Sew Long

We had a wine shipment to pick up yesterday. It was a hot and smoky day. There are many fires burning in Oregon right now. This morning I saw some pictures of a major highway junction on the way to Bend that was all in flames. It was rather alarming, although it is far away from us. Nevertheless, I also read about 140 hikers trapped between two fires in the beautiful Columbia Gorge. We will be driving through there in about a week, so go firefighters! And by all means, be safe.

It's close to harvest season at the vineyards and it showed in the vines. It wasn't the best light for taking pictures, but I did take a couple.

It's a little late in the season for blooming things, but there were a few of those too.

We arrived home after lunch, and I had some cooking to do. Then, I headed into the sewing room to work on my last project before we go. At the bottom of the stairs, I found this little waif. She keeps thinking the door will open and she'll be able to go outside. Nothing doing, Little Missy.

So then I got to work on the March block for Tuxedo Tales. First, I fused down the applique.

When I turned to the sewing machine to do the top-stitching and machine embroidery, a shadowy figure flew by.

We call her the Cat of Darkness.

From there, I did all the machine stitching.

And then took it upstairs to do the hand-stitching. I only got as far as the little clover blossom on the left when I had to stop for the day, but I was able to finish it up this morning.

And then, the only thing left to do was to sew on the button eyes and trim it to size.

Cute, huh? These are the three I have finished so far.

When we get home next spring, it'll be time to work on April's block, which seems completely appropriate.

And when you think about it, coming home in April to work on April's block, coupled with making progress on every one of my WIP's this past month, it seems as if the universe is all set to right...completely balanced...simpatico...stable.

So with that I cleaned up the sewing room and said, Sew Long, Sewing Room.

Bye-bye, Books and Sewing Machine.

Happy Trails, Thread.

See you next spring...actually, tomorrow when I start packing up my sewing stuff for the trip.

This morning the sun rose as a red orb in our smoky skies.

The kids are coming for dinner. It's half made already, but today I'll be making a Cool Tomato-Corn Soup from our CSA tomatoes and corn. It's a chilled soup, so nice on a hot summer day. Also, the plums are not ripe, and so it's a lemon meringue pie for dessert. Definitely not on our diet, but we'll have the kids here to help us eat it all in one sitting.

I didn't realize your trip was going to be that long! Wow! And I don't blame you for keeping the kitties inside after Smitty's night of partying. I'm glad he's safe and sound. If you happen to hit NC in your travels, I can tell you of some great quilt shops and places to see. I've been here 25 years and am always finding new great things to do. Safe travels! I'm excited to hear about your trip once it commences.

My Sister-in-Law lives in Bend, OR, and says it's extremely smoky where she is. She tries to stay inside as much as possible. Those Tuxedo Tales blocks are adorable. Happy travels! Andrea

I love the tuxedo blocks and that you'll be back in April to work on the April block. Poor Sadie, she does look as if she's going a little stir crazy being kept indoors. I hope she doesn't come up with an escape plan.

Wow, you are going to be away for a long time! What a great sewing room. I do have to tell you that I love those appliqued cats. I like following the pictures until you add the eyes which bring instant personality.

The grapes look so good. I love standing in our arbor right now and inhaling the smell of sweet grapes. It's just going to get more intense as they finish ripening. The Tuxedo blocks are darling.

Love the fabrics you used for the kitties, they look wonderful.
I need to clean up my room, but it will have to wait till we get back.

It always seems so sudden when a deadline comes. You have created a lot in the last few weeks and definitely put a big dent in your WIP. We have smoke down here in the San Francisco Bay Area. The weather people say it is coming from fires in the Sierras and OREGON! It is amazing the smoke is traveling so far. It burns my eyes and tickles the throat. I stay in as much as possible. I ve killed off a few UFOs as a result. Items started back in 2014 are now done. There are a few more to do and I am gaining back space to store my most recent purchases. That Cool Tomoko Soup sounds interesting. I will see if I can find a recipe for it as we have quite a few tomatoes that need to be used. Packing for your trip.

Montana is officially on fire! They are saying now that until we get snow, we are burning. It's a terrible way to start you day by checking the air quality for the area and celebrating because it's 'moderate' rather than hazardous!

Ok, goodbyes make me just a tiny bit sad. Hearing you say ta-ta to your lovely sewing room . . until tomorrow morning. But still, with every adventure there are goodbyes, I guess. I sure hope your kitties behave themselves on the trip. Your lemon meringue pie looked absolutely delicious, and I'm sure it was! It's all getting so close now; I'm so excited for you!

I'm so glad you're doing Tuxedo Tails, because it keeps calling to me, but i have far too much to dig out from under to get it. So this way I can still see it pop up. Are you all ready for your trip? It'll be fun to see where you go and enjoy the sights by proxy. I can't believe how many fires are still going, and I hope they're subdued right away.

I'm glad that the fires aren't near 3 Cats Ranch. And hopefully the firefighters will have a handle on the ones in the way of your trip before you get there. So far we've been lucky and the biggest fire is not putting any smoke to my side of the hills. There just never seems to be a happy medium, does there? Floods in Texas, etc. and flames in the north.

It might not have been the best light for photos, but the grapes look GOOD! :)

Your tuxedo cats are so fun! And your sewing room looks fabulous - how nice that it will be waiting for you & ready to go in April.

What a wonderful finish that is! I enjoyed the look at the plants, too. Have a wonderful time away. Hopefully someplace with clear air for a while! Cat of Darkness fits!
