Heartbroken

We're mourning Maggie this morning. She's been missing for 24 hours. She went out yesterday morning, and came back inside for some kitty treats just briefly before going outside with Smitty again. She hasn't been seen since.

We've considered many possibilities, but there's really no way to know what might have happened to her. She's been known to wander occasionally, and we're keeping in mind that she was living  in the wild before she came to us. She has been timid when outside, keeping close to the house nearly 100% of the time and staying hidden under bushes. It was quiet and wet yesterday morning. The grass needs mowing, and so she wouldn't have wandered out into it or crossed the open field. It's hard to imagine that a predator would have had an opportunity to sneak up on her.

We've always chosen our homes so that they're safe for the kitties. There is virtually no traffic, and we receive very few visitors aside from family. Occasionally a delivery truck arrives on the scene, but there were no deliveries yesterday, and no other visitors either. A deer has been hanging around, and while he wouldn't have been a threat to her, he might have frightened her enough that she's still hiding somewhere.

We're trying to stay hopeful, but we're not very optimistic. I will, of course, post immediately if she shows up again.

Oh Barbara, that is horrible - Praying she returns, and quickly.

I hope she returns safe and sound! Maybe she just got distracted and wondered further away than she meant to. My Greyson returned after missing for several days.

This is one reason why our present 3 felines are indoor cats. In the past we lost one to a garbage truck, which we didn't find out for several days. We had to call the SPCA & found out his demise. Another cat, all white, succumbed to cancer from laying in the sun. Our present 3 kitties keep my husband and I entertained and are companions after our two daughter's "flew the coop." We have numerous stories about the two who lived outdoors that remind me of your plight. One time the orange tabby came home with obvious injuries to a leg and had to be treated by the vet, a very expensive experience. While we spare no money on our beloved pets, keeping them inside has made them healthier and although they occasionally sneak out, when confronted, they immediate run back inside as they find out it's not that fun. My heart goes out to you, I hope she comes back soon and I urge you to rethink allowing your cats to go outside. At first it's not easy, but the longer they're inside, the easier it becomes and the more enjoyment you will reap as a reward.

So sorry to hear this. For what it's worth -- in the course of my studies, one of the tidbits that came up is that when cats go missing, they are most often found within just a few feet of their homes. Apparently they can become so frightened by who knows what that they will duck and cover and not respond when called, some will even stay there and literally starve to death from fear. So they used to recommend crawling all around the yard, peering under every bush. I learned this after I'd been on vacation and my cats had been not-cared for by a house-sitter. By the time I returned home one of my cats had been lost for over a week, and I finally found him not ten feet from the back door. I literally had to crawl under the bush before I could see him. He was happy to see me, but didn't give even a peep when I was searching for him. Fingers crossed for a happy ending.

Oh, no! So sorry for you; I know you are worried. Hopefully she was just frightened by something and is hiding until she feels it is safe!

Don't give up on her! She's lived wild so there's likely to be times the call of the wild will call to her. I think she may have just wandered further, become a little disorientated or maybe even trapped in a barn or garage, chasing after a mouse.
She's cute enough to know that there is safety, food and comfort with you.
I'm sure she will return
Trust her x

Sending positive thoughts and prayers that Maggie comes home very soon. By chance are there any sounds that catch her attention and she'll come for? Our cats always responded to the shake and rattle noise of the cat treat can. Thus, I'm wondering if you went for a walk and made such a noise if Maggie would come out of hiding. Hopefully it is the rain, the deer, and she ran up a tree, or someplace else to hide, and will be back soon...very hungry and wanting to snuggle.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that Maggie is missing. Here's hoping that she's just scared and hiding close to home like someone else said. I'm keeping you in my thoughts as you go through this. Come on home Maggie! Your people love you and miss you.

Praying that she returns home soon. Has Smitty been out looking for her? Maybe she wanted to go camping again?

Oh! Hoping DeeDee is right and she's just been frightened into hiding. I'm in Va visiting but will check back often.

Our Calvin went missing years ago and he was absolutely petrified. We believe he was hiding behind some old pallets leaning against the house the whole time refusing to budge even when we call. It was Dan who found him the next day. Calvin was just petrified and would not move until I set him inside the house and he slowly relaxed and realized he was home. I was absolutely thankful as he was outside all night long. :-(

When gone for 3 weeks Lana (cat) became distressed when a workman used a nail gun in the house and Lana scaddadled. The pet sitter could not find her. Our next door neighbor looked and found her two days later on the roof of the house across the street. No one could coax her down. She stayed up there 4 days through days of rain, wind and cold. We arrived home and she so wanted down but was afraid to come. Standing on a ladder and talking to her for 30-40 minutes she finally came to me inch by inch. She was covered with fleas. I guess the fleas were cold and wanted a warm spot to be. After getting back home she was the most affectionate cat. She wanted to be held and snuggled (something not the norm). She now believes my lap is one of the best places to be and still will follow me from room to room when not otherwise napping or playing.

Another one of our previous cats named Maggie disappeared for two weeks. We thought she was a never coming back. When she appeared she was quite thin. Didn't have a clue to where she was. Now, several years after our Maggie went to kitty heaven I think I know what happened. Our new cat Stella loves to visit a house 2 houses up. They leave their crawl space door open from time to time. Stella darted in when I called for her. Aha! That is where our Maggie must have been then the door was closed behind her.

My hopes are Ms Maggie is similarly frightened and just waiting for you to find her. Good thoughts being sent your way for Ms Maggie to return or be found soon.

Here's hoping that Maggie is just on walkabout and returns shortly. It feels like she just got her sea legs to get along with Smitty and explore her "new" house and yard...

I hope Maggie just got scared and is hiding. I have had that happen with cats that were used to being out, they tend to roam sometimes. I have been keeping mine in, they are both to used to indoors now and I know they would get lost if they went too far.

Is Maggie microchipped? That was how we were reunited with my sister's cat who disappeared while we were kittysitting when they were out of the country for a month. After 7 days of searching and putting up fliers with her photo at every nearby intersection and group of mailboxes we finally got a call. She had traveled over 2 miles and had crossed Lafayette Hwy and the woman who found her called the number on her tag.

Oh my goodness, I know you are both sick with worry. I am praying she makes her way back home very soon . I wish we could send Smitty on the hunt for her, but I am sure he doesn't know where she has wondered to either. Awaiting her fast return.

Oh no 😢

You've probably already checked everywhere, but just in case, I don't suppose there's a chance she got back into the RV you just took a trip in? And perhaps can't get back out?

Or perhaps try letting smitty out and watching him to see if he looks for her and picks up what we can't hear or smell with his kitty senses?
