Dryden, Ontario, Canada

It was kind of a dark and gray day for our drive to Dryden, Ontario. There wasn't much rain, but a few sprinkles now and then. We've seen scads of Canada geese flying south. Tis the season for that. A better picture would have been nice, and I shot several today. This was the best of the bunch, despite all the power lines. It looks as if they're roosting there, but they are not. They are flying...thousands of them...perhaps hundreds of thousands of them.

We passed by a few barns in Manitoba

in varying stages of repair.

Then, we passed into Ontario Province.

We've left the prairie behind, and we're now seeing a lot more granite outcroppings. We believe this is a part of the Canadian Shield.

We learned more about the Canadian Shield when we visited Michigan on an earlier trip. You can read more about it at the link I've given you and in this blog post from 2014. This also seems to be the land of lakes...lots and lots of lakes formed in the depressions of the Shield. We'll see more of this as we move on through Ontario and around the Great Lakes region.

Also, I wanted to mention these little signs we've seen...the diamond shaped sign just to the right of center, half green and half white. These are posted on both ends of bridges. Our understanding is that the sign will turn all green when the temperature is below freezing, warning drivers of ice on the bridge.

We've been on the hunt for propane, and we've yet to find any. Our hunt took us on a side trip into Kenora. We didn't find any propane, but we did find Smitty's Auto Body Service. It seems our little cat is quite an entrepreneur.

The first thing the kitties do when we arrive is barge out onto the newly-hung catio. Usually they share it only grudgingly, but there's no time for squabbling when we're in new territory.

Also, Smitty wanted me to be sure and show you his new scratching post. We like it because it fits between the cupboard door on the left, and the heater vent on the right.

Today we'll continue on to Thunder Bay. We'll either stay in a free spot or else in a KOA. It all depends on our success in finding propane on the way. We're fine with our propane for now, but we're going to need to find some soon.

Thanks for the info on the green and white signs. We decided they must be for snowplow drivers so they knew where the beginning and end of the bridges were. You have helped clear that up! Enjoy your time in Ontario. You may want to check out Kakabeka Falls just west of Thunder Bay. ~Jeanne

Now this landscape is more along what I thought....all the rocky elevations. Thanks for the Shield information, all the better to understand.

Thanks for the link to your earlier post about the shield. Although I had read it before I certainly couldn't remember it. A great scratching post Smitty, your every need is definitely being catered for on this trip.

I second the suggestion to see Kakabeka Falls. A beautiful place, altho not as spectacular as Niagara.

Wow, what a lot of flying geese! Glad they are not flying right OVER you....

Those granite outcroppings are interesting looking - and thanks for the shield link. If not pulling the big rig, I might have pulled over to take more pictures of those. Gorgeous colors behind/above them too! In trying to look up those white & green signs, I ended up watching some icy road safety videos - making me so glad I live in SoCal!
That Smitty is a busy entrepreneur isn't he! Wow! And a nice new scratching post & toys. Not spoiled much, huh?

More fun stories from you. The q store looked great. The kit with the Canada theme has been quite popular in Canada. Some stores in Canada still sell by the yard--it is not consistent. Also you are spending American dollars so it should be a bargain for you. Our prices are high, though, because we pay a higher minimum wage and so on.
I enjoyed the photo of your RV and the truck. Is this the new truck Mike got? I thought it was red.
The RV looks really big!

I agree on the stop at Kakabeka Falls. It's a great place to stretch your legs and the views are beautiful. I didn't know about the green/white sign. What an interesting idea. Cute pic of the kitties checking out things on the catio.

I had been missing your blog, but just thought you were on your trip. Today I discovered it had starting putting them all in the junk file. Now I have to go back and read them before they're deleted. Has done this before with other blogs I follow. Frustrating! But glad you're have a great trip.

Don't know if you get Netflix, but I've been watching 2 Canadian programs on it... Taste of The Country, and Backroad Bounty, a picker's paradise! They've been visiting a lot of lake front property, so likely in your area. What antiques might YOU find? Love your outdoor kitty fresh air house! Of all the blogs I get, I read yours first!

Look for a Canadian Tire for propane. The name is misleading. They are like a Kmart but better with aisles of great stuff, camping fishing automotive household and they usually fill propane tanks. We went to the one in Perth this summer and they have an entire aisle just for electric tea kettles!
