In yesterday's post, I may have given the wrong impression that we were leaving on our trip right away. Actually, we are leaving one week from today. The remainder of the time at home will be spent figuring out what to pack, getting rid of some things, making a final decision about the housesitter (I'll explain more about that in a later post), cooking some stuff to take along, and general packing of sewing stuff, clothing, toiletries, and food. Oh yes, and I might add some extra kitchen items that we don't usually take along. Also, I have to pick up my quilts from the fair, pick up one last CSA share (Mae will take over after this), visit our dentist, and get my hair permed. Other than that, not a thing to do.
But here's something...Happy Labor Day, Everybody! I was looking for a Labor Day image to share when I came across this:
My undergrad degree was in economics, and most of my economics classes focused on the labor movement because that was what I was most interested in. Many folks these days really have no idea what conditions were like for workers before the labor movement. In a word, they were appalling. This image was shared on a blog post that answers some questions about Labor Day, and I can recommend it. If you're interested in understanding why we celebrate Labor Day, you can read it right here.
But to get on with the labors here at the Three Cats Ranch, I give you this sad image.
Yes, it's my forlorn little cat, considering the circumstances he finds himself in after a night of carousing. Sadie has been beside herself, meowing and crying, certain that we've just forgotten to open the door for her. Smitty sits gazing for hours at the squirrels, birds, and mousies he could be catching.
Yes, it's a cruel world for cats here at the Three Cats Ranch. If only someone would take them on a vacation, or something.
The kids were over for dinner last night, and it was great seeing them. They're getting used to the idea that they'll be on their own for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year for the first time ever. We chuckled a little when Mae observed, "We are adults, after all." It'll be fun to see pictures of their celebrations, but we will definitely be missing them on those days. I keep reminding myself, it's just this one year.
There are no pictures of the other foods I made for our dinner, but I couldn't resist taking a picture of my masterpiece Lemon Meringue Pie. So tasty...and we were really hungry for something decadent after months of dieting.
Today...cracking the diet whip again.
As you know, I've bid fare thee well to my sewing room, although I might sew together some quilted hearts if I have some time before we go. I kind of lost interest in the quilted hearts when none of the seven I've left behind have been reported found. Nevertheless, I might make up a batch to take along if there's time amongst all the other last minute things to do.
Hand stitching is a different story. My days always start with a little hand stitching, and so I can show you that Mathilda is about halfway finished. I'll get some more work done on her this morning.
If you're stitching along with us, today is the last day to link up to the August party. Don't miss out! The linky party is right here.
As for the rest of the day, I'm going to do some laundry and start taking stock of my clothes. I might even get energetic and clean some things out of my closet. I retired way back in 2004, and I know there are some items in the closet that haven't seen the light of day since then. Yesterday I spent some time ejecting unused items from the fifth wheel, and those things will all be going to Goodwill. Seems like a good time to include some unworn clothing from years gone by, doesn't it?

Does sound fun this trip your about to go on.
Where are you going to?
Is this a chance to reach all the remaining states youve not been to so far?
Can't Smitty & Sadie go in the catio ??
I must confess I was one of the confused folks who thought you were on your way. It sounds like you are going to need a vacation after this week! :)
Those poor abused kitties! Keeping them locked up and safe so you can all enjoy you trip together! You are so mean...(another :) )
That pie looks delicious! I can't eat Lemon Meringue Pie (I had to copy and paste that, spelling the middle word was a bit of a struggle) I'm allergic to eggs in quantity and that wonderful pie has eggs in quantity! I miss it so...
Mmmm lemon meringue pie yummy. It's one of my favourites and we haven't had it for ages. Maybe this weekend.... Trying not to overeat as I have managed to lose 18 lbs since July 2016. This year I've managed to hold my weight (thank goodness I didn't gain any) and since beginning of August I've lost 4 lbs. Please stop showing such tasty puds as they are so tempting.
I knew you wouldn't be home for Thanksgiving or Christmas but hadn't really computed it and how the family would react. It was a few years back when we first had one of the children away. Katy was going out with a guy from Chicago who was doing a year at uni here and she went and spent Christmas with his family. It was odd but we skyped and Christmas changed a little from then on but for the better.
Getting all packed for a trip takes me forever!! I always start very early (according to Mr. Wonderful!!) but then he was in the Army and has packing down to a science...
Hope you will be able to continue sewing on your trip...hugs, Julierose
Poor kitties, but I totally understand why you are keeping them in given Smitty's adventure. I was wondering whether you have figured any of the trip past the Niagara falls. I can't believe how long a trip you are planning. How great! Your Lemon Meringue Pie had my mouth watering....it is one of my favorites. Good luck with the packing and purging.
I think it is amazing you two are going to live in your 5th wheel for 1 year and keeping to the coldest started in most of the country. 😯.
Just to share my 2cents worth of history. My grandfather +family came over from the old country. Found jobs as minors. In 4th grade my grandfather was taken out of school and put to work in the coal mines. He was not the youngest working there. The conditions my uncle told me about were horrendous in the early 1910's. Talk about working for the man... My great aunt was a nurse in 1920's I wish I wrote down all the stories she told me-- major eye opener. I am sure you studied these but not many people today know what real hard work is. Wish the best for your trip and hope you plan a couple nice hotels are worked in. 😀(robinsbusiness@hotmail.com)
I wonder if leaving some of those little hearts on this trip might bring a better return. Who knows? Sure would be fun if you saw some found! I'll be thinking about you and your to do list while I do laundry today and get prepped for our trip. Too bad we're not overlapping somewhere, although our trip is much shorter than yours!
Now I'm hungry for LM Pie. Times were bleak long long ago unless you came from a family with money and it's a shame that children had to work in dangerous conditions. I think a good book to read is Upton Sinclair's The Jungle which depicts working conditions at the stock yard. I went on many strikes during the 34 years I worked outside the home and I take it seriously. I wonder if the writer of that article was trying to be funny talking about parading like they were a bunch of clowns back then and they make it sound like there was no health care before obamacare. I had great health care from my first day on the job thanks to union brothers and sisters fighting for those benefits before I came along. I never had to pay for health care until after I retired. My parents struggled much more than I did. Every generation wants to see improvements but I do see a big shift where many want a paycheck but don't want to work for it-sadly some are in my (not immediate) family. I wish I could have a vacation but my dog has cancer and we have to stay close to home just in case so I hope you enjoy your trip.
The look on Smitty's face is priceless.
Thanks for the Labor Day post. Everyone who takes for granted a lunch hour or expects that children will graduate high school should read some history and learn whom they need to thank.
Being retired empty nesters, the holidays are just not the same. I realize you live close to both of your kids, but not all of us do. There are many Christmases when we are home all alone. It is sad, but there is not much we can do to correct it. With our son moving every three or so years at Uncle Sam's whim, he may be 3 hours away or on one coast or the other!
The pie looks amazing! Good luck with all your trip preparations. I hadn't thought about you being gone for the holidays this year. That will be different. We've had one Christmas where we couldn't go home to see family and it was really different.
Smitty looks like he would get along with Henri the Ennui Cat!
Mmmm Lemon Meringue Pie! My Mom made awesome LM pie, but she never used a recipe. I tried to watch & figure it out a time or two, but without much luck. She did a lot of it by taste. :)
I liked that rather tongue-in-cheek post about Labor Day. Thanks for the link!
