A Purple Cow: Now You've Seen One

Yesterday I devoted my sewing time to making blocks. I started by remaking the final block for the Hello Moon BOM. Heidi over at Red Letter Quilts got the genius idea to make a cow jumping over the moon for her final Hello Moon block, and she has graciously given permission for several of us to copy her design. And, honestly, isn't sharing part of the spirit of quilting? Where would any of us be if our grandmothers, great grandmothers, and great great grandmothers had been all stingy about their designs?

A couple of days ago I blogged about why my cow would be purple. You can read it right here. And here's what I came up with:

Thank you, Heidi. Good on you for sharing your idea so generously. I'm so much happier with this cow than I was with either of the fox blocks I made. I'm linking this post to:

Also, I made a block for the Block Lotto. This month's block is a double chevron. We were to use a white or white-on-white background, and then the chevron could be either brown, gray or purple. Here's my block:

Finally, I made two more blocks for the Yard Art quilt:

I believe I have half of the blocks for this quilt finished now. It's kind of a bugger cutting out the pieces for the palm tree. They still need top-stitching, and I'll do that this morning. And then....I'm literally going to pack it in, because it's time to start packing for the three-day workshop I'm attending in conjunction with the Stitches in Bloom quilt show this week. (You can read about the workshop right here.)

The weather is supposed to be relatively nice this week, and it's a good time for it because Stitches in Bloom is held at the Oregon Garden in Silverton, Oregon. Admission to the show includes admission to the garden itself. The show is always held in January, and it's always been too cold and nasty to visit the garden in years gone by. I'm hopeful I'll actually have some time to take a stroll while I'm there, weather cooperating. I'm staying at the Oregon Garden Resort for the workshop, which sadly, does not have a fitness center. With nice weather, I'll be able to get out for a walk and keep up with my goal of getting some exercise. Also, Silverton is a cute little town. The business district is an easy walk from the resort, and so I might take a stroll around town as well.

I'll be taking my laptop and my camera along, and so I'll be blogging about my comings and goings during the week. After initially feeling some angst about being away from home for several days and in a roomful of strangers, I feel ready to learn something new, and I'm looking forward to it. In addition to packing, I'm going to pull some fabrics to use for my workshop projects this morning. Hopefully, I'll have everything I need.

And with that, I'd better get going. Lots to do today to get ready.

Purple cows are the best!
I heard a story once that European city children think that cows are purple because of the purple cow on the wrapper of the Milka Chocolate!

My mother used to say the Purple Cow poem a lot when I was a kid. Thanks for the sweet memory!
Enjoy your trip!

I'm trying to remember a poem about a purple cow, but alas the memory seems to be on vacation this week! Have a great time at the show/retreat!

And we thought it was a one-eyed, one-horned, flying purple people eater.....giggle. Too cute!

That is the cutest purple cow I have seen lately! You did get a lot done today. I did not. When the cold front moved through, i went to bed with a massive head ache. Feeling better, now.

Oh the purple cow is perfect! Good on Heidi for sharing too!!

I have a transcription to do, so haven't done any sewing. I need to get to work on 2 quilts for guild challenges, one UFO to finish & one with a "song title" theme. Hopefully I'll get that work done early tomorrow so I can sew.

Have a GREAT time at your workshop & at the show!
