Big Finish

Finally, finally, finally I've finished We are the World. I spent nearly all day on it yesterday, and I am so happy to have it done. Of course, I still need to hand sew the binding onto the back, and I want to add a label to it, but the biggest part is done. Yay!

The fabric for the border and sashing are busy enough that I figured simple stippling was enough there.

Anything else wasn't going to show much. And I put a heart with a flourish in each of the cornerstones.

Here's how it looks from the back.

Recall that I asked you what you thought about the binding a while back. I wasn't sure whether to use the polka dots or the rainbow fabric. The vote was an even split for each fabric. Some of you had other creative ideas about how to do it. After toying with several ideas, I decided to use the rainbow for a flange and then bind it with the polka dot. I like the way this turned out.

While I started this quilt for the 2013 Rainbow Scrap Challenge, it is going to end up as a gift for the granddaughter of our good friend, Chuck. Her name is Frankie. She's a cutie, isn't she?

In October, 2013, Frankie was diagnosed with a devastating neurological disorder known as Rett Syndrome. It took quite some time to obtain an accurate diagnosis, and it will be a rocky road ahead for Frankie and her family. I was just finishing sewing together the blocks for We are the World when I learned of Frankie's diagnosis. I knew immediately that this quilt was intended for her all along. People come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, and abilities, and I firmly believe that the world needs all of us. You can read more about Frankie's story right here.

In other news...I discovered two strawberries that the deer missed. I popped them in my mouth quickly before a deer showed up to take them out of my hand. With all the strawberry plants we have, we could sell strawberries in a booth by the side of the road...except for the friendly deer, who eat them like pigs.

And someone's been digging for gophers again. This makes Mike very happy.

Today will be a busy day. I've spent the past several days doing nothing but sewing, and I'm still needing to do some housework. Also, I'm getting my hair permed. I need to pick up a few things from the grocery store for our camping trip this weekend, and then I need to start preparing some food. I may not blog again until we get back from our trip on Monday, but I'll probably post a few pictures from our trip between now and then.

Also, don't forget that the NewFO Challenge and Linky party goes live on Monday. Are you ready to show off your new stuff?

Having watched your progress on We are the World quilt it is great to see the finished product. It is beautiful.

As I was cruising thru Pintrest I found this DIY anti-deer spray.

My cousin has lots of problems with deer and she uses dryer sheets and is amazed how well they work.

Gotta admit, I didn't have much hope for this quilt when you started it. I didn't see the charm in your pointy headed ladies. But now that they are all together I love them. You're right, we need us all, pointy headed or not.

Congratulations on getting the quilting done and having Big Bertha back where she belongs, doing what she's supposed to be doing. What a lovely gesture for a special little girl. I just got caught up on your last 2 weeks. We were swamped with work last week and have been searching and dealing with the heartache of our cat, Diva getting out on Saturday night. I hope you have a fantastic trip.

Beautiful! And a perfect gift for a lovely girl.

Glad to hear you beat the deer to the strawberries. Somewhere I heard that Oregon strawberries are the best. I wonder where that was?
