Farmily Jewels

This morning I sat and hand stitched the binding for the little vegetable patch quilt. It's been given the name of "Farmily Jewels". The word "farmily" is the term our CSA farmers use for the CSA members. Perhaps others have used it, but I'd never heard it before becoming a member. While I didn't expect to finish the quilt so quickly, there it is. It's fun when a project captures one's full attention that way.

Here's the finished quilt:

It ends up at 32 x 21 inches. It's from a tutorial I found a long time ago from Purl Soho. I've adapted it by adding the sun at the top, and I cut about four inches from the bottom. The dividing line between sky and earth was originally smack in the middle, and I thought it looked better with a little less dirt.

Yesterday I quilted lots of roots in the soil...or maybe those are worm tunnels...I'm not sure.

Then I quilted rays around the sun. The biggest reason for adding the sun was so that I could quilt those rays.

Then, I fussed and fumed over choosing a binding fabric. I couldn't decide on the color, or whether it should be solid or print, or pretty much anything. Finally, I settled on this sort of light green stripedy fabric. You can see it on the left in the image below.

When I left it yesterday, I had the binding sewn on by machine.

This morning, I finished it off.

Here's how it looks on the back.

And this is the label I made for it. I'll get that sewn on sometime today, and then it will be finished.

The farmers aren't always around when I pick up my share of veggies, and so I'll just carry it with me each week until I run into them so that I can place it in their dirty hands. Their motto is "Dirty hands, clean hearts". Hopefully, they'll hold it close to their clean hearts.

Yesterday I was trying to find images to use for the label and I typed in the phrase "Images of Working Hands Farm". In the process, I came across many pictures of them and their farm. Here's a picture of them.

They're so cute I want to adopt them. And when I consider that they do ALL the work on their farm, I'm simply amazed at their dedication and the strength of their backs.

The only thing left on my October list of goals is to quilt the Blushing Aspens table runner. As you can see, it's still occupied with even more fervant napping than it was yesterday.

I need to make a trip into town today, and so I'm hopeful I can get a crack at it this afternoon.

Love the quilt, it might be my favorite yet, and LOVE the name. Perfect perfect perfect. Blushing Aspens is clearly going to be a beauty. Your cats know their stuff.

That little quilt is a winner! And roots or wormholes, those wormholes provide much needed aeration of the soil, so I'd say they're a plus! Sounds like a certain kitty needs a warm sunny day so he can vacate his current napping spot.

What a great quilt, it is beautiful. My granny always told me 'let sleeping cats lie'. Picasso is impossible to move once he's chosen his napping spot so you don't have a choice but to leave him

Your quilt looks great, Barb.

Great little thank you quilt. Luckily mine chose the snuggly blanket on the couch for nap time as I needed the table to dump some very tiny scraps.

Gayle's right, you are going to make them cry! Farmily Jewels is perfect for them and it's some growing veggies that they won't need to tend too.
Oh Smitster - get up & let Mom quilt the table runner!!
