Salsa and Sewing

Monday was a day of playing catch-up...not ketchup...catch-up. Don't let the morning's salsa binge fool you.

There was watering to do, but then I got straight to work on the salsa. This was made from our own home grown tomatoes. All but a few went into the pot. There are a few left on the plants, but they are probably at least a week or more from ripening. There is a Facebook page for our CSA members, and I've been following along with the canning there. Already, I had 30 lbs. of tomatoes coming to me this Friday. After seeing all the saucy goodness on the Facebook page, I contacted the farmers and ordered ten more pounds, for a total of 40 lbs. That ought to keep me out of trouble for a while. Look for those this coming weekend.

Although the salsa took most of the morning, there was still time to work on my latest stitchery, Feed the Cat. All the applique is finished now, and the top-stitching is under way.

When that's finished, there will be two borders added. Don't you love the expression on the cat's face?

My guild meeting was last night. We got a peek at this little quilt made for donation to raffle off as a fund-raiser for one of our local libraries. The library sponsors a program in which children read to dogs, and so the quilt had a dog theme. Cute idea, and a generous donation from one of our members.

Jody Houghton spoke at our July guild meeting. You may recognize Jody as the artist who creates the "Sisterhood of Quilters" fabric panels. She was there to talk about the class she'll be teaching next month for creating bags using her panels, or indeed, whatever panel you like. There will be some added content for creating fabric panels from your own photographs or art work.

But the part of the meeting I was most interested in was the UFO Contest. A little less than a year ago, participating members wrote out lists of unfinished projects. For each project finished during the year, participants received a raffle ticket. The contest was opened and we were treated to a huge show of finished UFO's. Quilts were still being shown when I snapped this image. By evening's end, quilts were draped over pretty much every available surface.

That's a whole lot of sewing right there.

My list contained 20 UFO's (I don't mess around). During the year, I finished 7 and so I had 7 chances to win...and I DID!!! Four winners were each presented with checks for $30. That was way better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. (Think of getting poked in the eye with a sharp stick as the Stanbro benchmark for the goodness or badness of a thing. Yeah, we're high-minded folks.)

So, not bad for a year's work.

Today is a CSA pick-up day. I always try to get an early start on dinner for CSA days. For once, I've used up all my farm eggs and we are eggless. When you consider that I've been 3 dozen eggs behind at times, using them all up is quite an accomplishment. The shares are getting more and more interesting with lots of fun peppers, sweet melons, and gorgeous heirloom tomatoes. It's always fun to see what's new as the season progresses.

Aside from that, I should have plenty of time to get some work done on the hungry cat of my stitchery. Another heat advisory goes into effect for our area at 11:00 a.m. today. And that should serve as a warning to get my housework done early in the day.

Today being Tuesday, it's time to link up to:

Val's Quilting Studio

Today's theme is "School," and that immediately put me in mind of the Wonky Schoolhouse quilt

made for my friend Lisa...who is now a retired teacher. Try to keep up! You can read the original post from 2012 right here.

Yum! Can't wait for our tomatoes to ripen. Cat stitchery is super cute. Smitty should approve as there don't seem to be any woofies lurking about.

What fun from the salsa to the UFO's to winning. I love canning and over 40 years I have canned and frozen practically everything. the garden was always my husband's thing, I was on the receiving end and put it all up for the winter. He is gone now and I miss it even though at the time it kept me so busy. All those quilts, what neat projects to share with one another and to show off. Your kitty cat has an adorable expression on it's face. Love it! Congrats on being one of the winners.

Wow! That's a lot of finished projects. I've finished a whopping 2. Ha Ha! I'm not as ambitious as you. What a nice "reward" for getting all of them done. I really like that cat! Maybe I'll use that as my motivation to finish a few UFO's of my own....
