Windy and Wet

Looking for the February NewFO Linky Party?

The weather has been ghastly here today. Such a big change from yesterday when it was warm enough to be out without a coat. While I was filling the bird feeders yesterday, I was very surprised to see these little wild iris blooming in one of our whisky barrels.

I have no idea where these came from. They are tiny...no more than 4-5 inches tall. I didn't plant them, but last year they came up for the first time. One of my friends suggested that the bulbs might have been moved there by some rodent. I like to think that the squirrels left them behind as a consolation for eating all of my tulip bulbs. It's as good an explanation as any, I suppose.

Yesterday morning, I made a trip to the post office, and then went swimming. Such an argument I had with Other Me yesterday about going swimming. I missed going last Friday because, frankly, I was tired from a poor night of sleep. Other Me didn't have a chance, but that just meant she was overly bossy yesterday. "You have to go into town either way, so what is the big deal about going for a swim?" she reasoned. I really just wanted to lie on the couch and take an early nap, but eventually Other Me won out. She had me convinced that I'd be glad I went (her usual argument...she can be so unimaginative), and that I'd hate myself if I didn't. I only got a "C" for my exercise last week, and so I finally gave in. She was right. I was glad I went. One of these days, Other Me won't have to be so forceful, but she isn't there yet.

So after that I made a quick trip to the grocery store. I have so many newly-tried recipes to type into my database that I've barred myself from trying any more new ones until I type in the stack that is sitting on my desk. As you might imagine, this puts quite a crimp into my cooking style since trying new recipes is a passion of mine. This has been a good week for it since I find myself with a refrigerator full of leftovers and a freezer full of dinners I've prepared previously. Also, I came across a small prime rib roast that I found on the bargain meat counter quite some time ago. I'm roasting that up tonight, and we'll eat it as the conventional roast beast. But then tomorrow, I'll use the leftovers for my own version of Philly cheese steak sandwiches. I cut the leftover roast beef up into stir-fry sized strips, add strips of onions and bell pepper, sliced mushrooms and grated Cheddar cheese. Stir fry it until the vegetables are tender, then serve it up on a Hoagie roll. I saw my brother make it that way once when I was visiting him and his family.

He was a good cook. He was my only brother, and he passed away in 2003. I still miss him.

Anyway...when I got home yesterday, I cut out the sashings, cornerstones, and setting triangles for the Blogger's BOM quilt top.

Today, I got it mostly sewn together. It's very bright.

Believe me, I thought twice about that polka dot, but I'm happy with how it's looking. The quilt is so colorful and crazy, I figure, what's a little more color? I'm going to use that same green/blue batik from the sashings for the inner border, and then I'll add another border around the outside. While I was sewing it together, I was considering what to call such a multi-colored quilt. Phrases about rainbows and kaleidoscopes filled my head, but I finally settled on "Joseph's Quilt". You'll have to remember your Bible stories to understand the name. Google it if you must.

So that's about it from me for today. Tomorrow is another swimming day, and I should have this quilt top finished by tomorrow afternoon.

I always hate going but so glad when I do, but I didn't sign up again for this year, guess I will next fall. I figure it will get nice soon so I can be outside and get back in shape then, lol.

Those are pretty flowers. I like the thought of the squirrels planting them as an apology (or maybe a "thank you") for your tulips. Made me smile imaging that. Hopefully you and Other you will become more agreeable on your swimming. I'm sorry about your brother. That's a great photo; he sure looks like he was a fun person. The quilt is fun and bright! I think the dots are perfectly matched to some of the other fabrics. I'm partial to polkadots myself.

It's bright, but fun. I think the polka dots add so much to it. For what ever the reason the bulbs appeared, I find them delightful.

Josephs coat of many colors....yes it is. The dots still throw me but with the right borders it does work. I guess I'm not much of a polka dot person, LOL
We had a beautiful day here today...went to Disneyland for a mental health day. Love your flowers, they really make me smile.

Planted outside my front door in memoriam of the artist I worked for before I left So FL and moved to CA is a climbing rose with an amazing collection of colors called "Joseph's Coat" for the same reason you are naming this quilt. I love serendipity.

Those little irises are beautiful! I too like the idea that the squirrels 'planted' them for you.

Very bright indeed! I love that blue/green sashing - it's quite yummy. ;)

Oh, the wild irises are just so bright and pretty. It's nice to see signs of Spring - gives me hope it will get here eventually! The quilt has the same colors as the irises = bright & pretty, too.

Geurilla ( Squirrel ) Gardener?
Now I can't shake the image of a podgy squirrel, wearing a baseball cap, with a shovel, hurredly planting bulbs before you spot him lolol
Now you see I would never in a month of sundays choose that spot as a background but it proves what crap colour matching sense I have!
It looks perfect and offsets the blocks so well!
I think just Josephs Coat would have been fine, its smashing!

Beautiful flowers, what a kind, thoughtful squirrel he must be. I believe in karma, so I like your way of thinking!

I'm proud of Other Me - may I borrow her please? I ate my 2nd bowl of (buttered!) popcorn this week last night, after a looong (apparently, not long enough?) discussion with my own Other Me. She lost, ergo, we all lost, sad to say. It's raining here again (yes, it's the first rain in a week, but where I'm from, it NEVER rains, so we've seen more rain on this trip than we've seen in 5 years, all put together!), and it's not even warm. In TX, when it rains, you go outside and revel in it, and it's like taking a warm shower. Here (FL), it's cold & damp, and gloomy! What happened to sunshowers? The good news is that I got the propane tank filled & emplaced, so I can use the heat as much as I want! And believe you me, I want, I want! These ragged old bones do NOT like the cold and damp.

Doggy's sitting up on the back of the sofa, in her window, much like I imagine Smitty's doing...what a wonderful life they have! Lucky dawgs, both of 'em! (all 3, if'n you count Gracie, huh!)

I'm not much on polky-dots either, but somehow, yours have actually seemed to tone down the scrappiness of the blocks & tie them all together. How did you even come up with that? I love the blue/green batik & how it seems to offset the polky-dots, in color & texture. Good job on all that combining. If you ever have to get a job, you should think about using that talent somehow...like offering your services up at a quilt shop or personally, on the web, or something. You could get your creative fix with other peoples' money, how cool would that be?

OK, breakfast dishes await..as of yet, no dishwasher in this camper, unless you count the ones attached to my arms. Hugs to all!

Let me just add one more thing real quick....

If I didn't have my puppy's picture (when she was really a puppy) as my background, I'd totally steal those irises and use them. LOVE that color!! just sayin. In fact, if'n you don't mind, I might just steal it to use in a slide show screen saver, k??

"Joseph's Coat" is an excellent choice, although my first thought was something in a different vein:"Joker's Wild". The Iris are magnificent!!!! The color is so intense...awesome photo!!! I can tell the heart wound in your little piece about your brother. I am so sorry for your loss............hugs........

Wow!That quilt is poppin' when in doubt follow Freddy Moran's rule and add more colors it certainly works for her. I think yours is wonderful and would cheer anybody up on a dreary day. I'm having the same struggle with that damn exercise thing and I only have to go upstairs! I'm just a natural sloth that's my problem and I can't even pretend to be anything else. It's all too easy to talk myself out of climbing those stairs to the dreaded treadmill but it's so gooooood for me. sigh

Isn't it amazing how we seem to evolve in our fabrics and our sewing? I would never have been drawn to all of that color some years ago, but now I find it appealing and fun! LOL I've been laughing at everyone's take on the squirrel gardener....maybe your bird cam will catch him in the background. Hugs to you!

I love 'Joseph's Quilt', it is such a perfect bright and happy quilt. i love the polka dots. I've got some of those small iris in my garden. the squirrel who eats the bulbs round here didn't fancy eating them for some reason. Along with the snowdrops they fill the space and make a lovely show until the rest of the spring flowers appear.

It is very bright, but a welcome sight to these snow weary eyes. I'm anxiously looking for blooming snowdrops and my little iris will follow -- thanks for sharing yours!

Oh a quilt of many colors is a perfect match for the name or vice versa. I love bright happy quilts. And thankfully I didn't have to google it! I wish I would argue with the other me when it comes to diet and exercise but hubby says there's no arguing with me so I guess the other me says the same thing.

The irises are divine! They are my favourite flower and I had my bridesmaids dress in that colour. I think Joseph's Coat is a brilliant name for the quilt and makes perfect sense to me.
