It's here! It's the first NewFO Challenge of 2014! Time to show us what's new in the new year! If you're newby to this blog and you're wondering what the heck a NewFO is, just click on that image above to find out. As for you well-seasoned friends, you know what to do.
Everyone who links up today will have a chance to win. No finishes required...just link up with any new projects you started during the month of January, finished or not. Today we're playing for the first of the new quilt block lapel pins I found for this year's monthly parties. For January, we're playing for the Amish block:
So let's just get right to it. This must have been my new month because I have quite a few projects to show you. First off, I started my 2014 quilt for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge:
This year, I'm making another quilt by Barbara Welland Talbert, her Dream Machines pattern.
January's color was blue, and I made the first little blue sewing machine:
As the year progresses, I'll make a block each month, which means that my quilt will have 12 blocks rather than sixteen.
After that, I started on my "official" January NewFO...this "We're On A Roll" wallhanging. This is a pattern I've had hanging around my sewing room for quilt a while, and isn't that what the NewFO challenge is all about? Yes! It's about getting those projects off your to-do list and under the needle of your sewing machine. I finished the top for this, but it still needs quilting and binding.
Then a little later on in the month, I attended a workshop called "Transforming the Traditional". There, I started two projects. This first one didn't get very far, but I want to finish it eventually. In this first project that I'm going to call "Along the Quilt Trail" we took a traditional block and distorted it to make something else:
Also, this curved cutting and piecing technique to make free-form roses. My plan is to stack these vertically to make a wall-hanging. I'll add some curvy, wavy sashings and borders to sew it into a whole:
I probably won't wait too long on either of these because I want to do it while the technique is still fresh in my mind.
Finally, I started on my project for Sharon V's "Let's Book It" Challenge:
My project for January is this Outback Sunrise table runner. As I'm writing this post, I'm just beginning to work on the blocks:
So that's quite a bit for me this month. Rest assured that subsequent months will not be nearly as ambitious.
And you don't have to do anything to link up here except to start one new project during the month of January. No finishes required...ever! Here are my simple and friendly requests before you link up:
1. Please link-up with your newly started projects from January, finished or not. If you feel like it, show us the progress you've made on any other previously posted NewFO projects.
2. Please link back to this post from your blog. Also, please link to your blog post, not your blog. Links to entire blogs will be edited by the administrator. Links provided for the sole purpose of promoting other events or shopping experiences will be deleted without apology. That means this is not the place to link up to your Etsy shops or other giveaways and/or promotions you have going on your own blog. To be clear, it is okay to link to other events, but I want to see your NewFO's as a part of your post.
3. Don't have a blog? Upload an image to this FlickR group and link to that. If you have questions about how to do that or about how to link up, please email me. If you're having trouble posting your image, email it as an attachment, and I will be happy to post it for you. Please know that it takes a bit for your thumbnail to appear, so don't despair. It will appear eventually. You might need to "refresh".
4. Obviously, I need some way to contact you no matter how you link up. No email address and no other way to contact you equals no entry in the giveaway. Email me separately if you need to.
I'll leave this linky party open until one minute before midnight on Thursday, February 6, 2014. Winner of the Amish block lapel pin will be announced on Friday, February 7, 2014! We will ship anywhere in the Milky Way Galaxy, so everyone is welcome!
Remember to "refresh" if you don't see your image right away. Here we go:

Hello Barbara, so excited to be part of the NewFO linky party.....first of many, I hope.
Cath
I'm in! Your curvy piecing is pretty good! I've seen that pattern around and thought how complicated it looked.
You had a busy January. I love the sewing machine block, it's going to be such a fun quilt.
Wow Barbara, you have been very busy in January- that's allot of projects for one month-cool!
I did not start anything new this month-but am sticking with getting a quilt finished that I am hand quilting.
Just dropping by to say hi
Kathy
You accomplished a lot this month! Thanks for hosting the party - my first NewFO linky party!
My very first NewFO Linky! Thanks for hosting us. Love your projects - you've been very busy this month.
Where do I find the Dream Machines pattern? I would love to use to make a rug mug.
I just entered for the first time.:) At least I think I did. I don't have a blog and Mr. Linky didn't seem to like me much.
Thank you for being so generous and for keeping me motivated by posting such wonderful work.
And say hi to Smitty and Gracie.
Have to decided to focus my energy on the "finishes" this year . . . but allowing myself one newbie a month to keep the enthusiasm alive!!
I think a lot of us are starting new projects, fun to create inside with all this cold weather. Love how your projects are coming along.
Debbie
With a Masterclass project every month, I should always have a NewFO. :-)

I made a quilt for my great nephew Mason (#15 linked via Flickr group). It's a little bit improv & made with farm fabrics (he loves his grampa's cattle). Thanks.
What fun to start a new year with NewFO's!!! You were SO busy girlfriend! Love all the fun projects - especially the roses from your class. Amazing :*)
All linked up with only one NewFO this month!
Looking fwd to seeing your roses grow!
Thank you
Barbara!
Hi!!!! I am going to try to link up!!!! I have some new starts!!! Hope my post will be ok!!! If not let me know!!!
Nice bunch of NewFOs Barbara! I have some too - a couple that I couldn't post because they're surprises. ;^)
Now I'm off to check out what everyone else linked up!
All of your NewFOs are cute but my fav is the roses.
Hi Barbara...it is a first time linky up to your party. I'm always starting new projects but now sEw good at finishing. 2014 is the year to finish some UFO's.
Happy stitching, Pauline
I started the Michigan quilt and have completed the Upper Peninsula and a portion of the Lower Peninsula. It's going to be a present for my hubby, but there's no way I'm going to be done by his birthday (Feb 6).
As usual you have lots going on, I love seeing all of the new people joining in.
I'm in awe of all your goals. I'm happy to just have a couple. Then I'm always surprised!

Got my Post written last night and am all linked up today. I put certain projects down as 2014 NewFOS but I keep finding new ones to start along the Blogland way. I am resisting a few, thankfully! not enough hours in my day to do all I see!
Wanted to do this last night but didn't have time. Thanks for hosting this; I'm looking forward to starting something new every month -- woohoo!
One start and two finishes. Yay. Linked up.
I printed off the sewing machine quilt when you first showed it. Maybe I'll find time to make it one day. The color challenge is a good way to do it. Glad you learned lots at your class. I really like the flowers.
All your NewUfo look fabulous and thanks for the party!
Thanks for hosting!
I love looking at all your new FOs. I was not going to start new ones this year and instead just work on UFOs. Well that didn't last very long at all! I now have 3 new projects on my list and it's only Feb. 1. I just linked my Jan FO today. Thanks for hosting the party.
Linked up! Thanks again for hosting another year of NewFO's! You fabulous enabler!
So glad you are doing this again this month!!
I love how the 'roll' project has the toilet paper going under on some and over on some! The roses are fascinating, too -- they are turning out quite beautifully! Lots of fun new things in January! :)
I finally made it ! Got my post up this morning.
OOps, That was me signed in with the wrong account!
This is fun - as if I need an excuse to start new projects. And it's not like I have no UFOs to focus on. But I love to start things, especially quilts.
Love NewFO! It keeps me focused on finishing one from a previous links or forces me to do the one that is smacking me in the brain leaving dents from being ignored. I set a monthly reminder in my phone for one week before the end of the month, just incase I didn't start something. LOL!!!
I made it this month-I'm so excited to be part of the adventure. What a great good lot of entries too. Your blog is so successful, Barbara, I just love it.
I think I finally got a picture uploaded--I finished the top of my January NewFo (it was a long, dull month and an easy pattern-LOL). I am not normally an overachiever :o)
woo-hoo! I'm in!
Thanks for challenging us to keep starting new things. I love it! This may be the first challenge group that I even finish on time (just need to remember to link up!)
Whoo hoo! I made it in this month too. will miracles never cease!
Thanks for the motivation!!!
So glad to meet you and I can see that you are going to be a bad influence on me. lol If I ever run out of ideas of what to work on I'll be stopping by :) I'm really intrigued by the free form roses. What a perfect project for the City of Roses resident. Happy Quilting!
Thank you again, I love your projects.
Whew, I'm so glad I got a chance to get this in! Thanks for the encouragement to begin and begin and begin...
Oops I missed the link party again! I must get more organised with my blogging. I have been so busy making things I forget to blog!
I have just done a progress report for January if you would like to check it out you will find it here
http://crafting365days.blogspot.com.au/2014/02/january-goal-progress-report.html
Hopefully next time I will get in before the link expires!
Thanks for keeping me inspired.
