to get the creative juices going for the holiday panel. The glamour shot at the garden was very pretty. I have been renting long arm time at a LQS to finish three queen sized quilts that were UFO's, one that is probably more than a decade old! Like you guys, we were camping this week. I was glad to see that I had another chance to enter the giveaway. Thanks so much for sharing your bounty with us in blog land.
Connie
I would love to win this, I purchased a long arm late February and think this would be a great practice piece.
Thanks for the opportunity! I have an Aqua Dream Big panel that you've inspired me to find (somewhere in this mess) and start on.
Can't leave a comment about quilting as I am 'between homes' right now! Sold our home (closed Aug 6) and the home that we finally got a contract accepted on (buying in California is CRAZY!)a new home & it closes Aug 30th - that's with a super accelerated inspection period & pushing the lender as much as I can (thanks to no appraisal required its possible!). I am dreaming of quilting at the moment! Deb E mdenders@msn.com
Awesome zucchini! Love reading your blog ❤️
Beautiful panel!! I love these colors. I am working on a paper-pieced quilt using pastel colors and one of the New York Beauty patterns by Karen Stone. It is a challenge but these colors encourage me that it can be done with my "soft" colored batik scraps. I really enjoy your blog. Thanks.
Good morning:
Time does fly when your having fun. Love tour outing to the Oregon coast and surely jealous of your camping and enjoying your hobby too.
The past year has been a fright but managed to get three quilts off to the quilter and started a block of the month the October of 2019. January of 2020 had major back surgery and August of 2020 I had my right hip replaced. Healing has been good and all the blocks of the monthly program are done, just need to assemble. The book is called Summer Moon by Carrie Nelson and as I said it was a block of the month.
You and I go back to the monthly challenge of three inch houses, paper pieces. And I ended up with a nice wall hanging. Love to share that project too.
I had two questions. One was were did you find that backing? And number two, please shared your tomato salsa recipe and I would like it again.
Please take care and be safe. Marj 2. P.S. pictures to follow when I figure out how. Lol
I just finished an appliqué quilt my friends mother started in 1955. She still has the magazine with the pattern.
