Blocks and Birds

Looking for the February NewFO Linky Party?

Today I met two more of my goals for March, even if they were small goals. I made the block for my guild block of the month. This is the Rocky Road to Dublin block. The colors were chosen by the guild:

Since I was going to make two blocks of nearly the same colors, I did the cutting for both. When that one was finished, I made this month's block for the Block Lotto.

This month's block is the Star Chain:

As for the bird, I'll need to apologize to Edgar Allen Poe for this next story. While I was making my blocks:

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'

So, with those words running through my head, I went to investigate this strange noise. It turned out to be a Song Sparrow sitting on the Star Magnolia just outside the window. I believe he was quite taken with his reflection in the window, and this being mating season (I'm guessing), decided he'd try to score a mate. He was there for hours, tapping, and singing his little birdie guts out.

I could walk right up to the window, and he couldn't see me. I'm assuming the reflection on the outside of the window was bright enough to obscure his view of the inside. Silly bird. He clearly is unaware that there be cats in here. He would make a tasty meal for someone in our family who just happens to have a powerful appetite for poultry.

The day has flown by as usual, and it's getting to be time to make dinner. We're having some chicken pot pies that I pulled out of the freezer. I just need to add the crust. Tomorrow is a swimming day, and so I'll be making a run to the post office and the grocery store while I'm at it. When I get home, I'll be ready to start sewing the Blogger's BOM quilt together. I believe I've made my final fabric choices, with the exception of the outer border. I'll get the inside of the quilt sewn together before making up my mind on that.

Beautiful block, I really need to do more piecing. We have birds that sit on the rail and chatter at the cats, they love to tease the kitties. One year they did that and I found moki on the porch and a giant hole in the screen, lol.

Fun blocks both of them. You are moving along on this month's goals.

We had a cardinal nest just outside the office window last summer. The female would tap at the window trying to drive off her reflection. She'd be at it for hours!

Wow, you are making some of us look bad! Lol it's only the 3rd and you've already finished 3 things! I didn't get to start or finish anything in February, but I did start something new today, so at least I don't feel like a total loser. Lol We get cardinals that will attack their reflection in our office windows.

OMG! those blocks must have been swimming around in my brain today without knowing you were making them. The birds are really quilt interesting, we have sparrows that tap on my sewing room window until I move and then they fly away.

Love the colors in the two blocks. Birds-dumb or what, some of them ?~! I started a piece today that I'm not sure how far it will go or what it will become. I like to think of it as an organic project as opposed to being one who never plans anything !~!

Well, I had a finish today too - I finished the guild newsletter & sent it to the printer & the email edition out as well. :)

I looked at the 'hedgehog quilt' & the binding for it, but that's as far as I got on that. And I THOUGHT about working on my sister's quilt too. Not bad for 3 hours sleep.... Would you believe I stuck a whole chicken in the crockpot to make 'fall apart chicken' at 3 AM? Yep, I did. We've been doing a potluck for lunch on Mondays at Auntie's Ceramics & today we had baked potatoes. I brought freshly cooked chicken, shredded Colby Jack cheese & sour cream to top them with. Yum.

Nice job on the RR2D block! I think I have a mental block about those 1/4 square or hourglass blocks in that one. Don't know why, but they give me the shivers to have to do them! lol

Oh gosh, the blocks are lovely and do I see some green "buds" on the bush the bird is sitting on? Of course you're a long way away from me but I'm hoping it's a sign spring has sprung!

I felt sorry for the bird, I hope he finds someone other than himself before Smitty eats him :)

Great blocks and I love the fabrics you've chosen. Love the tale of the sparrow and I hope he finds a real mate and doesn't become a little snack for Smitty.

Great blocks. I really like your fabric choices. Poor sparrow. At least he's getting a lot of practice for the real thing.

Love the blocks. Your bird is as optimistic as one in my neighborhood. There was a red bird singing in trees without leaves and ice on the ground!
