Wonders Never Cease

Today I can report that my walk on the wild side has ended with my ego still intact. You might wonder how I was able to take these

to a finished quilt in one afternoon. Here's my answer:

It's true I did a lot of cooking yesterday, but I still had plenty of time for sewing. Certainly I couldn't do any housework because that would have meant making noise that would have distracted from the game. And everyone knows that football is always played at a whisper.

So there you go. And here you go: My finished quilt top for the "orphan blocks and UFO's" challenge of Project Quilting 6:

It finished at 21 x 44 inches. It was made from this orphaned project...not even a UFO because I'd totally banished it from mind and memory.

It's origin gives me a perfect name for it: "Fractured Flower Garden."

So when I finished it, I laid it down on the floor to inspect it. When I did, Mr. Smitty wasted not even half a second claiming it as his own.

Oh Wow! A yoga mat, FOR ME?? It's purrfect! You really shouldn't have, but I'm so glad you did!

So this morning I auditioned several fabrics for the back. One seemed too pretty. Another was a little too colorful (if you can imagine that), then I pulled out this one. It's one of the oldest in my fabric bins. I used it in a different quilt, and I had almost the exact amount I needed, already cut to size, for this quilt. That settled it. Isn't it great when you can use up virtually all of a fabric completely?

It's sandwiched now and ready for quilting. Recall that we have just one week to finish these Project Quilting challenges, and so I'm getting right to work on it this afternoon.

I have a simple design planned for it, and so it shouldn't take long. I'm trying to decide whether to bind it in black or to use a pinky-red. If you look at the row of vertical swatches, second row from the left, fourth one from the bottom. It's that same color. What do you think? Black or Pinky-red? And here's something else to think about: If I use black, I'll be using the last of that black fabric too. There's something to be said for using up two lengths of yardage in one quilt, isn't there?

That is beautiful and love the colors against the black.

Fantastic! I would choose black for the binding because I usually play it safe with matchy-matchy stuff. But the pink would pop. Great finish!

Wow I love that quilt Barbara, your creative mojo was certainly working overtime. I think the black binding as it would let the blocks do all the talking. I wish I could interest husband and son in watching sport so I could quilt but no luck with that so far.

That's great, I love it. Normally I would pick the pink, but I like the idea of the black for the binding, keeps it sophisticated :)

I love what you did with those blocks!

What a great way to use your orphaned roses ... love how it turned out. How about doing a faux piping binding using the black on the outside and the pink as a small accent? Here's a link to show you what I mean.

Seems to me that Smitty should have quite the collection of his own quilts by now. ;)

I love it! It reminds me of the stained glass window in the church I grewup in. I really love it!

Black binding if you want you "blocks" to continue to float, but pink if you want them contained. Although I do like the idea of the faux piping as suggested by Janarama. It's very easy to do so you'd be able to stay within your "week" window for completion.

I love it. I've always wanted to do something with black and brights, I love that look.

Oh, Barbara, this is stunning!! To think those few flowers that drove to insanity turned into something so beautiful. Love the name and I vote for black binding.

I *L*O*V*E* this quilt! My first thought was black binding, but after finding the second-from-left-fourth-from-the-bottom square, I really liked that pink. THEN, reading the other comments above, I think Janarama & Marei's thought of using a pop of the pink with a black binding is JUST RIGHT.
But I really like that you've done something with those blocks that irritated you & it's turned out so wonderfully!!! Good on ya!

Wow! You just amaze me sometimes! That is really nice! And I'm sure that Smitty appreciates you putting that together just so he can do yoga! I vote for black binding. I think that pink will be distracting and of course the black will show of more of Smitty's beautiful fur that he leaves after he lies on it!

Wonderful!!!! Gorgeous save of those abandoned blocks - and now you love them :) Smitty has become a true quilt connoisseur of quality quilts by now and knows a winner when he sees one. What if you went with the black binding, but adding a band of small stripes of the color on a section of one side or two sides? Something in that vein. Not too much, just a touch to echo the piecing in the quilt. Then you get both - use up the black (extra bonus points!) and bring a little color out into the binding :*)

Amazing what you did with those flower blocks! Either color for the binding will be great since the quilt is already great!

Wow Barbara! What an incredible turn out! I would go for black binding :)

Is there enough pinky-red for a thin border and then the black binding? You could use up two fabrics that way. Either one would be fine for the binding, but I think the pinky-red would really make it pop.

I've done many quilt projects on Super Bowl Sunday. Perfect time to start one..game in the background and you can always turn and watch the replay when something exciting happens. Yes, using up fabric is rewarding. Sew on.

This quilt wants to be free and unframed; I add my vote for black border.

Talk about making lemonade from lemons! I love what you did with the layout. I probably would have just portioned them out evenly and that, while nice enough, certainly doesn't give the artistic look that you achieved. Congrats! I'm glad that Smitty gave it his purr of approval...it's so nice to have a helper who can plan a use for each project ... a nap mat !

WOW, that is a great "rescue" from the trash type of quilt. As Carole says, you sure did make lemonade from lemons. So sweet when you can do this. You pulled it off. Since it is a modern design now, I vote for black binding. You don't want to distract from the artisitic design that you created.
