Lucky Seven

There was a little bit of everything yesterday. To start, I quilted the seventh cat block. The quilt moves a little closer to a finish day by day.

When I had that finished, I used most of another quart of apple pie filling to make this dessert I'm calling an "Apple Pie Jalousie".

It's a little like a giant apple turnover. A while back I wrote about how this is accomplished, and nothing could be simpler. It gets its style and good looks from frozen puff pastry, which is widely available in most grocery stores. Always before when I've made this, I've cooked the filling at the same time. In this case, I was using the apple pie filling I made recently...the one where most of the seals on the jars failed. Now I'm hard at work using up all the pie filling that is currently residing in the refrigerator. Things could definitely be worse.

With that finished, I got back to work finishing up the strip sets for the Gingerbread Square quilt.

Thank goodness my trusty sidekick cat woke up from his nap just about the time I was ready to start cross-cutting the strips.

He watched me like a hawk to make sure I got all my measurements correct.

When all was said and done, I had 176 of these red-white-red sections,

and 88 of these white-red-white sections.

Phew. And let me tell you, that is a lot of cutting. Before I quit for the day, I was well along sewing these together. There are 88 nine-patches set on point, and so even when the nine-patches are sewn together, I'll be sewing triangles to all four sides before they're ready to sew into a quilt. I expect to have these finished in the year 2036.

Today I'll be quilting block 8 of the cats, and then I'll get back to work on the nine-patches. It's a CSA pick-up day, and I'm still not caught up on the vegetables since taking our two-week vacation last month. Fortunately, the CSA comes to a close for the season in about one month. I love our CSA veggies, but I'm ready for a break until it all picks up again next year.

This can be your leaders and enders project.

At lest His Highness was facing you to keep an evil eye on your measurements and you didn't have to contend with a tail while you were trimming all 1,997,768 pieces. :)

Doing a bit at a time is a nice way to quilt without over doing it, I need to start doing that, so time to set up the machine and get the tension as good as I can and just do it. That turnover looks good, I want to try some but need to make my own crust since I don't use sugar, though I might have to put a pinch in the dough.

The cats are coming along great, including that furry one excelling at his snoopervising position on the cutting board!

Oh, that pile of little 9's just makes me drool. Like Cheryl said - use those corner triangles as leader/enders.

It's hard to go wrong with red and white. You've made lots of progress in the sewing room and in the kitchen!
