Texas Tech University Museum Goes to the Cats

We had a few errands to run yesterday, but we stopped off at the museum to see the quilt exhibit entitled, Today's Quilts: Art in Stitches. You can see some of the quilts on the website right here. I was able to take pictures there, but it wasn't clear that it was okay to post them to my blog, and so I only took a few. The museum had other exhibits going on as well. It was another one of those places where I could have taken thousands of pictures but, instead, I limited myself to the cats. Here is the one cat quilt that was part of the Art in Stitches exhibit:

I should also have photographed the quilter's name, but I did not. My bad. The quilt was mostly thread-painting, but the fabric seemed to be dyed somehow as well.

At the moment, the museum is featuring an African Grasses exhibit as well. There were quite a few "carnivorous mammals" on display. This one is a cougar.

Here's a bobcat.

This one is a leopard.

Here is a cheetah. I imagine he misses his body.

This was Smitty's favorite...the lion attacking something only he can see.

There were lots of things to see in the museum...dinosaur and mammoth bones, Native American pottery and weaving, lots of ivory carvings from China. There was also a sign acknowledging the ivory ban instituted around 1973 with a disclaimer that all of the ivory carvings on display were created before that time. Anyway...here's a cat carved from ivory.

And I can't be sure this next one is a cat, but I'm saying it is, and it's my blog, so there.

These next images, however, I know for sure and certain that these be cats.

Kind of gives you whisker envy, doesn't it? I'm envious of that pink nose.

And then there are these tails...or maybe it's a tail and a half.

Oh yes, and Sadie likes her new quilt.

So there you go...a day of cats.

Today we'll pay a visit to the National Ranching Heritage Museum, which happens to be a part of the university as well. We noticed it right next door to the museum yesterday. Should be interesting.

That seems to be a very interesting museum! The Lion quilt is fabulous, but the last cats and quilt look more friendly!

Of course you would feature the cats on this trip. I prefer the live to the stuffed, though.

Fun museum and our favorite subject. Love the old clay cat, that is really unique.
Seems this long trip has gotten the kitties feeling at home, while travelling.

What nicely stuffed cats you seen there--
but my favorites are the ones showing us their 'tails'--and how much they like the new quilt!!! I knew that at least one kitty would decide to love that quilt!!!
enjoy, di

Congrats on finishing off your quilt. I don't remember there being much in Lubbock, but I haven't been there in years. Seems you've found some fun stuff to check out during your visit. It has been cold here, for this time of year. I'm beginning to wonder if winter plans on ending this year.

I can't imagine how much work went into that thread painting. Pretty amazing work. Smitty's pink nose gets me every time!

Ah, heart shaped kitty noses! A fav! Sadie's look says to me, "What?! Did you think I WOULDN'T like it?" We are currently north of you in EASTERN Oklahoma. Visiting hubby's grown kids, When we all get home again (you guys and us) we'll be distant neighbors again in Oregon!

Beautiful cats at the Texas Tech museum, especially that fabulous quilt! I wonder if they used Tsukineko inks like Patt Blair does on her quilts. (http://www.pattsart.com/nature.html)

Smitty: "I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille!"

Nice quilt, but LOVE that tail and a half! Glad to see you again - been away, dancing, camping and pretending to be a B & B to out of towners from all over....NC, SC & Canada. Can't wait to get back into my own sewing room and catch up with the traveling ranch/bunch...

Safe travels!
