If you're as old as the Pyramids of Giza, like I am, then you might remember that old skit on Saturday Night Live where John Belushi plays a rude house guest. And if you were born sometime after the 14th Century, you can see it right here.
That's the way I feel about Joseph's Quilt. I started this quilt in August of 2011. It's been sitting around my sewing room with its feet up on my sewing table, smoking cigarettes and cussing, ever since. Finally, finally, finally, I think it's going to get a job and move out.
I finished the quilting yesterday.
It's not the best quilting I've ever done, but finished is a good place to be.
Remember this spool of thread I was using? I took the wrapper off of it just before I took this picture. It's one of those 1200 yard spools of Coats & Clark Star variegated thread. I used the whole thing, and I still wasn't finished.
Fortunately, I had something similar enough, and even I can't tell where I changed horses in the middle of the stream.
I wasn't sure which fabric I was going to use for the binding, but as I was cutting the excess backing and batting from it yesterday, I decided to use the extra for the binding. The backing fabric doesn't appear anywhere else on the front of the quilt, and so it seemed like a good choice. I like the way it looks.
Here's how it looks from the back. I was afraid the quilting wouldn't show at all, but it definitely does.
I'm still hand-sewing the binding. As of this morning, I'm 3/4 of the way around. I'd love to sit and finish it off, but I have lots to do today. And it always impresses me when someone else gets on Facebook or their blog to tell me how busy they are, so I figured I'd do that too. Because...you know...priorities, people.
This weekend we're heading out to our friends' Greg and Jan for our annual weekend get-together. Think of it as a tie-dye weekend since everyone there will definitely remember the Saturday Night Live skit I mentioned above. It's a good time, and we always enjoy it. Traditionally, I make the food for Friday night when it's a smaller crowd. We're expecting six on Friday this year. I'm making my pulled pork sandwiches, 7-layer salad, German potato salad, and blueberry hand pies. Also, I'm throwing together a 7-layer dip appetizer to share on Saturday night. All of that has to get done over the next two days, along with packing the camper.
Also today, I'm heading back to my knee doctor to let him take a look at my pesky right knee. It seems whenever we gear up for a trip when I'm going to want to do some hiking, my knee decides to act up and be a literal pain. It's worst when I'm walking on uneven ground or going down stairs. Right now I'm having to go down the stairs backwards, so painful is my knee. Just picture that in your mind for a minute. Don't think I can't hear you laughing.
So now that I've moaned and groaned about how busy I am and how much my knee is hurting, I guess I'll go take care of business. I have miles to go before I sleep.

That quilt turned out great. I understand that feeling of FINALLY getting something done and out of your hair!
Hope your knee feels better before your trip!
I do remember the SNL skit and think it rather funny you refer to your colorful quilt to it. But I think it is wonderful. And I am not laughing about the backward walk down stairs as I do that too. Just be careful as that is how I fell - thought I was at the bottom and turned to walk on - just wasn't at the bottom.
Love your Joseph quilt! The colors are fantastic and your quilting is very good. If it was my quilt, I'd WANT it to be the "Thing That Wouldn't Leave!"
I, too, am WAY too busy.....which is why I'm reading blogs right now. I have my priorities straight! Sorry to hear about your knee. And I am picturing you coming backwards down those stairs. Any snickering is being done with love I assure you. Great job on getting the quilt done. I hate when my quilts take over the sewing room...feet on table, smoking cigarettes, cussing..AND playing pool at your house. Tell Joseph to pack up his cigs, and hit the road. It's time for him to move out of the house. Slacker....
cool quilt
I hope Joseph's quilt didn't put cigars out in the dip too... love the backing & binding.
Oh dratted knees. I have to go up & down the stairs one step at a time mostly. I'd be afraid I'd go a$$ over teakettle if I tried to back down the stairs!
Oh, and the dreamcicle is in the mail - you should be getting email updates as it's on its way. :D
This quilt has LOTS of personality! The colors are so happy, and your quilting has really done it justice. Now go off and enjoy your weekend! Congrats!
Oh, it looks really great, love the back with the FMQ on this multi-color-explosion!
Your quilt is a very happy quilt, it makes me smile just looking at it. I know about things taking longer than expected, I have blocks for a quilt top that was started in the 1980's, I think I have you beat for oldest. LOL!
Are the fur kids going this weekend too? Hope you all enjoy your time at the coast.
I know how you feel about some quilts being rude guests. But you won over this one. It turned out great!
Your quilting for Joseph's Coat is amazing! Feels great when a long term project gets completed. Some of mine have been around much longer than yours. This year I have completed one that was started in Jan'08 and sewn blocks together for two other old-timers that now need quilting. I have a few that are even older. My guild is having a "yard" sale next month, so some of them may get re-homed!
Gosh you're busy, now I feel like I need to get busier :)
The binding looks perfect. Hope you managed to get the binding done so Joseph's Coat can get to work as a cuddle quilt.
Love that backing and binding.... it's one of my favorite fabrics of all time!!
Wow quite a beautiful quilting job you did. You And big Bertha are quite proficient! I am sorry to hear the knee is acting up again, perhaps the Doc will make it better, so you can enjoy your weekend with friends. Happy times ahead with friends , enjoy!
I love it Barbara and the quilting turned out marvelous. I like the backing too and how clever to make it the binding too.
I love it, wonderful fabrics and it fits the name. The quilting is perfect for it.
Debbie
That is a great quilt and I love the backing - and the metaphor! :)
Great to get those long standing projects finished. The quilt looks wonderful even though it overstayed it's welcome.
The backing is great and you really can see all the quilting! I hope your knee feels better for your trip.
The food and everything sounds good.
I just pray your knee will calm down.
Yippee for you for finishing it. I'm sure you are really happy about that. It turned out fabulous.
Love that happy looking quilt! And it looks like you custom quilted each block, so kudos. That quilt hung around waiting for the binding inspiration to hit so it could be sure to go out into the world just right (that binding is spot on).
Sorry about your knee, hope you and the doc found a solution so you can do the hiking trip!
